Heavily Armed Pennsylvania Teen Arrested on Charges of Aiding ISIS

Today federal agents arrested 19-year-old Jalil Ibn Ameer Aziz of Harrisburg, PA on charges of attempting to aid the Islamic State and spreading its recruitment propaganda across his 57 ISIS-themed Twitter accounts.

Heavily Armed Pennsylvania Teen Arrested on Charges of Aiding ISIS

According to a Department of Justice release and unsealed criminal complaint, Aziz’s support of the Islamic State crossed well over the line of digital proselytizing: “A prior physical search of Aziz’s residence also revealed a tactical-style backpack in his closet, which contained high-capacity weapons magazines, ammunition, a knife, and other survival items...five loaded M4-style high-capacity magazines, a modified kitchen knife, a thumb drive, medication and a balaclava.” It’s unclear whether Aziz had any concrete plan to use the gear, but his online collaboration looks incriminating enough on its own:

Aziz is alleged to have posted a hyperlink containing the names, addresses and other identifying information of 100 reported members of the U.S. military and calls for violence against them. Additionally, on at least three occasions, Aziz also allegedly used his Twitter accounts and other electronic communication services to assist persons seeking to travel to and fight for ISIL. In one instance, Aziz allegedly acted as an intermediary between a person in Turkey and several well-known members of ISIL. According to the allegations in the complaint, Aziz passed location information, including maps and a telephone number, between these ISIL supporters.

The full criminal complaint can be read here.

New York Pizza Shop Owner Pleads Guilty to Recruiting for ISIS

Earlier today, the 31 year-old owner of a pizza shop in Rochester—one of the very first Americans to ever be accused of recruiting for ISIS—pleaded guilty in federal court.

Elfgeeh ultimately got caught plotting to send two men to Syria, where they were set to join up with the terrorist organization. But as it so often turns out, one of the men was actually an informant with the FBI. Even so, while the feds first got wind of Elfgeeh in 2013, it wasn’t until May of 2014 (when he bought two handguns with the intent of killing two returning U.S. soldiers) that he was finally arrested by the Joint Terrorism Task Force.

As U.S. Attorney William Hochul Jr. told ABC News:

Elfgeeh wanted to be a source of support for violent jihad and serve as a facilitator for violent jihadists who wanted to travel overseas and fight. In Elfgeeh’s own postings and messages on social media and statements ... Elfgeeh stated that a person who helps or sponsors a fighter to engage in violent jihad obtains the same religious rewards from Allah (God) as the fighter himself.

As part of his plea agreement, Elfgeeh admitted to both:

  • Knowingly attempting to send new recruits to “a foreign terrorist organization, namely, The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL)”
  • And knowledge that ISIS was, in fact, a terrorist organization.

The deal also notes that, while running the pizza shop, Elfgeeh took advantage of Twitter, WhatsApp, and a whopping 23 different Facebook accounts in an effort to “seek donations and declare his support for violent jihad and allegiance to the Islamic State and its leaders.”

Under the agreement, Elfgeeh will be spending about 22-and-a-half years in prison, though he won’t be officially sentenced until March. You can read Elfgeeh’s full plea deal below:

Friend of San Bernardino Shooters Charged With Conspiring to Support Terrorism

Enrique Marquez, a friend of San Bernardino attacker Syed Farook, has been charged with multiple terrorism-related charges for his alleged role in supporting the mass shooting. According to officials, Marquez admitted to purchasing the assault rifles that Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik used in the attack that killed 14 people this month.

Marquez, 24, was charged with providing material support to terrorists, making false statements while purchasing a firearm, and immigration fraud, according to the criminal complaint filed against him. He was arrested by FBI agents today.

Marquez allegedly purchased the rifles used in Farook and Malik’s attack in 2011 and 2012. He has cooperated with investigators thus far, “supplying much of what federal authorities know about the couple,” the Times reports, and is the first person charged in connection with the shooting. Farook and Malik were both killed by police on the scene.

Officials have “no evidence that Mr. Marquez participated in the Dec. 2, 2015 attack or had advance knowledge of it,” U.S. Attorney Eileen M. Decker wrote in a statement, but is being charged for “his prior purchase of the firearms and ongoing failure to warn authorities about Farook’s intent to commit mass murder.”

Marquez told authorities that Farook had told him about a plan to commit an attack in 2012, the Post reports. The criminal complaint against him alleges that the pair began planning to commit terrorist acts in 2011, and that Marquez purchased explosives for the purposes of an attack the following year.

Among the most vivid excerpts from the complaint shows a bizarrely frank discussion Marquez had via Facebook about his alleged role in terrorist plots.

And a transcript of his 911 call shows Marquez telling the dispatcher, “The asshole used my gun in the shooting.

Marquez converted to Islam four years ago, and is married to the sister of Farook’s brother’s wife, the Post reports. The complaint against him calls that marriage “fraudulent,” and alleges that he was paid $200 per month for his role as husband.

The Two Mysteries of Martin Shkreli's Last Livestream

The Two Mysteries of Martin Shkreli's Last Livestream

Before he was hauled away by FBI agents for allegedly using various investors as pawns in what essentially amounted to a long Ponzi scheme, pharmaceutical dillweed Martin Shkreli did what he does frequently: sit in front of his computer and livestream on YouTube nonsensically. As people have gone back and reviewed his last hours of freedom, two puzzling mysteries have emerged from the otherwise banal footage.

http://gawker.com/martin-shkreli...

Did Shkreli flash the elusive Wu-Tang album?

After his arrest, many people wanted to know the fate of the one-of-a-kind Wu-Tang Clan album that Shkreli had reportedly purchased for $2 million. As we reported earlier this morning, the feds did not seize the album, a fact the FBI confirmed in the afternoon. It’s unclear if the feds could take possession of the album even if they wanted to, but this all brings up a much more fundamental question: Does Shkreli even have the record in the first place?

http://gawker.com/the-feds-didnt...

We do know that he bought the record, as a press release from auction firm Paddle8 indicates. But the album was being stored in a vault in a hotel in Monoco, and it’s plausible that it had not yet actually been transferred into his possession. At the very end of last night’s livestream, though, it certainly looks like Shkreli could be holding in his hands, a question first asked by BroBible in their post “Is This Martin Shrekli Flashing His $2 Million Wu-Tang Album Right Before He Gets Arrested?”

Given the lengths to which Shkreli will go to make a scene—for instance, purchasing a $2 million Wu-Tang Clan album—it’s not out of the question that he would have had some sort of prop on hand to make people think he’s showing off the album when he really wasn’t. Known photos of the record show a “silver-and-nickel box” with engraving covering its face, save for a bare patch in the shape of Wu-Tang’s famous curling “W” logo. What Shkreli shows is the opposite: a clean face with an engraved logo. That said, it’s quite possible that what Shkreli holds up to the camera could be the final, inmost case in series of cases like Russian nesting dolls containing the album.

Regardless, whatever he displays has his grubby fingerprints all over it, which at the very least, makes it less gleaming.

Did Shkreli get a call from a “special agent?”

More dramatically, 90 minutes into the livestream, Shkreli appears to get a phone call. When he picks it up we hear a voice say, “Yes hello, this is special agent—” before Shkreli cuts the call off. “Watch: Martin Shkreli Gets Call From ‘Special Agent’ During Live Stream,” writes Patch in a headline, above a story that openly undermines its own premise. It’s hard to imagine an actual FBI agent would have called up Martin Shkreli, using some robotic Moviefone voice, the night before his arrest. Still it would have been very funny if the FBI had done that, specifically to Martin Shkreli.

Panel Finds UN Failed to Respond to Numerous Reports that Peacekeepers Sexually Abused Children

A report released Thursday has found “gross institutional failure” on the part of the United Nations for failing to investigate claims that French peacekeepers sexually abused children in the Central African Republic—a failure that ultimately led to more cases of abuse.

The Associated Press reports:

The independent panel found that the accounts by children as young as 9 of trading oral sex and other acts in exchange for food in the middle of a war zone in early 2014 were “passed from desk to desk, inbox to inbox, across multiple U.N. offices, with no one willing to take responsibility.”

Among those said to have looked the other way were the U.N. children’s agency, UNICEF, as well as human rights staffers.

“The welfare of the victims and the accountability of the perpetrators appeared to be an afterthought, if considered at all,” reads the report.

The Guardian reports that the peacekeepers were from “a unit known as the Sangaris force, which was operating under authorisation of the security council but not under UN command.” It has now been over a year and a half since the first cases were reported, but no one has been arrested.

“I express my profound regret that these children were betrayed by the very people sent to protect them,” said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon in a statement. “Though the soldiers who committed the abuses were not under United Nations command, the Report shows that the United Nations, which uncovered the abuse, did not subsequently handle the case with speed, care or sensitivity required.”

Ban also noted that he had asked for the resignation of the UN’s Special Representative for the Central African Republic.

“The handling of sexual exploitation and abuse is particularly complicated when, as in this case, troops are not under United Nations command,” the statement continues. “This in no way diminishes the responsibility of the United Nations to speak out when other troops commit violations.”

De Blasio Announces Plan to Track Each and Every Homeless Person Living On New York's Streets

De Blasio Announces Plan to Track Each and Every Homeless Person Living On New York's Streets

On Thursday, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced “the most comprehensive street homeless outreach effort ever deployed in an American city.” The city estimates there are between three and four thousand people living on the street. The program will be called “HOME-STAT,” a reference to the NYPD’s COMPSTAT program.

The allusion is apropos. From the New York Times:

Mr. de Blasio, speaking to a civic group in Manhattan, said he would employ a strategy similar to the CompStat program that the Police Department uses to map and respond to crime, greatly expanding the number of police officers in an unit focused on the homeless. He said calls about problems with homeless people would be answered within an hour or less.

A real-time daily public dashboard will track the city’s response to reports of homeless individuals, and Mr. de Blasio said that every Manhattan block from Canal to 145th Street would be canvassed on a daily basis by city workers.

Later, the Times reports, the police commissioner made his own announcement:

In what appeared to be an unplanned announcement, Mr. de Blasio’s police commissioner, William J. Bratton, said after the speech that his department was examining legislation to modify city laws — “if we are able to frame it in a way that the courts don’t overrule” — so that police officers would have more leniency in ejecting homeless people from certain areas of the city.

That approach was at odds with Mr. de Blasio’s remarks, in which the mayor was careful to avoid the use of the word “arrest.” But the comments by Mr. Bratton emphasized the likely role that officers would play in putting the city’s plan into effect, including the possible arrest of some homeless people for minor crimes.

The mayor has been subject to criticism over his handling of the homelessness crisis: in addition to those living on the street, 57,998 people stayed in city shelters on Monday night, including 40,540 families with children.

“This is a problem that has built up over many years. It didn’t happen overnight,” the Human Resources Administration commissioner, Steve Banks, told the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday. “If certain things other mayors had put in place were in place in the past, we’d be in a different place.” The commissioner of Homeless Services stepped down the day before.

The new program is scheduled to be up and running in March. If all goes according to plan, every single person living on the street will be assigned a caseworker.

“We’ll have the most up-to-date, specific data on the street population we’ve ever had,” De Blasio said, according to the New York Observer. “And we’ll perform rigorous analyses of that data to determine what people need, what’s working, and what’s not—helping us take important steps to keep street homelessness down in the future.”

Some housing advocates are skeptical, however, like Jesus Morales, a member of organizing group Picture the Homeless. “This new program is just more of the same,” Morales, who has lived on the street for more than 15 years, told Gawker through a PTH spokesperson.“More case workers, more cops—that does nothing for me. Meanwhile, the cops are treating homeless people like dirt, every day. That’s the problem the mayor needs to fix.”

“Just last night, hours right before this big announcement, I got woken up by a cop, kicking me. In the leg, in the back of the knee. I asked, ‘Why are you kicking me?’ They said, ‘Because you have to go.’ Didn’t offer me help, didn’t offer me anything. Kicked me, hard, and told me to go.”

“This happens every day. To all of us. To me and my brothers. People walk by me all day, every day, with big bags full of holiday shopping. Cops don’t say anything to them. To me, the cops say, ‘Why do you have all these bags? These bags have got to go.’ And they seize them, throw them away.”

“They need to help the homeless with something real—a place, a home, not a shelter. Not the street. So much money they waste, on cops and shelters. Shelters are no good. I’ve been robbed, the bathrooms are disgusting, there’s filth in the showers. They cost a lot, and they don’t help you get out of your situation. There’s so much development happening, but it’s not for us. It’s not for poor people, putting in these neighborhoods. People are dying out here. Find us housing.”

Major Progressive PR Firm Shuts Down Amid Accusations of Sexual Assault Against Founder

Major Progressive PR Firm Shuts Down Amid Accusations of Sexual Assault Against Founder

FitzGibbon Media, a major public relations firm in Washington, D.C., that worked with a host of progressive personalities and organizations including Wikipedia, Julian Assange, the ACLU and Chelsea Manning, closed abruptly on Thursday. Several staff members alleged that Trevor FitzGibbon, the firm’s president, had committed sexual harassment and sexual assault against female staff.

The news that FitzGibbon was shuttering was first reported by the Huffington Post on Thursday evening; they cited a tweet from Sean Carlson, the firm’s senior digital director, who said the reason for the closure was because employees “would no longer follow the leadership of a serial sexual harasser.”

Jezebel reached three now-former employees, none of whom would comment for the record but who told Jezebel that the allegations against FitzGibbon included both sexual harassment and sexual assault. They said the sexual harassment had occurred against “at least half a dozen” people and that there were two instances of sexual assault that they knew about. An employee learned that a female applicant had been aggressively sexually propositioned by FitzGibbon during a job interview. The employee took their concerns about the situation to a supervisor, and a broad inquiry into FitzGibbon’s behavior brought to light the other incidents, they said.

On Thursday, several reporters received an anonymous statement from a Gmail account that appeared to represent the views of at least some of the departed FitzGibbon staffers:

The team that comprised FitzGibbon Media is incredibly sad and disappointed to confirm that allegations have been made against Trevor FitzGibbon, FitzGibbon Media founder and President, for sexual assault and harassment of multiple female staffers. Staffers reported over a half dozen incidents of sexual harassment and at least two involving sexual assault committed by Trevor FitzGibbon against his own employees.

“For decades, Trevor presented himself a champion of the progressive movement, claiming to support and respect women and feminist issues, from equal pay to reproductive rights, but his actions prove a hypocrisy so great that FitzGibbon Media closed its doors today, as we could no longer continue working under his leadership. We lost our jobs standing up for what’s right, to ensure a safe workplace for all — and while we may have been left without jobs, benefits and long-term healthcare, we have our integrity and each other.

We are devastated to see our beloved place of work closed at the hands of such a coward and hope to continue working on the social and political issues we love and care so deeply for in the future.

According to the people who spoke with Jezebel, the majority of the staff became aware of the allegations on Sunday evening, when they received an email from FitzGibbon himself informing them he was being put on leave and was “undergoing counseling.” Over the course of this week, members of the firm discussed whether they could stay open but sever Fitzgibbon himself from its operations. But became clear, the staffers told Jezebel, that there was legally no way for the company to continue to stay open without him at the helm.

One source added that FitzGibbon’s behavior was “in complete conflict with the values he espoused and the values everyone around him holds,” and made it impossible for business to continue as usual.

“He had a position of trust and he abused it,” another added.

Another person who works in public relations and who shared clients with FitzGibbon told Jezebel female staff members at one organization had received “creepy gchats and emails” from FitzGibbon on several occasions late at night, but were reluctant to confront him or tell anyone out of a perception that he was influential in D.C. progressive circles.

Fitzgibbon did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment, but issued a statement to HuffPo saying the allegations against him were a “distraction” to the mission of the firm and vowing to seek to “regain the trust that was lost.” The full statement reads:

It is with tremendous regret that we had to close FitzGibbon Media. Our team was at the helm of many of the most important policy debates of our time. We were the undisputed communications leader for the progressive movement. Although the company is closing, our talents and our mission remain unchanged.

The allegations against me are a distraction to the mission at hand. In order to do what is best for the company, I took a leave of absence. However, it is abundantly clear that an irreconcilable difference has arisen between the FitzGibbon team and me. We had no choice but to make the difficult decision to close FitzGibbon media.

I apologize to my team and our clients for the impact this closing will have on them. I will work to once again regain the trust that was lost.

FitzGibbon represented a who’s-who of liberal groups and publications, including the AFL-CIO, the Daily Kos, First Look Media, and UltraViolet, the anti-sexual assault and sexual violence group.

Is David Brooks Giving Up on Humility?

The Global Affairs class New York Times columnist David Brooks has taught at Yale three times in the past three years, “Humility,” will not be offered again next semester, Gawker has learned. In its first iteration, in Spring 2013, the reading list for “Humility” included some of Brooks’ own columns.

Instead, Brooks will teach a class on “Successful Global Leadership.” Here is the course description for that offering:

In an age of individualism and cosmopolitanism the ability to serve as an effective leader, and to lead a full life, depends on ability to end some freedoms and make crucial commitments: to spouse and family, to vocation, to faith or philosophy, and to community. Consideration of how to make commitments; how to decide on people and things to commit to; how to persevere within commitments; and the downsides of commitments. Preference given to upperclassmen and students associated with the Jackson Institute.

“Humility” was still scheduled in the official, online coursebook (accessible to all undergraduates) for next semester just a few days ago, we’re told. It’s not clear why the class was cancelled. Neither Brooks nor a Global Affairs departmental administrator have responded to a request for comment.

Is David Brooks Giving Up on Humility?

In response to an email from Gawker asking to confirm whether “Humility” has been cancelled and replaced with “Successful Global Leadership,” the dean of Yale College, Jonathan Holloway, wrote that he did not have the answers to our questions. (“Honestly, I have no idea.”) However:

Regardless of the reasons for Brooks’s decision, it might be helpful to know that Yale consistently offers around a thousand courses each semester. There is always a fair amount of movement as we approach each term: people cancel courses for personal reasons, people change courses due to requests from within programs or departments because of course cancellations elsewhere, etc.

Admission to “Humility” was highly competitive: undergraduates would attend the first day of class, we’re told, and Brooks would issue a writing prompt. A few days later, he would select about 20 students to participate in the class.

Needless to say, it would be a rewarding semester for everyone. Sometimes, a student would end up as an anecdote in one of his columns. Other times, a student would (more or less) write one of his columns. Always, Brooks learned as much from them as they did from him.

Anyway, we’ve asked Brooks if the class was cancelled, why it was cancelled, and whether humility is compatible with successful global leadership. We’ll update if he responds.

Virginia School District Cancels Classes After Teacher Gives Students Arabic Calligraphy Assignment

The entire Augusta County, Virginia, school district will be closed Friday, a week after one teacher touched off controversy by issuing an assignment to students, during a block study of world religions, asking them to copy an example of Arabic calligraphy—the Islamic statement of faith, or shahada.

The assignment was given by Cheryl LaPorte, a longtime teacher at Augusta County Schools, in a World Geography class at Riverheads High School. In the course of learning about different regions around the world, the Staunton News Leader reports, students also study the regions’ culture, which includes its predominant religions. Students had learned about Christianity and Judaism, and will learn about Hinduism and Buddhism. This was the section on Islam.

In English, the shahada states, “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.” While recitation of the shahada is part of the conversion process to Islam, students were not asked to recite it, but simply to copy it. (Calligraphy is a major part of Islamic art and culture.) From the News Leader:

Initial reaction from Christian parents called for such extreme actions as having LaPorte fired for “violating children’s religious beliefs.” However, both the Virginia Department of Education and Superintendent Eric Bond have reviewed the material and found it both in line with state standards, as well as not in violation of students’ rights.

Not that that mattered. From CBS News:

During a forum Tuesday night at the Good News Ministries church in Greenville, parents discussed the lesson and some expressed outrage over what they called indoctrination.

Kimberly Herndon, an Augusta County parent who organized the event, said she didn’t want a false doctrine spoken in schools.

“She gave up the Lord’s time,” Herndon said of LaPorte. “She gave it up and gave it to Mohammed.”

“That’s why we need to join together,” Herndon told the News Leader. “If my truth can not be spoken in schools, I don’t want false doctrine spoken in schools. That’s what keeps it even across the board.”

Naturally, the story has whipped the conservative media into a froth. On the sheriff’s recommendation, the school system decided to cancel Friday’s classes after coming under a deluge of calls and emails from outside the immediate community. There’s been no specific threat to students.

In the future, NBC29 reports, the school says it will use a non-religious Arabic phrase for the assignment. Meanwhile, according to the New York Times, hate crimes against Muslims have tripled in the past month.

Report: Bernie Sanders Campaign Improperly Accessed Confidential Clinton Voter Data

The Democratic National Committee has accused Bernie Sanders’ campaign of illicitly accessing confidential voter information acquired by the Clinton campaign, The Washington Post reported late Thursday night. Sanders’ campaign manager, for his part, hasn’t denied the allegations outright—but he is chalking the whole thing up to a computer glitch.

In response, the DNC has cut off Sanders’ campaign from accessing its master list of Democratic voters, which it maintains while allowing other campaigns to add their own, self-gathered (and firewall-protected) data to the list. The protections in place are supposed to keep other campaigns from using rivals’ information. But apparently, while a software patch was being installed on Wednesday, a “window into proprietary information from other campaigns” was accidentally opened.

From The Washington Post:

Jeff Weaver, the Vermont senator’s campaign manager, acknowledged that a low-level staffer had viewed the information but blamed a software vendor hired by the DNC for a glitch that allowed access. Weaver said one Sanders staffer was fired over the incident.

... Weaver said the Sanders campaign never downloaded or printed any of the data, meaning it is no longer in possession of any proprietary information.

Now, the DNC is refusing to allow Sanders’ campaign access back into its data stores until it provides evidence that all of Clinton’s data has been destroyed. Meaning that, at least for now, Sander’s organizers are going to have perform their efforts relatively blindly, which could be a major setback for the already lagging senator.

Thus far, according to the Post, Hillary Clinton’s camp has declined to comment on the issue. And while the whole situation seems to be an unfortunate accident—if not a slight overreaction on the DNC’s part—it’s about damn time something interesting (and non-email related) happened with a democrat.

Now the FBI Is Searching For the Infamous "Affluenza" Teen and His Mom

Ethan Couch—the infamous “affluenza” teen who killed four people while driving drunk—has disappeared, and so far not even the FBI can find him.

Couch, who was two years into the 10 years of probation he received for the crash, became a person of interest earlier this month when a teenage witness posted a video of him playing beer pong—a clear probation violation.

http://gawker.com/report-ya-boy-...

After that, Couch seemed to vanish. Authorities began looking for him after he missed a probation meeting right around the time the video came out, only to learn he and his mother, Tonya Couch, had disappeared.

On Tuesday, a Dallas judge issued an arrest warrant for Ethan, though it’s unclear how they’re going to serve it: No one has any idea where Ethan and his mom are.

http://gawker.com/the-infamous-a...

“They had a good head start,” Tarrant County Sheriff Dee Anderson told CNN this week. “My gut feeling says they’ve gone a long way, they have the money, they have the ability to disappear and I’m fearing that they may even be out of the country.”

Now, the FBI and the US Marshals service are stepping in to help the search. Anderson says finding the wealthy baby fugitive will remain a top priority.

“You can run, but you’re always going to be looking over your shoulder,” Anderson said. “We’re not going to give up. We’re going to come after you. We’re going to find you, wherever you are.”

Trump On Concerns His New Fan Putin Kills Journalists: "At Least He's a Leader"

$

In a news conference yesterday, Russian President Vladimir Putin called Donald Trump “a bright and talented person” and “the absolute leader of the presidential race.” Trump loved this, obviously. Today on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, he declared, “When people call you brilliant it’s always good. Especially when the person heads up Russia.” Trump then proceeded to ham-handedly defend his new buddy Putin against accusations that he kills journalists.

When host Joe Scarborough pointed out to Trump that Putin “kills journalists and political opponents” and “invades countries,” Trump countered this way: “He’s running this country, and at least he’s a leader. You know, unlike what we have in this country.”

Trump continued, “I think our country does plenty of killing also, Joe. There’s a lot of stupidity going on right now, Joe. A lot of killing and a lot of stupidity. And uh, that’s the way it is...”

At the end of the discussion, Scarborough gave Trump one last chance to say something not insane. “You obviously condemn Vladimir Putin killing journalists and political opponents, right?”

“Oh sure,” Trump responded, as if someone were asking him whether or not he likes baseball. “Absolutely.”

Remember when people said that Trump criticizing John McCain would be the end of his campaign? That was months ago.

Don't Settle For Speeches: Fix the Racial Wealth Gap

Political arguments over the impact of racism in America can often devolve into a stalemate of feelings. Here is one very concrete way to measure what racism has done—and is doing—to our country.

No honest person (not even a Republican) can doubt that the legacy of slavery and the subsequent awful periods of racial atrocity contribute to the racial inequality that exists today. But witness the way that conversations on this issue play out in the political arena: attempting to trace current inequality back through history leads to defensiveness among whites, insistence that they are not racist, and denial of the past affecting the present. The entire conversation tends to get bogged down before much progress can be made. If only there was a way to put this stuff into a neat little chart with numbers on it....

Don't Settle For Speeches: Fix the Racial Wealth Gap

Here, from the Economic Policy Institute, is something very easy to understand. Black Americans suffer from significantly higher levels of unemployment even when they have the same level of education as white people. It takes some impressive acrobatics of rhetoric to exclude past and present racism from the reasons behind a situation like this, when black people suffer nearly double (or more than double) the unemployment as white people do at all educational levels.

This is but one aspect of the racial wealth gap in America. The benefit of talking about the racial wealth gap is that you can put numbers on it, which allows for far less rhetorical squirming. Anyone, whether ignorant or just dishonest, can baldly deny racism’s affect on the level of personal experience, but that becomes much harder when the numbers are placed on the table. Whites may comfortably absolve themselves of responsibility for social ills by telling themselves that they, personally, are not racist. But none of us can absolve ourselves from this fact: one hundred and fifty years after the end of slavery, white households in America have a median wealth 13 times higher than black households.

Thirteen times higher. Is there a reasonable moral explanation for that? No, there is not. If you kidnap one group of people and systematically extort free labor from them for hundreds of years and then systematically disenfranchise and oppress them after that without any real attempt to pay them back for all that stolen labor, this is what you get. The racial wealth gap is a disgrace. Further, the racial wealth gap is the single most quantifiable facet of racial inequality in America. And for that reason, closing the racial wealth gap is also the easiest and most direct way for the government to attack the effects of racism in this country.

http://gawker.com/what-reparatio...

We have spent our entire history as a racist nation. Generations of leaders and activists have worked to change this, and generations after ours will continue to do that work, because racism is a problem that will take a very long time to be fixed, even with our best efforts. But we do not have to wait a very long time to address the racial wealth gap—the actual thing that drives a great deal of the inequality that results from racism. We can attack the racial wealth gap right now. Black people are the poorest group in America. Everything that we do to push wealth down the economic chain, to put more wealth in the hands of the poor and the working class, will help to close the racial wealth gap. That is something that can be accomplished through standard levers of government, like tax policy. It does not require another fifty years of arguing about who should be guilty. It is a number on a page, and it can be corrected in a meaningful way, beginning now. The more we close the racial wealth gap, the more every other social problem that flows from poverty will be mitigated.

Ending the racial wealth gap is not the same thing as ending racism. It does, however, have the advantage of being much more imminently achievable. Politicians have been giving sanctimonious speeches about equality forever. Fuck that. Make them put a dollar in your pocket. Let’s discuss the love in our hearts after we have more equality our bank accounts.

Donald Trump's Putin Admiration Is Completely Within the Political Mainstream

Donald Trump’s most important purely political skill (that is, one not directly related to his abilities as an entertainer and performer) is his ability to intuit what the great angry mass of movement conservatives wish their gutless leaders would say, and then say it. Other Republicans dogwhistle. Trump dispenses with coded language and simply says: We should deport all the illegals. We should ban all Muslim immigration. And now, on Vladimir Putin: “He’s running his country and at least he’s a leader, unlike what we have in this country.”

http://gawker.com/trump-on-conce...

Oddly, some in the political press (starting with the person to whom Donald Trump said that, Joe Scarborough) have interpreted this as some sort of weird, out-of-left-field “gaffe.” Surely everyone, especially in the GOP, agrees that Putin is bad, because he is a tyrant, and (even worse) he so frequently opposes American interests, right?

Apologies for the actually, but—actually: Admiration for Putin runs deep in the conservative grassroots, and has for much of Obama’s presidency. This is not a fresh observation! Here’s a sampling of pro-Putin comments one Washington Post writer got, after Matt Drudge linked to his story. “The best leader I have seen in my life time. A man’s man who makes his own decisions and loves his country and its citizens.” Here’s a Free Republic thread: “Why fight Putin? At least he’s standing up to the Islamic crazies, the global-warming nuts, and the depraved promoters of the homosexual agenda. Unlike the craven and sicko leaders here in the West, who embrace their own cultural suicide.”

These are, broadly, Trump’s “people.” They love Putin as a sort of anti-Obama, and for that crowd, a Putin “endorsement,” however glib, likely means more than one from any actual elected Republican. This direct and explicit Putin worship has generally been limited to what we misleadingly call the “fringe” (Pat Buchanan is a longtime fan) but the sentiment has bubbled up into the mainstream discourse before.

Matt Drudge, weirdly, in 2013: “Putin is the leader of the free world.”

Not mainstream enough for you? Here was Rudy Giuliani just last year: “But he makes a decision, and he executes it, quickly. Then everybody reacts. That’s what you call a leader.”

That’s practically the exact same sentiment that Trump has been castigated for expressing. At least he’s tough! At least he leads!

That slightly veiled admiration for authoritarianism—if only weakling Obama, always seeking consensus, just made decisions and acted instead—isn’t even just limited to conservatives.

Pop quiz. Who said this?

“It’s almost as if Putin is brilliant, really. I mean, he’s sort of outfoxing Obama all the time. He’s very clear. And the reason that he wins in a way is that he’s the only one who knows what he thinks. He’s utterly clear. He’s clear, he wants to increase Russian power.”

That was Tina Brown, in March 2014, on Meet the Press. No one else on the panel expressed even a hint of outrage.

And, you know, say what you like about Tina Brown, but at least she’s a thought leader.

Poll: Everyone Hates Jeb

A new national survey from Public Policy Polling has some godawful news for anyone who happens to be Muslim and/or named Jeb Bush. Because in both cases, Republican voters want pretty much nothing to do with you.

Of all the candidates, Donald Trump comes out as the clear frontrunner, with 34 percent of voters picking him over any other candidate. The runner-up is Ted Cruz at 18 percent, while Jim Gilmore is bringing up the rear at a solid zero.

Poll: Everyone Hates Jeb

On Jeb

  • If given the choice between Jeb Bush and Donald Trump, 58 percent of voters choose Trump, with another 9 percent being undecided.
  • Almost 50 percent of voters have an “unfavorable” opinion of Jeb. Another 18 percent can’t quite decide.
  • Yeesh:

Poll: Everyone Hates Jeb

On Muslims

  • 54 percent of Republican voters support banning Muslims from entering the United States altogether; 21 percent remain unsure. Only 25 percent of Republicans outright oppose banning all Muslims.
  • Regarding Donald Trump’s widely disproved New Jersey 9/11 tailgate, 36 percent still believe that “thousands of Arabs in New Jersey cheered when the World Trade Center collapsed on 9/11.” Another 29 percent think it’s possible but aren’t sure.
  • 54 percent of Republican voters would be open to the idea of shutting down Mosques in the US, with 28 percent of those being in full support of the idea.
  • Only 37 percent oppose creating a national Muslim database.
  • And yet, 49 percent of respondents claim to oppose the Japanese internment during World War II.

On Aladdin

  • 30 percent of respondents said that yes, they would support bombing Agrabah, while 57 percent where unclear.
  • Because Agrabah is a fictional kingdom in a Disney movie, put another way, 87 percent of respondents were open to bombing any vaguely Arabic-sounding nation, regardless of whether they had any idea at all of what it actually was.

You can see the full survey results over at Public Policy Polling here.

This seemingly-basic remote might not look like much at first blush, but it can actually control eight of your favorite home theater devices, and even turn your smartphone into a universal remote as well.

You’re probably used to seeing Logitech Harmony remotes with screens built-in, but it turns out that you already carry a much better screen in your pocket. So in addition to controlling your TV, cable box, game console, stereo, and more from the remote itself, the Logitech Harmony Smart Control can now do the same from your iPhone or Android from anywhere in the house. That’s especially handy when your favorite show is about to start and you can’t find the remote anywhere. Today’s $70 deal is the best we’ve ever seen, but I’d expect it to sell out quickly. We’ve seen several deals lately on Philips’ life-changing wake-up lights, but if you’re not among the 20,000+ Gawker media readers who have already pulled the trigger, the entry level model just dropped to its lowest price ever.

http://gizmodo.com/a-light-up-ala...

Unlike an unsympathetic traditional alarm clock, the Philips Wake-Up Light eases you awake with a gradually-brightening light that simulates a natural sunrise, which is how humans are designed to wake up anyway. And of course, it will still nudge you awake with a gentle beep when it’s really time to get out of bed. It also doubles as a very warm and pleasant reading light as you’re getting ready to go to sleep. I’ve owned this thing for nearly a year, and I can definitely tell the difference when I sleep away from home and have to rely on my iPhone alarm. [Philips HF3500/60 Wake-Up Light, $48. Let’s be honest here, thin fabric koozies are mostly useful for decoration; they don’t really keep a can cold for very long. This imposing metal Thermos contraption though? It’s the real deal.

Thermos’s stainless steel can insulator uses vacuum insulation and thick walls to actually provide a barrier between your beverage and the outside world. They go so far as to claim that it will keep a can cold for up to 3 hours, and even if that’s a little bit of marketing hyperbole, what could possibly be in that can that takes more than an hour to drink?

Over 1,200 Amazon reviewers have given the Thermos a 4.7 star review average, and you can get one (or more!) for just $10 right now, an all-time low. This would make a great stocking stuffer for the holidays, so check out before they sell out. [Thermos Stainless Steel Beverage Can Insulator for 12 Ounce Can, $10]
