Pharmaceutical Company Co-Founded by Martin Shkreli Announces Layoffs

Turing Pharmaceuticals, from which co-founder Martin Shkreli resigned a day after being indicted on fraud charges unrelated to the price-gouging that made him famous, announced Tuesday that it will “streamline its operations” through a “reduction of workforce.” Merry Christmas!

Interim CEO Ron Tilles would not say how many people were getting laid off or when. The cutbacks, he told the New York Daily News, will “put us in the best position to continue executing on our long-term plan.”

“Though this has been a period of leadership transition for Turing,” Tilles said, “I am confident that the fundamental business model remains strong.” Ho ho ho!

Worker Pulled Alive from Shenzhen Landslide Debris after 67 Hours

On Wednesday, the Xinhua News Agency reports, a young migrant worker who’d been trapped for days under mud and debris in Shenzhen has been rescued. A landslide swept through one of the city’s industrial areas on Sunday.

http://gawker.com/at-least-91-st...

According to the New York Times, the young man, Tian Zeming, spent 67 hours trapped inside a building after a door panel crushed his foot. Chinese news agencies followed the rescue closely.

More than 5,000 rescue workers have been deployed to the industrial zone, the Times reports. Seventy-six people are still missing, and only four bodies have been found.

Looks Like Aaron Hernandez Got Himself A Bloods Tattoo

Aaron Hernandez appeared in court yesterday for a hearing ahead of his next murder trial, and wore a t-shirt that for the first time fully revealed a tattoo he got done earlier this year.

Looking back at wire photos of Hernandez’s court appearances, he appears to have gotten the ink done between his April conviction for the murder of Odin Lloyd, and his May arraignment on murder charges for the killings of Daniel Abreu and Safiro Furtado in a 2012 drive-by. But the neck tattoo was always partially covered by a suit, until now.

Enhance!

Looks Like Aaron Hernandez Got Himself A Bloods Tattoo

The prison tattoo reads “lifetime loyalty” over a five-pointed star, and I don’t want to sound like an old retired police sergeant giving your middle school class a lecture on avoiding gangs and drugs, but the five-pointed star is one of the most commonly cited symbols of the Bloods gang.

Hernandez’s trial for the 2012 double murders is set to begin early next year, perhaps—though it’s unlikely—as early as Jan. 19. Hernandez is already serving life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Ben Carson's Not Firing Anyone But He's Also Not Not Going to Fire Anyone

Soft-spoken attempted murderer Ben Carson this week announced a mysterious campaign shakeup that definitely won’t involve layoffs, unless it does.

Carson announced Wednesday that his flailing campaign would soon see some sort of shakeup, which he strongly implied would involve staffing changes.

(To wit, he told CNN he was “refining some operational practices and streamlining some staff assignments to more aptly match the tasks ahead.” Those “personnel changes,” he told the AP, could affect anyone: “Everything. Everything is on the table, Every single thing is on the table. I’m looking carefully.”)

http://theslot.jezebel.com/what-major-sha...

But when Ben Carson said of personnel changes, “everything is on the table,” he meant everything but personnel changes, he confusingly clarified hours later.

“The Washington Post, quite frankly, had their story already written before they talked to me,” Carson told Don Lemon Wednesday night. “And they were convinced that I was gonna fire everybody and we were going to just go in a completely different direction, and that’s absolutely not true.”

Ok, sure. So Ben Carson isn’t going to fire everyone. Except:

“The key word there is ‘may.’ We’re always going to be looking at it. We’re always going to be evaluating how people are performing” he concluded. “No one is ever 100% guaranteed that they’re always going to be there.”

So there you have it. He’s going to fire someone, except he’s not, but he’s also not not going to fire someone.

How Not to Beat Ted Cruz

How Not to Beat Ted Cruz

·The GOP establishment will probably learn to love Ted Cruz, a man every Republican in Washington currently hates, when and if they determine that they have no other options. (Marco Rubio isn’t just stagnant, but actually falling in recent national polls.) But they’ll fight him until they are absolutely sure they’re stuck with him. The opposition research has been coming at a furious pace. And so far, it’s a huge whiff.

Here’s the big “secret Ted Cruz tape” story from Politico’s Mike Allen this week. Cruz, speaking “behind closed doors” at an expensive Manhattan fundraiser this month, said that he would not prioritize opposition to gay marriage in his campaign:

During the question period, one of the donors told Cruz that gay marriage was one of the few issues on which the two disagreed. Then the donor asked: “So would you say it’s like a top-three priority for you — fighting gay marriage?”

“No,” Cruz replied. “I would say defending the Constitution is a top priority. And that cuts across the whole spectrum — whether it’s defending [the] First Amendment, defending religious liberty.”

Soothing the attendee without contradicting what he has said elsewhere, Cruz added: “People of New York may well resolve the marriage question differently than the people of Florida or Texas or Ohio. ... That’s why we have 50 states — to allow a diversity of views. And so that is a core commitment.”

This is slightly inconsistent with what Cruz has said publicly, to his own supporters and to national audiences. As Allen notes, Cruz has promised that opposition to same-sex marriage would be “front and center” in his campaign. But nothing in his answer in New York actually contradicts Cruz’s official positions, and “defending the Constitution” and “defending religious liberty” both pretty clearly signal his intention to allow states to ignore the Supreme Court ruling that made same-sex marriage the law of the land.

This is the best Allen, channeling his sources, can do at finding the “gotcha”: “The claim about Cruz by rival campaigns isn’t so much that he changes his message to different audiences, but that the prioritization of his agenda changes.”

That’s not a very damning claim! Maybe make the other claim, the one that actually sounds more like a bad thing, if you want to hurt the Cruz campaign.

(Also, sidenote: Don’t send your damning Republican oppo to Mike Allen of all people. Do you think likely GOP primary voters read Playbook? Send it to the Free Beacon or the Daily Caller!)

This attempted attack, much like the one Rubio launched on Cruz’s immigration record, demonstrates a complete misunderstanding of what activist conservatives see in Cruz. The fact that he’s a bamboozler is part of his appeal. His supporters just think he’s bamboozling the right people—that is, he’s using his slick-talking Ivy League debater skills to placate the elite, not the grassroots.

Rubio, as you may recall, attempted to paint Cruz as soft-on-immigration because Cruz, in the middle of the 2013 immigration reform fight, introduced an amendment that would kill a “path to citizenship” but allow a path to legal residency. Cruz did this for a reason that was pretty obvious at the time: to divide supporters of the reform bill and make it less likely that anything would pass. Rubio, hoping that rationale was too convoluted for a national audience, just said that it proved that Cruz once supported legalization of undocumented immigrants.

To a low-information voter, maybe that sounded convincing. More likely, it all sounded like an obscure fight over a dead bill that neither candidate (now) supports. But, as Dave Weigel noted in a very helpful piece on how this fight played among activist conservatives, for a high-information voter—whose information only comes from the conservative media—this was a fight that was covered in great detail at the time, and it’s a history that Rubio can’t rewrite: Rubio supported amnesty, and Ted Cruz pretended to support it in order to kill the bill. Maybe that’s slippery Washington politician behavior, but no grassroots conservative has a principled opposition to playing the game to further the conservative cause. Rush Limbaugh was raving about the brilliance of Cruz’s strategy at the time. And Cruz won: The bill died and Rubio himself abandoned it.

Is this really the best the mainstream GOP can do? You’re never going to beat Ted Cruz by convincing conservatives that he’s not one of them. He’s always going to be clearly much more “one of them” than the non-Huckabee alternatives. Your best hope is an electability argument, and that’s simply one that conservatives are very sick of hearing.

500 Days of Kristin, Day 334: Kristin Had the Elves

As she admitted to Yahoo! earlier this year, Thoroughly Modern Kristin Cavallari doesn’t have many holiday traditions. “We’re pretty boring. Ha,” she said. But the former Laguna Beach star does have at least one Kristmas ritual—she told Us Weekly about it three years ago.

In an interview with the tabloid at the December 2012 launch of her mid-priced shoe line Kristin Cavallari for Chinese Laundry, Kristin described a merry tradition from her childhood:

We always had the elves for seven days the week before Christmas. If you were bad, you’d get coal. If you were good, they’d leave a little something in your stocking, so I want to do that with [my son] Camden.

Hmm.

What?

Twenty Years of Quentin Tarantino Characters Saying "Nigger" in Twenty Minutes

Earlier this week, Rich Juzwiak published a deeply-researched history of director Quentin Tarantino’s love affair with the word “nigger,” a word he has always used liberally in his screenplays. Juzwiak unearthed and examined twenty years worth of Tarantino’s varied and contradictory defenses of his use of the word. He also produced this video, a supercut of every instance of a character in a Tarantino-written film (through 2012’s Django Unchained) saying it. It’s a very long supercut.

Requiem For a !

With a new year comes new beginnings, and so it will be for theoretical presidential candidate Jeb Bush, who is now just a mere Jeb, and no longer, ahem, Jeb!

Per Mother Jones, a shadowy Jeb-controlled company called BHAG LLC (trust me, you don’t want to know what that stands for) has let its trademark application for the phrase “Jeb!” lapse. Mother Jones reports that BHAG LLC never responded to a United States Patent and Trademark Office request for Jeb’s consent to let Jeb be Jeb!:

According to the original application, Bush wanted the name reserved for use on leather key chains, stadium cushions, stemware, stuffed toys, hair bands, and other cool stuff. In April, the USPTO asked BHAG to provide, within six months, written consent from Bush himself to use his name. Bush never responded. So the USPTO issued an abandonment notice regarding the trademark request.

In recent months the Bush campaign—which declined to comment to Mother Jones—had shifted away from “Jeb!” and towards “Jeb Can Fix It,” a slogan one figures they will also have to abandon once he, you know, doesn’t.

At Least 25 Killed in Fire at Saudi Hospital

In Saudi Arabia on Thursday, a fire tore through the maternity and neonatal intensive care units at the general hospital in Jizan, the New York Times reports. At least 25 people were killed and 107 people injured.

Jizan is a port city of 70,000 people, on the southwestern tip of the Saudi peninsula. From the Times:

A regional health official, Ahmed al-Sahli, denied any safety violations, but Eissa Amaish, the sister of one victim, told Al-Arabiya, “What happened in this hospital was a crime of murder. This hospital was not equipped at all to deal with a fire.”

It was the third large-scale — and possibly avoidable — deadly disaster to hit Saudi Arabia in the past four months. At least 107 people were killed when a crane toppled at Mecca’s Grand Mosque in mid-September. A few weeks later hundreds of pilgrims were crushed in a stampede during the annual hajj.

According to Al Jazeera, as many as 31 people were killed. An emergency doctor at a different area hospital told the network that most of those injured were patients.

One Dead in Shooting at North Carolina Mall [UPDATED]

According to WSOCTV (and Twitter), an active shooter was reported at Northlake Mall in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Thursday afternoon.

The Charlotte Observer reported that three people were being treated: one with a leg injury; one who had gone into labor; and one who had an asthma attack.

Update – 2:58 pm

WSOCTV reports that police officers and paramedics descended upon the mall just before 2pm on Thursday. According to WBTV, witnesses heard around seven shots being fired.

Update – 3:25 pm

Multiple outlets are reporting that the suspect at the mall was shot and killed by police.

From Fox News:

Jasmine, an employee at Aldo inside the mall, told Fox News there were about five or six gunshots. Aldo employees immediately closed the store gate and went to the back room, Jasmine said. Eventually, mall security came and told people to evacuate, she said.

Jasmine said the shots originated about 100 feet from the Aldo entrance. She said emergency crews had a stretcher near the scene of the shooting.

Update – 3:35 pm

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police confirmed to the Observer that at least one person was shot and killed at the Northlake Mall on Thursday. However:

It was not immediately clear whether an officer fired any shots.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said early information indicates an argument started inside the mall around 2 p.m. Thursday between two groups of people. Officers who were working off-duty at the mall arrived on the scene.

At least one person was shot during the altercation, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Medic.

No officers were hurt, according to CMPD.

A graphic photo emerged on social media of a young black man’s body—purportedly the shooter’s—lying on the ground, white t-shirt covered in blood, with a police officer standing over him. Police have not yet announced the shooter’s identity, but local Twitter users speculated that the suspect was area rapper Donkey Cartel.

Update – 4:21 pm

CMPD has not yet scheduled a press conference, but did release a statement on the shooting, confirming that one armed subject was shot and killed: “Preliminary information on scene indicates that an argument started inside the mall between two groups of subjects around 2 p.m., at which point officers who were working off-duty at the mall arrived on scene,” the statement read. “No officers were injured during this shooting. This was NOT an active shooter situation.”

The Biggest Unsolved Mysteries of 2015

The Biggest Unsolved Mysteries of 2015

There are eight days remaining in 2015, and it feels like the year has left us with more questions than answers, some more pressing than others. What gave rise to Donald Trump? Who, and where, is the elusive creator of Bitcoin? And what caused a bizarre bootleg SpongeBob film to almost completely disappear?

Below, find a collection of the year’s most compelling unsolved mysteries, from Avril Lavigne to Martin Shkreli.

The Watcher

In June, Derek and Maria Broaddus of Westfield, New Jersey filed a lawsuit alleging that they’d received a series of terrifying letters from a person who identified him or herself only as “the Watcher.” In the messages, the Watcher claimed that the Broaddus’s $1.3 million suburban home was “the subject of my family for decades,” and thanked the couple for “the young blood you have brought to me,” in apparent reference to their children. The family fled their home after three letters, and the suit accused the previous owners of failing to notify them of the Watcher’s frightening obsession.

http://gawker.com/neighbor-the-n...

Gawker traveled to Westfield, and learned from a neighbor that the letters may have come from Newark, not the Broaddus’s town. The neighbor also believed that police had done “nothing” and “didn’t seem concerned” about finding the culprit. Six months after the story made headlines, there’s a Watcher NBC series reportedly in the works, but we still don’t know the creepy stalker’s identity.

A Day With SpongeBob Squarepants: The Movie

What if I told you that somewhere out there, there’s an unauthorized film about SpongeBob SquarePants that no one has ever seen? Or maybe someone has seen it, but they’ve since gone into hiding forever? Or maybe the film isn’t real, but for some reason, someone out there wants you to believe that it is?

http://internet.gawker.com/the-internets-...

Ever since someone noticed a listing for A Day With SpongeBob SquarePants: The Movie on Amazon in July, a cadre of obsessive fans has worked to find a copy of the film, going so far as to sift through public records and make phone calls to unsuspecting film distributor. But despite a strange trail of evidence that’s taken the searchers across the internet, they’ve not found even a single clip or screenshot from A Day With SpongeBob SquarePants. Judging by recent activity on the website where the search for the film is chiefly conducted, they’re still reluctant to accept the increasingly likely-seeming answer: that maybe A Day With SpongeBob SquarePants never existed at all.

Who is Satoshi Nakamoto?

Earlier this month, Sam Biddle and I published the results of a deep investigation indicating that Craig Wright, an Australian researcher and CEO, was either involved in the creation of the digital currency Bitcoin or had spent years orchestrating an elaborate con to make it seem like he was. Working from many of the same documents, Wired published a similar story less than two hours before, and Wright’s home and office were raided by Australian federal police on the day the two pieces went up.

http://gizmodo.com/this-australia...

That was nearly three weeks ago, and in the time since, other reporters have uncovered bizarre inconsistencies in Wright’s digital paper trail that made the already murky story even more perplexing. Craig Wright himself disappeared right around the time of the raids, and has not raised his head in public since. Whoever he is, and whatever his connection to Bitcoin, it’s unlikely we’ll learn much more about Craig Wright until he comes back.

Did Avril Lavigne Die in 2003?

The year’s most esoteric conspiracy theory claims that, like Paul McCartney in 1966, the Canadian pop-punk singer Avril Lavigne died in 2003 and was replaced by a doppelganger.

http://blackbag.gawker.com/did-avril-lavi...

The evidence is convincing. Her nose is different, and, uh, her teeth are maybe different too, and there are some lyrics in her songs about suicide. Damn, it is very sad that she died.

But wait! True believers claim that New Avril—their clever nickname for the new Avril—would not leave her home to go grocery shopping after her Lyme disease diagnosis, as she was spotted doing in a store’s cheese section months after her illness was made public. Could it be that this was the old Avril, Lyme-free and ready for some cheddar? It’s a shocking idea, but perhaps Avril Lavigne never died at all. Mystery solved?

Is Donald Trump Secretly Helping Hillary?

The political ascendance of the sputtering hate machine called Trump shocked just about everyone in 2015, and Americans who aren’t interested in power suits and state-sponsored religious discrimination have spent the last several months flailing desperately to explain away his rise.

http://blackbag.gawker.com/is-donald-trum...

The most tantalizing and farfetched theory goes something like this: Donald Trump is bad for the mainstream Republican party, Donald Trump could take a significant chunk of votes from the Republican candidate if he decided to run as an Independent, and Donald Trump has a longstanding, documented relationship with the Clinton family. In August, the Washington Post reported that Bill Clinton actively encouraged Trump to get more involved in GOP politics this year. Could it be that his entire campaign is a ruse designed to ensure Hillary’s victory? As the conservative commentator Allen Ginzberg asked in July: “If Trump had an agreement with Hillary to ensure her win by embarrassing R’s & then running as an indie, what would he be doing differently?”

Sadly, a few scattered bits of strangeness do not a shadowy conspiracy make, and even if the unlikely Trump theory were true, it wouldn’t change the most important takeaway from his surprise run: that plenty of Americans are either evil enough or stupid enough to actually support the guy.

Where Is Once Upon a Time in Shaolin?

In early December, it seemed like the public profile of Martin Shkreli, the price-gouging pharmaceutical CEO, was on the wane. Then, Businessweek dropped a bombshell: Shkreli was the purchaser of the sole copy Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, a Wu-Tang Clan album that the group conceived and marketed as a piece of fine art.

http://gawker.com/the-feds-didnt...

Weeks later, the FBI arrested Shkreli at his midtown Manhattan apartment on charges of fraud, and the indictment against him indicated that the feds might attempt to seize his assets if they were connected with his alleged crimes in any way. It was natural to wonder: if the world’s most coveted rap album was purchased with dirty money, might the authorities lock it up? Gawker broke the story that Shaolin had not been seized, but we weren’t able to say for sure where the album actually was. Is it still locked in a vault in Monaco, where the Wu kept safe before the sale? Or, as one of Shkreli’s most recent livestreams seems to indicate, is it sitting in a drawer in his room? Most importantly, what the hell does the thing sound like?

Kylo Ren Is Everything That Anakin Skywalker Should Have Been

Kylo Ren Is Everything That Anakin Skywalker Should Have Been

Kylo Ren had a huge legacy to live up to in the new Star Wars, because Darth Vader is one of cinema’s all-time great villains. But Vader’s legacy is also a huge part of what makes Kylo Ren so fascinating—because he’s everything that Anakin Skywalker should have been in the prequels.

A warning: there will of course be major spoilers for the plot of Star Wars: The Force Awakens below. If you’ve not seen the movie, turn back now.

The Star Wars movies have always featured villains who are cold, calculating and in control of their emotions. Vader, the Emperor, Dooku, Maul—the Sith always acted with a chilling precision. But Kylo Ren is anything but precise. He’s brash, raw, sullen, and just bursting with emotion. This is something we’ve seen before in the Expanded Universe of books and comics, but never in the movies.

Kylo Ren Is Everything That Anakin Skywalker Should Have Been

Kylo Ren howls and loses his mind, whenever anything goes wrong. When he discovers that the First Order failed to capture BB-8 on Jakku, he ignites his lightsaber and eviscerates a nearby computer console. When Rey escapes her confines on Starkiller base, he destroys an entire room in a fit of rage (almost comically so, as two nearby Stormtroopers decide to patrol in the other direction when they see smoke coming out of the cell—and yes, you’ve probably seen that Twitter account everyone’s chuckling at, too). Image via Beck-Solo

Kylo Ren harbors a bitter resentment for the expectations thrust upon him in his former life as Ben Solo, Jedi-in-training and a son of legends. Even his lightsaber itself is unstable and angry, flickering with sparks and heat—just like its owner.

Kylo Ren Is Everything That Anakin Skywalker Should Have Been

When you think about the angriest another Star Wars villain has been in the other films, the closest I can think of is Vader choking Admiral Ozzel for bringing the Empire’s fleet out of hyperspace too early in Empire Strikes Back. Even then, Vader’s rage is contained and suppressed—he calmly strangles the life out of Ozzel while telling Piett that he’s just gotten a promotion. This isnothing like Kylo’s roiling internal turmoil, which makes him unpredictable and scary every time he’s on screen. Kylo’s internal conflict is easy to see on the surface, and this makes him one of Star Wars’ most emotional, and hence most resonant, villains.

But that’s what the dark side is meant to be, right? Anger. Hate. Suffering—and above all those, passion. That’s not passion in terms of romance (although it can be), but the strength, the amplification, of your emotions. In George Lucas’ original conception, the Jedi were meant to be the warrior monks, skilled and precise and in control of their feelings. They harness power from that control. The Sith are the ones who give into their passion and seek power from jumping into that swirling sea of emotion. They’re angry and sullen and screaming at the world, at the legacies handed to them, because that’s what empowers them.

It almost sounds like a certain Skywalker, doesn’t it?

Kylo Ren Is Everything That Anakin Skywalker Should Have Been

Because really, when you think about it, on paper the young Anakin of Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith has a lot in common with the angst of his future grandson. Young Anakin is torn between the dark and light, compromised by his feelings for other people—feelings that send him on a path to the Dark Side. A man who’s angry at his lot in life, at the people around him, with a sense of betrayal and abandonment that eventually solidifies into a decision that he can never take back.

But “on paper” and “on film” are two different things, and the Anakin we see in the prequels is infamously whiny and pathetic, rather than the tumultuous sea of emotions that he was meant to be. Due to the fatal mix of a less than stellar performance from Hayden Christensen, and George Lucas’ sterile approach as a writer and director, mean the moments of raw emotion that are meant to punctuate Anakin’s fall, and resonate with the audience, never quite hit right. Anakin’s emotional journey in the prequels simply doesn’t work, because there’s so little real, believable emotion there.

When you think about those big moments—Shmi Skywalker’s death, Anakin’s confession to Padmé about slaughtering Tusken Raiders, the death of Mace Windu, confronting Obi-Wan on Mustafar—none of them really hit home. A flat performance here, a clunky line there, it all makes Anakin’s arc fall completely flat. He’s clearly supposed to be a passionate, tempestuous young man whose emotions are too intense for his Jedi discipline to control.

In Revenge of the Sith, we ought to be seeing the darkest moments in his life, but Anakin is moaning that he wasn’t made a Jedi master, or sent to hunt down Grievous. The closest we ever get to seeing him feel any emotional conflict is the moment when he breaks down in the Jedi Temple, alone and separated from Padmé—arguably the most effective scene in the movie, but one that can do nothing to compensate for the dearth of real emotion elsewhere.

Kylo Ren Is Everything That Anakin Skywalker Should Have Been

We never feel Anakin’s conflict, or his resentment towards the Jedi’s static ways. We barely even see it. His fall to the Dark Side becomes a bullet point, something that we know has to happen because he becomes Darth Vader in the original trilogy. It’s left to ancillary material like the Clone Wars animated series to fill int he gaps. And the Clone Wars cartoon does a remarkable job with Anakin, to the point that it makes his slow descent into rage and sadism actually stomach-turning at times.

Compare the two young men’s crucial “no going back” moments: Kylo’s murder of his father Han, and Anakin’s march on the Jedi Temple. For Kylo Ren, it’s a painful, almost pitiful moment, as he delivers a grand and heartbreaking speech to his dad about being torn apart by indecision and the pull between light and dark—only to twist things around at the last moment and use his father’s devotion as a lure to bring him in for the kill, to seal Kylo’s path to darkness.

Kylo Ren Is Everything That Anakin Skywalker Should Have Been

The march on the temple is... well, it’s a march. We don’t get to see Anakin’s reaction, feel something about it, or even understand why he’s doing it (other than the fact that it’s simply what Palaptine tells him to do). He just silently ignites his lightsaber in front of some Padawans. There’s no personal connection there for the audience to understand, or even be shocked by, like you are with Kylo’s sudden twist. No anguish. For a man meant to be driven by his emotions—his love of his wife, and his need to do anything to keep her safe—it’s such a sterile moment that it feels perfunctory. The raw edge that is meant to catapult Anakin from promising young Jedi to powerful Sith is simply never there, and when you see rawness in almost every moment Kylo Ren is on screen in The Force Awakens, its absence from the prequels becomes even more apparent.

There’s something a bit ironic in the fact that Kylo Ren’s ultimate desire is to become the man he thought his grandfather was—because as an outsider looking in on The Force Awakens, to me he’s already a far more interesting, and therefore more tragic, version of the man that would become Darth Vader than the Anakin Skywalker we saw in the prequels ever was.

Central American Migrants Deported by U.S. Sent to Their Deaths

Since January 2014, as many as 83 undocumented immigrants, having fled violence in their homes countries (only to be deported by the United States), have been murdered upon their return to El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. A Guardian investigation identified three separate Honduran men killed in their hometowns.

Last year saw a “surge” in arrivals at the border between U.S. and Mexico, especially of unaccompanied children—66,000 at its peak, in the summer—which has since declined. However, the Guardian reports, while the number of immigrants has decreased, the death rate among those still attempting the journey has risen:

Clara Long, an immigration researcher for Human Rights Watch, said that in the wake of the 2014 surge there had been a “generalized crackdown” across the immigration service. “Detention has been expanded and people are increasingly being put into fast-track deportation procedures in which their claims for asylum are not being properly considered.”

A recent Human Rights Watch report concluded that the increasing use of so-called “expedited removals” of people picked up by US officials along the Mexican border was returning many to potential danger even though they had expressed fears of returning home. “This comes down to our regard for the dignity and lives of others,” Long said. “Part of the identity of the US is that we adhere to international law, and that says that when people flee for their lives, states are obligated to provide them with protection. We are putting people through an increasingly criminalized detention-based system that risks returning people to their deaths.”

Mexico is also deporting migrants seeking refugee: after fleeing Honduras with his sister (they’d witnessed her boyfriend’s murder), 14-year-old Gredis Alexander Hernández was apprehended in Mexico and returned to his home country—first to a group home, and then to his family. Two days later, he was shot twice in the head while he slept. Police said his sister escaped the group home and fled the country again.

Bernie Sanders Adviser Says DNC Fed Them Staffer Who Stole Clinton Voter Files

The battle between Sen. Bernie Sanders and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) is about to come to fisticuffs—or, at least, some strongly-worded open letters.

The Senator from Vermont and part-time Larry David impersonator recently fired a staffer, Josh Uretsky, for taking advantage of a glitch in the DNC voter data system to access confidential records belonging to the Hillary Clinton campaign. This week, another Sanders staffer floated the idea that employees at the DNC originally recommended Uretsky, seeming to suggest that he may have been planted. Speaking to Yahoo’s Hunter Walker, the source said:

“It’s not as if we conjured this guy Josh from thin air. This is an individual … who was recommended to us by the DNC and NGP VAN [the company that owns the voter data software].”

According to the adviser, the DNC’s National Data Director Andrew Brown, an employee who works closely with the very same voter file program that Uretsky took data from, recommended Uretsky for the campaign.

“I just think it’s utter hypocrisy on their part. I mean here we are being attacked for the behavior of an individual, which we ultimately fired. We agree he acted improperly, but it’s just amazing to me that this … individual that actually caused this trouble in our campaign was recommended by these guys.”

Plant or no, the Sanders campaign is on the attack. In the wake of the debacle, the DNC temporarily cut Sanders off from his own voter data, a move that prompted a lawsuit and allegations that the organization was purposefully sandbagging him. The lawsuit will go on, Sanders said this earlier week. But even in all the hubbub, Sanders hasn’t stopped campaigning, and even sent out a little tweet about moms.

Investigators Suggest That Arson May be Cause of Houston Mosque Fire

A “suspicious” fire broke out Friday afternoon at a Houston mosque hours after services ended. According to Houston’s CBS affiliate KHOU, the fire began Christmas day around 2:30 p.m. Nobody was injured in the fire and firefighters were able to put out the blaze relatively quickly. Smoke damaged both the mosque and the businesses that shared the strip mall with the worship center. “With God’s grace, no one was hurt and nothing happened,” owner of the strip mall, Imran Momin, told the Houston Chronicle. “It happened on Christmas, thank God. So God was looking out.”

An ATF spokesperson confirmed to KHOU that the fire was “suspicious because the fire had multiple points of origin.” The Houston chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations urged authorities to consider bias as a potential motive. “Because of the recent spike in hate incidents targeting mosques nationwide, we urge law enforcement authorities to investigate a possible bias motive for this fire,” Houston CAIR told NBC.

The Washington Post notes that if, in fact, arson is the cause of the mosque’s fire, that it would be the latest in an increasing number of hate crimes committed against Muslims. Vandalized mosques have been reported in Florida, California, and Georgia. A study released earlier this month indicates that crimes against Muslims and mosques in America have tripled since both the Paris and San Bernardino attacks.

ISIS Leader Threatens Strike on 'Crusaders and Jews' in Israel

In his first audio statement released in seven months, the leader of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) threatened an attack on Israel and other nations in a statement on Saturday, according to CBS.

In the 24-minute statement, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, a self-proclaimed “caliphate,” said that the recent spate of U.S. and Russian airstrikes on the region have only fueled their anger. He also pinpointed “crusaders and Jews,” as the targets against whom he wants his followers to “rise up.”

“Jews, soon you shall hear from us in Palestine, which will become your grave,” Baghdadi reportedly said ... The Jews thought we forgot Palestine and that they had distracted us from it,” he added. “Not at all, Jews. We did not forget Palestine for a moment. With the help of Allah, we will not forget it.”

But CNN reports that Israeli officials are not taking the threat too seriously, noting that ISIS doesn’t have much sway in the country, and that it’s not even clear when the video was shot.
