500 Days of Kristin, Day 340: 2016 Goals

With just one day left in 2015, former Laguna Beach star Kristin Cavallari has yet to make any public statements about her hopes and dreams for the new year. We can only assume that her overarching goal is the same as it was in 2006, when she told People magazine, “I would love to have a career like Cameron Diaz’s.”

This has been 500 Days of Kristin.

Donald Trump Decries War on Hairspray

Donald Trump Decries War on Hairspray

At a rally in South Carolina today, Donald Trump gave a touching eulogy to the true victim of climate change—his own, unruly hair follicles.

“Obama doesn’t want to hit them too hard because he doesn’t want to pollute the atmosphere. This is real,” Trump emphasized as someone off in the distance screamed, “Not possible!”

Now, what exactly is it that is not possible? Is this anonymous screaming Trump supporter claiming it’s not possible to bomb someone “too hard,” or are they claiming that it’s not possible for nuclear bombs to affect environmental conditions? Both prospects are equally terrifying to consider, so for the sake of my personal well-being I am going to pretend that our public education system hasn’t been failing us and that question never asked.

Much easier to grapple with, though, is Trump’s issue with Obama’s apparent war on hairspray:

You can’t use hairspray. Because hairspray is going to affect the ozone. Let’s see—I’m in my room, in New York City, I want to put a little spray so that I can—*mimes styling his hair*—right? But I hear that they don’t want me to use hairspray... they say it’s bad for the ozone.

Fortunately for Donald Trump, aerosol cans stopped harming the ozone layer in the early 80s. Now that propellants have taken the place of CFCs for the past several decades, any voices telling you to switch hair styling techniques exist wholly within your own, mercilessly coiffed head.

Reports: Affluenza Teen Held In Mexico as Mother Deported Back to U.S.

Reports: Affluenza Teen Held In Mexico as Mother Deported Back to U.S.

Ethan “Affluenza” Couch’s mother, Tonya Couch, has been deported to the United States, Mexican officials told the Associated Press on Wednesday. The fugitive teen, meanwhile, will likely remain in Mexico for at least another two weeks and possibly several months.

Couch, who is wanted for violating his parole, and his mother, who is wanted for hindering her son’s apprehension, were detained on Monday in the Mexican resort town of Puerto Vallarta, after fleeing Texas (following a going-away party) earlier this month.

http://gawker.com/the-infamous-a...

At a news conference in Houston on Wednesday, Richard Hunter, chief deputy for the U.S. Marshals Service in South Texas, said that a three-day court injunction granted to Ethan Couch by a Mexican judge will put off his return until later next month at the earliest.

From the AP:

The ruling earlier Wednesday by the Mexican court gives a judge three days to decide whether the younger Couch has grounds to challenge his deportation based on arguments that kicking him out of the country would violate his rights.

Hunter said the legal maneuver basically takes the decision out of an immigration agent’s hands and asks a higher authority to make the deportation decision. He said such cases can often take anywhere from two weeks to several months, depending on the priorities of the local courts.

“It also depends on the fact the Couches have legal counsel. And it seems to me, if they wanted to, they could pay them as much money as they want to drag this thing out,” Hunter said. “We’re hopeful that’s not the case. We’re hopeful the Mexican immigration court will make a quick and decisive decision and return the Couches to America.”

Couch and his mother were being held by immigration officials in Guadalajara.

On Tuesday, Tarrant County District Attorney Sharen Wilson said that she planned to request that Couch’s case be transferred to adult court—now 18, he was 16 years old when he plead guilty to four counts of manslaughter in a drunk-driving incident—where he could face up to four months of jail time followed by 10 years of probation. Were he to violate that probation, Wilson said, Couch could face up to 10 years in prison per death. (So: 40 years.)

What's This? Just the Royal Family of Monaco Acting Like Regular Old Folks

Monaco’s royal twins Jacques and Gabriella recently turned one. Seems somebody at the office of royal affairs heard about the venerable American tradition of Christmas letters and decided to do something similar to mark the occasion—except it’s with video, not cozy, and frankly a bit weird.

This fascinating video comes via Lainey Gossip. It’s nothing wild—just Charlene and Albert sitting around recapping the last year and talking about their hopes for their children.

But it all adds up to create a strange vibe. For instance, Albert answers in exclusively in French, while Charlene sticks to English. Sure, both useful languages in Monaco, but it’s unusual to see couples do an interview in two totally different languages. Plus it’s strangely stilted. The babies are curious! The babies love their toys! It’s like being stuck on an airplane with a couple of bad conversationalists who clearly do not want to make small talk but feel obligated. How is it possible that even Prince Charles, in his awkward grandpa goofiness, seems more charming than a man who is literally Grace Kelly’s son?

Meanwhile the babies themselves continue to roll around on the floor, gnawing on bright plastic things.

Stick around for the end, which pairs swelling, triumphant choral music with pretty standard footage of the littlest royals. Royals: They’re definitely not anything like us!

Government Investigators Blame Yangtze Cruise Ship Disaster on the Weather

According to the New York Times, an investigation into the June 1 disaster on the Yangtze River, released by the Chinese government Wednesday through state media outlet Xinhua News, found that the incident, in which 442 people died, was caused by a combination of violent weather and human error.

http://gawker.com/death-toll-for...

All but a dozen people aboard the cruise ship (referred to by Xinhua as the “Eastern Star” and the Times as the “Oriental Star”) died after it capsized and sank overnight amid heavy rain and wind. Many of the passengers aboard the ship, which was on a multi-day pleasure cruise from Nanjing to Chongqing, the Times reports, were elderly.

“The sinking of the Oriental Star arose from sudden and rarely seen severe convective weather (a squall line accompanied by a downburst) that brought an onslaught of strong winds and heavy rains that led to this extraordinarily grave disaster,” the report said, according to the Times.

“The capacity of the Oriental Star to withstand winds and resist overturning was in line with the regulatory requirements, but it was not enough to withstand the extremely bad weather that it encountered.”

Among the survivors were the ship’s captain and its chief engineer, detained soon after the disaster. “The captain and first mate on duty had insufficient knowledge of extreme weather and its risks,” the report determined. “They never issued a distress message, did not issue a warning to the whole ship, and did not organize steps to abandon ship and disperse passengers.”

The report recommended that the captain, Zhang Shunwen, be stripped of his license and investigated further. The ship’s first mate was also found to be at fault; however, he died in the accident.

Altogether, Xinhua reported, more than 40 people will be punished in connection with the incident:

Though extreme weather was found to have caused the tragedy, the investigation also pointed to “problems in daily management and supervision”, with 43 people held accountable.

The owner of the Eastern Star, Chongqing Eastern Shipping Corp., modified the ballast tanks without requesting an official inspection afterward, according to the official report.

The firm also failed to give proper training to its crew on how to respond to inclement weather conditions, the report said.

The investigation team said the captain and his chief mates had “insufficient knowledge” about extreme weather and possible dangers, and “responded inadequately.”

Other flaws by the firm included insufficient checks on cabin facilities and lax monitoring over the ship’s condition.

Local authorities, including port and maritime safety administrators, were accused of inadequate ship examination and lax water transport permit issuance.

The investigation also dismissed earlier reports that a tornado had contributed to the ship’s capsizing.

San Bernardino Shooters' Former Neighbor Indicted on Terrorism Charges

Enrique Marquez, the 24-year-old former neighbor of the San Bernardino shooters Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, was indicted Wednesday on charges of conspiring to provide material support to terrorists, Reuters reports.

The indictment, handed down by U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, charges Marquez with conspiring with Farook, in 2011 and 2012, in a terror attack that they never carried out, and of lying to federal authorities about the purchase of two assault rifles Farook and Malik used in their deadly rampage earlier this month.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the indictment supersedes an earlier criminal complaint, and brings the total number of charges to five. If convicted, Marquez now faces up to 50 years in federal prison.

http://gawker.com/friend-of-san-...

In a statement, David Bowdich, assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles field office, said, “Mr. Marquez is charged for his role in a conspiracy several years ago to target innocent civilians in our own backyard with cold-blooded terror attacks, and with providing weapons to an individual whose endgame was murder.”

“The covert nature of the defendant’s alleged actions is a stark reminder of the challenges we face in preventing attacks planned in the name of violent jihad, and underscores the critical need for those with knowledge about terror plots to come forward.”

Prosecutors say the two men met in 2004. While Farook is said to have introduced the younger man to radical Islamic theology, Marquez, who called 911 the day of the December 2nd shooting and reported that Farook had used his gun, is not thought to have had prior knowledge of the recent attack.

Later, he checked into a mental health institution, the Times reports, and voluntarily spoke with federal agents investigating the shooting, having waived his right to an attorney while hospitalized.

Earlier this week, the New York Times reported, with studied skepticism, that “it is at least possible that Jeb Bush is funny.” In Lexington, South Carolina, tonight, the struggling scion gave Senator Katrina Shealy a “funny” nickname. Can you guess what it was?

Ahh, well. The possibility remains, at least.

Ex-Police Chief Charged With Murdering Pregnant Fiancee Marries Her Sister

Russell Bertram, a former police chief from South Dakota who was charged with killing his 26-year-old fiancee, Leonila Stickney, in 2009, took out hundreds of thousands in multiple life insurance policies before she died. He also ended up marrying his fiancee’s sister.

This past September, Bertram was indicted for intentionally shooting his fiancee during a hunting trip in October 2009. Bertram’s trial is scheduled to begin in February, reports AP. Prosecutors plan to present evidence that Bertram filed for bankruptcy in 2008 and took out a $750,000 life insurance policy for his fiancee in January 2009, and another in February with a $150,000 accidental death benefit. Bertram was listed as the beneficiary on both of the policies. An expert is also expected to testify that Stickney was pregnant during the time of her death.

Initially, Stickney’s death was believed to be an accident. Bertram, who served as police chief in Harrisburg from 1996 to 2004, told authorities that he was putting his gun into a vehicle when it accidentally went off and hit Stickney. Charlie Wolf, the police sheriff at the time, told AP that Bertram’s questionable behavior following the death and inconsistencies in his story “sparked a little more interest.”

In 2010, state authorities took over the inquiry as a cold case. Additional evidence eventually led to Bertram’s arrest in September of this year. He has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder. If convicted, Bertram faces the death penalty or a mandatory life sentence.

The New Case Against Bill Cosby Is Mostly Based On Evidence Authorities Had All Along

The New Case Against Bill Cosby Is Mostly Based On Evidence Authorities Had All Along

Bill Cosby was charged yesterday with three counts of aggravated indecent assault by authorities in Montgomery County, Pa., for what happened back in 2004, when Andrea Constand said Cosby invited her over to his home, drugged, and assaulted her. At the time, Constand was the director of operations for the women’s basketball program at Temple, and Cosby was a prominent booster. The charges were announced today.

Constand went to the police, but then-Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce Castor said no charges would be filed in due to insufficient evidence. Since then, with scores of women coming forward saying they were drugged and raped by Cosby, the case was reopened and re-investigated. So what changed between then and now? Only District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman knows for certain, but the complaint filed by the D.A.’s office provides a detailed outline of what prosecutors believe happened. It also provides a look at just how much of the evidence against Cosby was old—and either known to law enforcement already or, until the Associated Press intervened, kept under seal by the courts.

What follows is based on the criminal complaint filed. It outlines how Cosby built a relationship with Constand, to the point she considered him a mentor. He invited her to gatherings at his home that included the president of Swathmore College and professors from University of Pennsylvania. She went to his place in New York City to meet his entertainment industry contacts. Cosby also made sexual advances toward her, twice, which Constand rebuffed. Sometime between mid-January and mid-February in 2004, Cosby invited Constand over for dinner, just her and him alone.

That night, Constand was talking about how she felt “drained” and “emotionally occupied.” Cosby said he wanted her to relax, then left and came back with some pills. He said they were herbal and urged her to take them. “These will make you feel good,” he said, according to the complaint. “The blue things take the edge off.” He told her to put the pills in her mouth and wash them down with water. Constant did because she trusted him.

Cosby also urged Constand to take a few sips of wine. Within 20 to 30 minutes, Constand said she had blurry vision and trouble speaking. She told Cosby, who helped her get to the couch. He told her that he was “going to let [her] relax.”

The victim described to the police the wide range of physical symptoms she experiences during this time. She said that she lost all the strength in her legs, which felt “rubbery” and “like jelly.” She could not see clearly because everything had become “blurry” and “dizzy.” She felt “nauseous.” She could not keep her eyes open, was not aware o any sounds, had no sense of time, and was “in and out.”

Cosby did not sit on the sofa with her, but instead positions himself behind her. Despite her impaired physical and mental condition, the victim was aware that Cosby was fondling her breasts, put her hands into her pants, and penetrated her vagina with his fingers. Cosby also took the victim’s right hand and placed it onto his erect penis. The victim told investigators that she did not consent to any of these acts, and was unable to move or speak during the assault. She described her condition as “frozen” and “paralyzed.”

She woke up about 4 a.m. with her sweater bunched up and her bra undone. Cosby gave her a muffin, walked her to the front door, and said “alright.” Constand left Temple in March and moved back home to Canada, where on Jan. 13, 2005, she told her mother what happened. The family soon afterward reported it to the police.

When did police know this? The only detailed attribution in this part of the complaint references a written statement Constand gave to police on Jan. 22, 2005. A few times after that, there are mentions of Constand talking to police. If any of these details were drawn from her civil complaint, this document doesn’t point that out.

After her daughter told her what happened, Constand’s mother, Gianna, also called Cosby, leaving him a voicemail. He got back to her three days later. What followed was a string of conversations with Cosby in which, the complaint says, he “admitted fondling the victim’s breasts, digitally penetrating her vagina, and placing the victim’s hands on his penis for sexual gratification” He apologized, and “offered to cover any expenses associated with therapy.” As for the pills he gave Constand? Cosby said he couldn’t read the bottle label because of an “eye condition,” the complaint says, but he would write down the name and mail it to her.

Cosby called again, the next day. Gianna Constand recorded the conversation.

The New Case Against Bill Cosby Is Mostly Based On Evidence Authorities Had All Along

The New Case Against Bill Cosby Is Mostly Based On Evidence Authorities Had All Along

The next day a Cosby representative called to arrange a meeting between Andrea Constand, Gianna Constand, and Cosby in Florida. The two women declined. The Cosby representative provided a statement to investigators saying that Cosby had told him to contact Constand and arrange the trip. He added that “he had made similar arrangements for other women on Cosby’s behalf.” The statement was dated given on Feb. 4, 2005. And that detail about digital penetration, also from 2005, would factor into the charges brought yesterday.

In 2005, police talked to Cosby, who said he gave Constand Benadryl but “he did not tell the victim, on that night or anytime thereafter, the true identity of the pills.” He described what happened as a “consensual sexual encounter,” the complaint says. Cosby said their relationship had been social as well as romantic and that he never had intercourse with Constand because he “like[d] the petting and touching.”

“When asked if he ever had intercourse with the victim,” the complaint says, “Cosby gave the unusual answer, ‘never asleep or awake.’”

Cosby also told investigators that he had apologized to Constand’s mother, and the meeting in Florida was to “iron out whatever these problems happen to be.” According to the timeline as written out in the complaint, all these statements and facts were gathered before then-District Attorney Bruce Castor announced on Feb. 17, 2005, that his office would not charge Cosby.

So what changed? From what’s revealed in the complaint two things happened between then and now: More women came forward, and the depositions from Constand’s civil case were unsealed.

Constand brought a civil suit against Cosby a month later. Unlike the criminal investigation, which made almost no information about what happened public, Constand’s civil action aired many of the details of how she said Cosby built a relationship with her, assaulted her, and then tried to keep her family quiet. It also revealed the many ways Cosby and his backers tried to make her story go away. It was settled on Nov. 8, 2006, and several depositions taken as part of that case were sealed.

This year, after multiple women came forward saying they too had been drugged and raped by Cosby, the sealed court documents were released, thanks to the legal fighting of the Associated Press, which also tried and failed to make the documents public back in 2005. The court documents included large chunks of the depositions, which later were released in full by the court reporting service that held them. (A hold on releasing them further was placed within days of a New York Times story about them.) Here is how the complaint discusses the release of those documents, which are nearly a decade old.

The release of these depositions generated a great deal of publicity, as well as a number of public claims by women who alleged Cosby had assaulted them under circumstances similar to those reported by the victim. These events prompted the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office, now led by District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman, to review the statute of limitations regarding potential criminal offenses committed by Cosby against the victim. District Attorney Ferman determined that under Pennsylvania law, prosecution for Aggravated Indecent Assault must be commenced within twelve years after the offense has been committed. As such, the statute of limitations has not yet expired, and the investigation was reopened on July 10, 2015.

Investigators re-interviewed Constand, who said she would cooperate if asked to. She said that in her initial call with Cosby she told him “you are a very sick man,” and that he agreed and apologized. They also reviewed her deposition from the civil case, and the summary of that in the complaint matches what she told police. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported today, according to to sources familiar with the probe, that investigators also “have since interviewed several individuals who were close to her or Cosby at the time of the alleged assault.” Those interviews are not mentioned in the complaint.

Investigators reviewed Cosby’s depositions, and noticed both where they conflicted and where they agreed with what he had told police. Cosby told police that he gave Constand “one whole and then one ... half” of a pill. In the deposition, he said he gave her “three halved pills,” which he called “three friends to make [her] relax.” Here is what follows next in the complaint:

He testified, as reported to the police, that after the administration of the pills, he lifted the victim’s bra so their skin could touch, got behind the victim “in a spooning position,” and, while in that position, he went “inside of her pants” and digitally the victim’s vagina.

The complaint goes on to point out the much reported-on detail in the deposition where Cosby talked about keeping Quaaludes on him when pressed by Constand’s lawyer. She asked “When you got the Quaaldues, was it in your mind that you were going to use these Quaaludes for young women that you wanted to have sex with?” Cosby answered “yes.” The complaint follows with more details about Cosby’s use of Quaaludes, as taken from the depositions—that he said he once met a woman backstage, gave her Quaaludes, then had sex with her; that he said of the drug that“there were times he wanted to have them just in case”; that Cosby didn’t take them himself because, he said, “he gets sleepy.”

In terms of new evidence given in the complaint, that’s it.

Near the end, the complaint launches into a recap of events and discussion about about why the charges are appropriate. It talks about Cosby’s use of Quaaludes and his “evasive and conflicting identifications of the drug he gave the victim,” which are “inconsistent of innocent behavior and demonstrate his consciousness of guilt.” Another detail included is Cosby’s phone apology and financial offer to the Constands.

Investigators recognize that individuals who are falsely accused of sexual assault generally do not unilaterally offer generous financial assistance, and apologies, to their accuser and their accuser’s family. To the contrary, such conduct is consistent with offenders who are seeking to make amends from wrongful behavior and prevent involvement by law enforcement.

The last part talks more about details revealed by Cosby that provide “unusually compelling insight regarding Cosby’s sexual relationships with women, including his assaultive behavior towards the victim.” The complaint notes that Cosby made sure Gianna Constand understood “there was no ‘penile penetration’ involved” and Cosby had given police the “never asleep or awake” answer when asked if he had sex with Andrea Constand.

Those are chilling details—and details that authorities had in 2005. So much of this was known to investigators at the time, according to the complaint’s timeline. Yes, the depositions provide new insights and details, but those didn’t become available because of diligent police work. They became public because of legal action brought by the AP, after months of public outcry. If police or prosecutors were trying to get copies of the depositions, I haven’t seen documents indicating that in the court file. (It is, of course, possible that prosecutors have more new evidence they chose not to include in the complaint.)

The bottom line is that the case against Cosby appears to have been built on evidence that was available a decade ago. That evidence didn’t change. What changed was how much people wanted to see it, and how willing they were to believe it.

Brussels Police Confirm Investigation into Terror Orgy Reports

On Wednesday, the New York Times reports, police officials in Brussels confirmed that they had begun an investigation into earlier reports of an orgy, involving eight soldiers and two policewomen, amidst the November manhunt for Islamic State operatives trying to get out of Europe following the Paris attacks.

http://gawker.com/reports-belgia...

“I cannot give more information on the internal investigation, because it is ongoing and because investigations into the Brussels police force are highly complicated,” the Brussels-West police spokeswoman told the Times.

“Right now, we don’t know the extent of the investigation yet. Maybe officers from other zones are implicated, and I don’t want to set off an internal fight by commenting on police officers from other zones. Internal investigations into the Brussels police are, as a rule, highly complicated and very sensitive.”

Meanwhile, Ilse Van de Keere, the police commissioner for Brussels-Capital, which oversees the center of the city, and is adjacent to the Brussels-West district, said that she would “absolutely not comment about anything that happened on another territory.”

“We all read the newspapers, just like anyone else, and are aware of this story about an orgy between police officers and army soldiers,” Van de Keere said.

“All these people have been working closely together for weeks now, often doing long hours,” she continued. “We have developed a very good working relationship with the army.”

Belgian news publication La Dernière Heure had previously reported that several police officers from the division where about 20 Belgian soldiers were temporarily barracked said their female colleagues were “toutes chaudes et toutes folles” at the idea of sleeping with the military men.

Anne Frank's Diary and Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf Both Enter the Public Domain on Friday

A copyright fight is brewing in Europe this week as the deadline after which two key WWII-era texts will fall within the public domain steadily approaches. In Europe, a book becomes public domain 70 years after the author’s death, on the first day of January. This Friday, January 1st, both Anne Frank’s Diary of a Young Girl and Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf will enter the public domain.

Olivier Ertzscheid, a lecturer at the University of Nantes and self-proclaimed copyright “activist,” and Isabelle Attard, a member of the French parliament, both told Agence France-Presse that they planned to publish version of the diary online—Ertzscheid in the original Dutch, Attard in French.

The Basel-based Anne Frank Fund, which holds the rights to publication, said that it had threatened legal action if the diary was published. From AFP:

The Fund argues that the book is a posthumous work, for which copyright extends 50 years past the publication date, and that a 1986 version published by the Dutch State Institute for War Documentation (NIOD) is under copyright until at least 2037.

Attard criticised the move as a “question of money”, adding that if the work was in the public domain Frank would win “even more renown”.

Meanwhile, Mein Kampf will also enter the public domain on Friday. The southern German state of Bavaria has held the book’s copyright since Hitler’s death in 1945. According to AFP, the state has not permitted the text to be republished in 70 years out of respect for the Nazis’ victims. (Some 12.4 million copies were printed before the Nazis’ fall.)

Since 2009, however, historians at the Institute of Contemporary History of Munich have prepared an annotated version of the 800 page text that runs to 2,000 pages, in two volumes, that intends to “deconstruct and put into context Hitler’s writing.” The Associated Press reports that only 4,000 copies have been printed. It will retail at $65.

Might a Money-Sucking Family Political Dynasty Be Problematic?

Might a Money-Sucking Family Political Dynasty Be Problematic?

Many wild-eyed democracy extremists say that perhaps the United States of America should not just elect presidents who are direct family members of other presidents. But why?

Not just because the thought of political dynasties makes you vaguely want to throw up. There are other reasons. For example: Bill Clinton, who was the US President, now gives speeches for high fees and runs a charitable organization with his wife, Hillary Clinton, who is running for president. Might there be any potential for companies, foreign governments, and interest groups to use this family network to politely seek influence? I know that it is shocking to even contemplate the idea that a corporation paying Bill Clinton half a million dollars for a half hour speech might have ulterior motives, but we must keep open minds. Here is a very brief rundown of facts from the Wall Street Journal, which took a look at Bill’s speaking career while Hillary was running the State Department:

[During Hillary Clinton’s State Department tenure] more than two dozen companies and groups and one foreign government paid former President Bill Clinton a total of more than $8 million to give speeches around the time they also had matters before Mrs. Clinton’s State Department, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis.

Fifteen of them also donated a total of between $5 million and $15 million to the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation, the family’s charity, according to foundation disclosures.

Now: it would be rather crude and unsophisticated to equate these mere facts to outright bribery. It would be equally crude and unsophisticated to imagine that Goldman Sachs and UBS and Samsung and the government of Abu Dhabi were pouring dump trucks full of money into the Clinton family’s coffer just for the privilege of hearing Bill free-associate for 20 minutes. It would be most accurate to view all this as a general form of influence-seeking, if a highly regulated and relatively transparent one.

As long as every U.S. citizen can afford to pay Bill Clinton $500K to come give a speech to their book group, we won’t have to worry if political dynasties can warp our democracy. So chill.

Obama to Seinfeld: Many World Leaders Are Completely Insane

Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee premiered online at Crackle last night with a very special episode featuring the president. They drove some old Corvette thing and walked around the White House lawn before Seinfeld asked a serious question: “How many world leaders do you think are just completely out of their mind?”

“A pretty sizable percentage,” Obama answered confidently. Nice!!!

“Part of what happens is these guys, I think the longer they stay in office, the more likely that is to happen,” he went on to explain. “They lose it,” Seinfeld offered.

Obama continued, deadpanning, “At a certain point your feet hurt, and you’re having trouble peeing, and you have absolute power...”

You can watch the entire episode, in which the two discuss football and who has more money (Seinfeld, obviously), at Crackle here.

Israel Bans Arab-Jewish Romance Novel in Schools Over Fears of Race-Mixing

Israel Bans Arab-Jewish Romance Novel in Schools Over Fears of Race-Mixing

In a move one might expect from an Education Minister who’s said such things as “when Palestinians were climbing trees, we already had a Jewish state” and “I’ve killed lots of Arabs in my life, and there’s no problem with that,” Israel has banned an Arab-Jewish romance novel from schools for “threatening Jewish identity.” Or put more simply, it banned the book over fears that it encourages race-mixing.

The novel, Dorit Rabinyan’s Gader Haya, tells the story of an Israeli woman and Palestinian man who fall in love. The work was recommended for advanced literature curriculums by both the official in in charge of literature instruction in secular state schools and “a professional committee of academics and educators, at the request of a number of teachers,” according to Haaretz.

In explaining its reasoning for banning the book, the ministry cited its responsibility to maintain “the identity and the heritage of students in every sector” as well as the idea that “intimate relations between Jews and non-Jews threatens the separate identity.” All of which is to say, Israel’s education ministry believes it has a responsibility to keep Israeli blood pure and Arab-free.

Shlomo Herzig, the ministry’s head of literature studies, tried to appeal the decision to no avail earlier this month, writing:

In all my all too many years as head of literature studies, I don’t recall even a single instance that a work of literature recommended by a professional committee by virtue of its authority, after thorough and deep discussion, was not approved for use by the chairman of the pedagogic secretariat.

The acute problem of Israeli society today is the terrible ignorance and racism that is spreading in it, and not concern over intermarriage. The idea that a work of literature is liable to be the trigger for romanticizing such a connection in reality is simply ridiculous.

The most horrible sin that comes to mind in teaching literature (and other subjects) is eliminating all or some work which we don’t favor out of ethical considerations. In such a situation, there is no reason to teach literature at all. If we would have wanted our students to study only ‘respectable’ and conservative works, we would be left without a curriculum, or with a list of shallow and dull works of literature.

In response to this, acting chair Dalia Fenzig wrote that the novel “presents the reader in a very tangible and powerful way with the dilemma of the institutionalization of the love while he [the reader] doesn’t have the full tools to weigh the decisions of such a nature.” Which translates roughly to: Until these kids finish their military service, how will they know who to hate?

Fenzig also wrote that “many parents in the state school system would strongly object to having their children study the novel.” Or: many Israeli parents are just as racist as their government is.

Another Bad Year for Gold Bugs

Another Bad Year for Gold Bugs

Gold, the favored investment of Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, and the old man at the post office who invited you over to see his industrial-size canned bean supply room, is down for the third straight year.

Since peaking at “So many crazy fearful people” levels in 2011, the price of gold has fallen by 45%, including a 10% decline in 2015. Here is the price of a kilo of gold over the past five years:

Another Bad Year for Gold Bugs

“Well,” you might be thinking to yourself as you sip an alcohol-infused “cider” drink, “It’s low now—time to buy!” Here is the price of gold over the past 20 years:

Another Bad Year for Gold Bugs

Still a lot farther to fall!

If you’re wondering “Why are people paying less for gold these days?” perhaps it would be more instructive to wonder, “Why is anyone paying anything for gold any day?” Stupid worthless rock.

“At least if you buy a house, you can eat it.” -Warren Buffett**

A bet on gold is a bet that your fellow citizens will get more scared, more irrational, and lose touch with the real world to an even greater degree next year. So... not a bad bet.

The Best Posts About Kristin Cavallari on Gawker in 2015

Gawker sure wrote a lot about Kristin Cavallari this year, huh? Bet you’d like to know which of those posts you should catch up on before the new year. Here’s a quick roundup of our favorites from 2015:

Kristin Cavallari Has a Brand New Book Dropping in 400-500 Days

The Best Posts About Kristin Cavallari on Gawker in 2015

What will you be doing roughly 13-17 months from now? Maybe you’ll finally be taking a stay-cation in sunny Tulum, where you could live by then. Perhaps you’ll be starting a new job at the soda can factory. You might even be well into your second pregnancy if you start on the first one right now. Change is scary, but take comfort in the knowledge that while your life may look different 400-500 days from now, one thing is for certain: you’ll be able to read former Laguna Beach star Kristin Cavallari’s first book then, probably.

500 Days of Kristin, Day 1: What the Fuck, Babe?

The Best Posts About Kristin Cavallari on Gawker in 2015

Kristin Cavallari’s first book, Balancing on Heels, drops in approximately 500 days. Starting today, we will begin marking the days on our calendar, which is a special two-year calendar, so don’t worry, it has enough days. We will also mark the days here on Defamer, every day, for the next 500 days. What’s happening on Day One of 500 Days of Kristin? Kristin’s leaning in.

500 Days of Kristin, Day 2: She Ate Everything but the Sour Cream

The Best Posts About Kristin Cavallari on Gawker in 2015

Flaubert once noted that “the art of writing is the art of discovering what you believe.” This couldn’t be more true for Kristin Cavallari, who is discovering through writing that she believes in carbs, but only some carbs—not the white ones. On the 498th day before her game-changing tip book Balancing on Heels drops, Kristin has made us a food diary.

500 Days of Kristin, Day 3: She Can Look Skinny, Doesn’t Like That Look

The Best Posts About Kristin Cavallari on Gawker in 2015

Today, Kristin is distracted from writing her debut book Balancing on Heels—due out in 497 days—by her own (low) weight. She tells E! News, “I can look really skinny and I don’t like that look. So, yes, I’m drinking protein shakes, I’m trying to put on muscle and I’m lifting very heavy weight right now.”

500 Days of Kristin, Day 4: Who Is Kristin’s Best Bitch?

The Best Posts About Kristin Cavallari on Gawker in 2015

Four hundred and ninety-six days until Kristin Cavallari’s debut book Balancing on Heels drops, and today she points us to a mystery. Might she explain this mystery in her book? Hard to say, but here it is: If Kristin had to pick one person as her best friend, who would she pick?

The Best Posts About Kristin Cavallari on Gawker in 2015
