Gentrified Sesame Street Is Here

Sesame Street’s 46th season premiered on HBO today, with back-to-back half-hour episodes (the shortened run time, down from hourlong shows, is “is viewed as a more manageable amount of time for children to focus,” according to a recent New York Times piece). With the new episodes’ controversial move from PBS to a premium cable network comes ground-level changes, some of which are reflected in the clips above from the first two episodes—Elmo’s in his brownstone (which overlooks a bridge that resembles Philadelphia’s Walt Whitman), Oscar’s got his recycling bin, and Hooper’s Store now looks a place where you can buy a bunch of kale, Stumptown Coffee, and a stick of butter. Muppets, after all, have always been artisanal, through and through.

For contrast, here’s a screen shot from a Season 45 episode that originally aired in September 2014:

Gentrified Sesame Street Is Here

It’s not exactly a radical aesthetic revision, but this quote from Carmen Osbahr, Rosita’s puppeteer of 26 years, in the Times is telling:

It is more like things look now. When Sesame Street was created, it was kind of more like New York Bronx. Now, Oscar has a recycling can. That is amazing.

The Times says that the story lines will focus on a smaller group of characters (Elmo, Abby, Cookie Monster and Rosita), while Big Bird, Mr. Snuffleupagus, Oscar the Grouch, and Bert and Ernie “still make appearances.” Pushing out most of the residents who’ve been there the longest, I see. Isn’t that always the way these things go?

4 Jihadis and 23 Civilians Dead After Al Qaeda Gunmen Storm Luxury Burkina Faso Hotel

Overnight on Friday, gunmen linked to Al Qaeda seized a luxury hotel, popular with Westerners, in the capital of Burkina Faso. By Saturday morning, security forces had killed four attackers, the Associated Press reports. At least 23 other people were also killed.

Three of the attackers were killed at the Splendid Hotel, in Ouagadougou, the nation’s capital, President Roch Marc Christian Kabore said on national radio. Two were women. The fourth attacker was killed at a second hotel nearby.

About 33 people were wounded in the siege and 126 freed, the AP reports. An Al Qaeda affiliate, Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM, claimed responsibility for the attack, calling for “revenge against France and the disbelieving West.” Burkina Faso is a former French colony.

Burkina Faso security forces were supported by French military and one U.S. military service member. From the New York Times:

France, which maintains a military garrison in Burkina Faso, scrambled to respond to the siege, sending 30 of its soldiers to assist at least 40 from Burkina Faso’s military who massed outside the hotel. Witnesses reported that the forces began a counterassault to retake the hotel early Saturday. One witness, Olympia de Maismont, said that “several hostages had been freed” and that intermittent gunfire could be heard. Later, Rémis Dandjinou, Burkina Faso’s minister of communication, said that 63 people had been freed, 33 of whom had been wounded.

A Defense Department official in Washington said the French had requested surveillance and reconnaissance help from the American military, which has 75 personnel in Burkina Faso, mostly involved in training and advising as well as maintaining a drone base. The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said one American military member was “providing advice and assistance” to French forces outside the hotel. No other American military personnel were believed to be directly involved.

According to the Times, AQIM has previously focused its operations in Mali and Algeria.

Anne Hathaway Would Like You To Stop Tearing the 'Beautiful, Talented,' Jennifer Lawrence Down

Anne Hathaway decided to weigh in on the Jennifer Lawrence-Golden Globes non-controversy. In a Facebook post, Hathaway, who identified herself as “a J-Law fan,” defended Lawrence who was recently criticized for being rude after she scolded a journalist in a post-Globes press conference.

“Dear the Internet, It’s become pretty clear that the Jennifer Lawrence ‘scolding’ was taken out of context and that she was dryly joking with a journalist who was indeed using his phone to take photos of her,” Hathaway wrote.

“Let’s not continue the sad but common practice of building people — especially women — up just to viciously tear them down when we perceive them to have misstepped,” she added. Hathaway clearly felt very passionate about the incident, adding “Jennifer is a beautiful, talented, wildly successful, popular, FOUR TIME OSCAR NOMINATED young woman. Please let us not punish her for these things.”

Unsurprisingly unable to resist a hashtag, Hathaway signed off: ‪#‎supportstrongwomen‬ ‪#‎imwithher‬ ‪#‎whycantwegiveloveonemorechance‬.

Can’t believe I missed the 15th anniversary of Lizzie McGuire. Hillary Duff took a moment to remember the very excellent show:

The funeral for Céline Dion’s husband, René Angélil, will be held Friday, January 22 at the same church where he and Dion were married. His obituary reads:

“According to his final wishes, his funeral will be held at Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal, where 21 years ago, he chose to marry the one who will remain as the great love of his life, the artist for which he had the most respect, the woman who gave him light and happiness until his very last breath.”

Texas Patriot Movement Member Killed As Militia Drama Turns Deadly

On Monday evening, two members of the American militia movement, Charles Carter and Vincent Smith, got into an argument at Smith’s house, in the small Texas town of Pottsboro, just across the border from Oklahoma. The argument turned violent: Smith shot Carter in the head, killing him.

Mandy Sulser, Carter’s girlfriend, told Gawker by phone this morning that police said the incident was “possible self defense, but that they are investigating further.” Carter and Sulser had recently moved into an RV on Smith’s property, the Sherman Denison Herald Democrat reported, after pawning all of their belongings and ending up homeless:

Through a Facebook friend, Sulser and Mr. Carter were put in touch with Smith, who helped Mr. Carter buy back his belongings from a pawnshop. Sulser said Smith spent more than $1,000 helping them get back their things. Ultimately Mr. Carter and Sulser came to live in a motor home on Smith’s property.

“It was a great start,” Sulser said. “And it had all been great up until a week or so ago. Tensions were getting high and tense between not only me and Vincent, but between Charles and Vincent. And it’s like the more Charles would try the more tense it got from Vincent.”

The two men were co-organizers of the “Paul Revere Liberty March,” or the “Paul Revere 2016 Final March to Restore America.” One possible reason for the tension, Sulser suggested to the Herald Democrat, was a dispute over control of the group’s Facebook page.

On the Liberty March’s website—which includes a section on the “rules of engagement” (“Coming soon”), as well as tips on “Water Purification For Preppers” and constitutional law—Smith describes the movement as “a march/caravan starting from multiple points on the west coast, and advancing across America gathering steam and troops, with its final destination Washington DC and Final Aim at removing the corrupt leadership that has taken over our beloved country and ousted her God and constitution.”

“It will be advertised that we will do this thing ‘As peacefully as possible’ But we will not be turned away,” Smith writes [sic. throughout]. “i Swear to God when we are done restoring America we will reach out to our brothers and sisters world wide and save them from the Tyrannical threat that at this moment is consuming them. I speak of Europe, Australia, and the entire western and third world.”

Smith has not been charged with a crime. “At the end of the investigation, all the collected information will be turned over to the district attorney and they will make the determination about whether charges will be filed against Mr. Smith,” Lt. Sarah Bigham said. However, News 12 KXII reports that friends have claimed the men were arguing drunkenly over a gun.

Bill Williamson, the organizer of “2 Million Bikers 2 DC,” said he had been messaging with Carter just before the shooting. Screenshot via Raw Story:

Many of the messages written on the Paul Revere Facebook page seem to be attributed to several different people, but one, posted two days after the shooting, appears to have been written by Smith himself:

I am struggling, I am grieving, I am in so much pain i dont know how i will go on. If i could go back in time and change it i would surely do so. I will struggle with this to the end of my days. Lord i look to you for your guidance, give me strength, give me understanding. Charles Carter my brother Rest in Peace There were other choices my friend, you gave me none. I am glad to be alive, but i am not glad you are gone. In Jesus holy name i pray. Amen

Carter himself alluded to tensions in the movement, in a video uploaded to Facebook two days before his death. “There’s a lot of people in the patriot movement right now that are fighting with each other. A house divided’s not gonna stand,” Carter said. “If you’ve got something negative to say, keep it to yourself. I don’t care who started it. It’s like a bunch of children fighting with each other. It’s a division in our own ranks. That’s a problem.”

http://gawker.com/drama-alert-th...

The idea for the march, one man, Everest Wilhelmsen (who previously sought financial support to assassinate President Obama) wrote on the Facebook group, came from a member of the Christian American Patriots Militia.

“The idea for the march/convoy beginning on the west coast and gaining steam and troops as it headed to DC came from a member of Christian American Patriots Militia,” Wilhelmsen wrote. “I then communicated the idea to Vincent Smith and Charles Carter on December 22, 2015. We all thought it to be a great idea and decided to move with the idea immediately.”

“Personally, I do not believe that what has happened should put an end to the march to restore America this spring,” he added. “Despite the reports that Charles was intoxicated and that his friend acted in self- defense, I have decided to change the name of the march/convoy to DC to ‘Charles Carter 2016 March To Restore America.’”

“In the short time that I knew Charles, he revealed himself to me as a true God fearing Patriot who was highly motivated to restore our Republic and working hard to prepare the march/convoy on DC this spring. In our few chats on Facebook he repeatedly called me his ‘brother’. And that is what he is to me—a brother.”

As of this morning, the Paul Revere March appeared to have been cancelled. Attempts to contact the page’s administrator, whoever it is, have not been successful. “I can’t disclose anything further, but I can tell you that the man that shot him has lawyered up,” Sulser, Carter’s girlfriend, told Gawker. “So read into that what you want.”

Update – 1:00 pm

“No the March has not been canceled!” Glen Estes, who identified himself as the march’s new leader, told Gawker in a Facebook message. “We roll on.”

Former Prosecutor Made Agreement With Bill Cosby To Keep 2005 Deposition Out of Criminal Trial

In his 2005 civil deposition, Bill Cosby admitted to buying Quaaludes, “with the intent of giving them to young women he wanted to have sex with.” That admission came during a lawsuit filed by Andrea Constand who claims that Cosby raped her in 2004. Constand sued Cosby for battery, assault, and defamation.

The case was settled out of court in 2006, but Cosby’s admission revealed a pattern among his attacks. Many of the over fifty women who have accused Cosby said that the comedian drugged them. Now it looks like former Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce Castor made an agreement with Cosby to keep his 2005 admission out of any potential criminal trial.

The New York Daily News reports that the agreement says “if Cosby testified in a civil case brought against him by accuser Andrea Constand then that testimony would never be used against Cosby in a criminal case.” In an email to his successor, Castor wrote:

“I can see no possibility that Cosby’s deposition could be used in a state criminal case, because I would have to testify as to what happened, and the deposition would be subject to suppression. I cannot believe any state court judge would allow that deposition into evidence.”

Kevin Steele, the current district attorney who is prosecuting Cosby, said that Castor’s claim is without merit. “There is a specific legal method to grant immunity,” Steele said. “That was not done in 2005.”

The deposition, in which Cosby said that he gave Constand, “three friends to make (her) relax,” was cited as a key piece of evidence prior to Cosby’s arrest. In a statement, Cosby’s attorneys claimed that the charges brought by Steele were illegal and unethical.

The criminal charges brought against Cosby, the statement says, “violate an express agreement made by the Montgomery County District Attorney in 2005, in which the Commonwealth agreed that Mr. Cosby would never be prosecuted with respect to the allegations of sexual assault made by complainant Andrea Constand.”

Cosby was arraigned on charges of aggravated assault in December 2015. He is currently awaiting a trial date.

Here's the Interview Where Donald Trump Expresses His "New York Values"

Here is the 1999 interview, brought to you by the Cruz campaign, in which Donald Trump elucidates what Ted Cruz now is referring to as “New York values.” He deflects a question about same-sex marriage, tacitly supports gays serving in the military, and declares himself “very pro-choice.”

http://gawker.com/sensitive-new-...

“I’ve lived in New York City and Manhattan all my life,” Trump said. “So, you know, my views are a little different than if I lived in Iowa—perhaps.”

In the Washington Post’s analysis:

Rather than try to attach the old “flip-flopper” label that has plagued politicians from John Kerry to Mitt Romney, they’ve come up with a new catch phrase: “New York values.”

It was a smart move. It has allowed the Cruz campaign to resurface Trump’s old liberal positions in a way that doesn’t seem stale and like something the media has covered before. The phrase “New York values” has gotten buzz over the last week in a way “flip-flopper” never would have.

But “New York values” ends up signifying a whole lot more than “flip-flopper” ever did: “I think most people know exactly what New York values are,” Cruz suggested during the debate. At one level—with his invocation of money and media—it seems very clear that Cruz is dealing barely-coded anti-Semitism.

At another level, though, he’s right: Trump is exemplary of a certain set of New York values—namely, those by which New York becomes a place where capitalism is treated as bloodsport (one with which Cruz himself is of course all too familiar).

Hawaii Department of Health Reports First Case Of Zika Virus In The U.S.

Just days after the Center for Disease Control recommended travel warnings to pregnant women headed to Latin America, the Hawaiian Department of Health has confirmed a Zika “virus infection in a baby recently born with microcephaly in a hospital on Oahu.”

The release stressed that this case wasn’t acquired in the United States: the mother was pregnant in Brazil in May 2015, when the virus was transmitted. Neither the infant or the mother are contagious.

“In this situation, an astute Hawaii physician recognized the possible role of Zika virus infection, immediately notified the Department of Health, and worked with us to confirm the suspected diagnosis,” said Dr. Park. “We rely on our exceptional medical community to be our eyes and ears in the field to control and prevent the spread of illness in Hawaii.”

This case helps to reinforce that there is some link between infants suffering from microcephaly and the Zika Virus. While there’s no chance of transmission from this case, the dramatic spread of the virus throughout Central Africa and Central America is worrisome.

Nobody Knows Who the Fourth American Released in Today's Prisoner Swap With Iran Is

In addition to Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian, former U.S. Marine Amir Hekmati, and pastor Saeed Abedini, Iran also announced the release today of Nosratollah Khosravi-Roodsari. Bafflingly, Khosravi-Roodsari’s imprisonment seems not to have been previously reported.

The Associated Press reports that Khosravi-Roodsari’s name “had not been previously made public.” In some reports, his name is spelled “Nosratollah Khosrawi-Roodsari.”

From the The Huffington Post:

Obama administration officials refused to offer any clues about Khosravi-Roodsari’s background, why he was in Iran, or why he had been imprisoned, citing privacy laws.

Khosravi-Roodsari’s name doesn’t appear in any news articles published before Saturday. He’s practically a ghost on public records searches—and phone listings tied to his name are disconnected. CNN’s Wolf Blitzer noted on air that he had no idea who the man was, despite covering the story for months.

U.S. officials said that Khosravi-Roodsari—has only been described as a “businessman”—was detained sometime in the past year, Robin Wright reports for the New Yorker. “The United States was not even aware that he had been detained until it received a diplomatic note about him from the Iranians during the negotiations.”

The Case of the So-Called Alien Megastructure Just Got Weirder

The Case of the So-Called Alien Megastructure Just Got Weirder

It’s probably not aliens. Seriously guys, it’s very, very unlikely that it’s aliens. But the weird, flickering star known as KIC 8462852 still isn’t sitting right with astronomers. In fact, it just got a lot weirder.

Ever since KIC 84628532 was spotted in the Kepler Space Telescope’s dataset, astronomers have puzzled over what the heck could be responsible for the star’s logic-defying light curve. Over four years of observational data, KIC 8462852 flickered erratically, its light output sometimes dropping by as much as 20%. That’s highly unusual stellar behavior, and it can’t be explained by a transiting planet.

Some astronomers proposed that KIC 8462852 might be occluded by a swarm of comets. Others suggested aliens.

Specifically, astronomer Jason Wright tossed out the idea that the star’s weird distortion might be the result of a giant alien construction project—you know, like a Dyson sphere. The idea electrified the citizens of Earth and mobilized a worldwide SETI search for hard evidence of our celestial neighbors. Sadly, two independent searches, for radio signals and laser beams—both of which could indicate a technological society—didn’t pan out. (And remember, we’ve confused inexplicable observations for aliens many, many times before.)

But according to a study just released arXiv, the comet hypothesis is now falling flat, too, and the mystery of KIC 8462852 has deepened considerably. While Kepler only has a few years of data on the star, astronomer Bradley Schaefer of Louisiana State University decided to look at photographic plates of the sky dating back to the late 19th century. To his amazement, he learned that over the last hundred years, KIC 8462852's light output has steadily faded by about 19%, something that’s “completely unprecedented for any F-type main sequence star.”

“This presents some trouble for the comet hypothesis,” Tabetha Boyajian, a lead researcher on the team that originally discovered the star, told New Scientist. “We need more data through continuous monitoring to figure out what is going on.”

Indeed, it’s hard to imagine either aliens or natural celestial bodies dampening a star’s light output that much over such a short period of time.

It’ll be a while yet before we’ve solved the mystery of KIC 8462852. But this is what’s great about scientific discovery. Literally all possible explanations are on the table at this point—and the truth about this tantalizing star could be more fascinating than we ever imagined.

Report: At Least 400 Syrian Civilians Kidnapped by ISIS During Attack on Eastern City

At least 400 civilians have been kidnapped from the Syrian city of Deir al-Zor by Islamic State militants, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Sunday. According to Reuters, the monitoring group reported that the families of pro-government fighters were among those taken.

The eastern city (and province of the same name) is of tactical significance to ISIS, linking Raqqa, its de facto capital, with its territory in Iraq. From Reuters:

Syria’s state news agency SANA said earlier that at least 300 people, including women and children, had been killed during the attacks in Deir al-Zor, but it made no mention of people getting kidnapped.

Syria’s government condemned the killings which it described as a “horrific massacre against the residents of Begayliya in Deir al-Zor”.

A source close to the Syrian government side said on Saturday that some of those killed had been beheaded.

ISIS said its fighters launched several suicide bombings against regime forces in the city, Agence France-Presse reports, and had gained control of the northern suburb of Al-Baghaliyeh.

The London-based SOHR reported that at least 85 civilians and 50 government troops were killed in the fighting. At least 16 jihadis were also killed. Syrian government forces were reportedly supported by Russian airstrikes.

The TiVo Roamio OTA is the TiVo box you know and love, but designed specifically for users of HDTV antennas. The box itself retails for $50, but it typically comes saddled with a $15 monthly service fee. While supplies last though, you can get the box plus lifetime (of the box, not of you) service for a single, upfront $300 fee. That’s a hefty investment, but it’ll pay for itself in 17 months compared to committing to a monthly fee.

Lifetime service for most TiVos costs an exorbitant $500, so you’re actually saving a ton of money by forgoing the cable card here. Unfortunately, they only seem to sell these boxes in limited quantities, so be sure to grab one before it sells out again. [TiVo Roamio OTA HD DVR with Product Lifetime Service, $300]

Update: Today’s your last chance!

In celebration of Mozart In The Jungle’s Golden Globes victories, Amazon has made a year of Prime $73 through the weekend for new members.

Need convincing? Here are all of the benefits you get with Prime, including free two day shipping, access to thousands of streaming TV shows and movies, and (as of earlier this week) 20% off all video game preorders and new releases. It really is the best deal in tech. [Amazon Prime]

The Mystery Prisoner Freed by Iran Didn't Get on the Plane With Other Americans

On Sunday, after a delay, Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian and two other Americans, released by Iran as part of a prisoner exchange deal, left Tehran on an airplane, the Post reports. The fourth American prisoner, whose detention seems not to have been reported before yesterday, did not join them.

Whether Nosratollah Khosravi-Roodsari, about whom practically nothing is known—he has only been described as a “businessman”—intended to remain in Iran, or was simply traveling separately, is unclear.

“We can confirm that our detained U.S. citizens have been released and that those who wished to depart Iran have left,” a senior administration official told the Post. (Reuters has a similar quote.)

“We have no further information to share at this time and would ask that everyone respect the privacy of these individuals and their families.”

Update – 12:10 pm

White House officials tell ABC’s Alex Mallin that they don’t know if Khosravi-Roodsari plans to leave Iran: “It’s his free determination where he wants to go.”

Taiwan Elects Tsai Ing-Wen As Their First Female President

Taiwan Elects Tsai Ing-Wen As Their First Female President

Tsai Ing-wen, the candidate leading the Taiwanese Democratic Progressive Party, has been elected as president of Taiwan. The U.S.-educated former law professor is the first woman to hold office.

According to CNN, Taiwan has been under the government of the pro-China Kuomintang (KMT), or Nationalist Party for the past eight years. Since the Democratic Progressive Party has traditionally been in favor of independence, the vote could anger China, which sees Taiwan as a part of its territory that could be taken by force if needed. Beijing has hundreds of missiles pointing at the island.

“My position will move past partisan politics,” Tsai said in her first conference with the media. “Following the will and consensus of the Taiwanese people, we will work to maintain the status quo for peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, in order to bring the greatest benefits and well-being to the Taiwanese people.” She added, “I also want to emphasize that both sides of the strait have a responsibility to find mutually acceptable means of interaction that are based on dignity and reciprocity. We must ensure that no provocations or accidents take place.”

Tsai has promised to bring new growth to Taiwan’s sluggish economy by diversifying trade relations and pledged to tackle youth unemployment, reports The Guardian.

“For me, this is not just about an election victory,” Tsai said. “The results today tell me that the people want to see a government more willing to listen to the people, a government that is more transparent and accountable, and a government that is more capable of leading us past our current challenges and taking care of those in need. They tell me that the people expect a government that can lead this country into a new generation and a government that is steadfast in protecting this country’s sovereignty.”

Oregon Militia Spokesman Says Foster Children Were Removed From His Home

Oregon militia spokesman Robert “LaVoy” Finicum told OPB that the four foster children who had been living with him and his wife on their Chino Valley, Arizona, ranch have been taken away. “I hope people are seeing the sacrifices we’re making here,” he said.

The rancher estimated that more than 50 boys, often coming from group homes, drug rehabs, and psychiatric institutions, have lived with them in the past decade. “My ranch has been a great tool for these boys,” Finicum said. “It has done a lot of good.”

(Last week, Finicum traveled between the Malheur Wildlife Refuge, in southeastern Oregon, and Utah, as part of a press tour. “We went fast, and came back fast,” he told OPB. “I doubt [law enforcement] even knew we were gone. Probably they did. But they were nice enough to let us go and come back.” Actually, police have said the occupiers are free to come and go as they please, which raises the question: Why do they need people to send them supplies, then?)

According to Finicum, his wife Jeanette was caring for the children while he was busy in Oregon. He said a social worker removed the first of them on January 4th, just a few days after the occupation began, and the last was removed on January 9th. He blamed “pressure from the feds,” who “must have gotten to the governor, who told the state to get them out of there.”

From OPB:

That represents an enormous loss of income for the Finicums. According to a 2010 tax filing, Catholic Charities paid the family $115,343 to foster children in 2009. That year, foster parents were compensated between $22.31 and $37.49 per child, per day, meaning if the Finicums were paid at the maximum rate, they cared for, on average, eight children per day in 2009.

“That was my main source of income,” Finicum said. “My ranch, well, the cows just cover the costs of the ranch. If this means rice and beans for the next few years, so be it. We’re going to stay the course.”

Since then, Catholic Charities has increased payments for foster care significantly, but it does not itemize the dollar amount the Finicums were paid in subsequent years.

Gawker could reach neither Catholic Charities nor the Department of Child Safety in Arizona for comment.

“I want to show what my government is doing. You need to understand the cost being paid by many people,” Finicum said.

Jeremy Corbyn Calls His Cat "El Gato," Which Is Spanish for "The Cat"

In an interview with the Independent on Sunday, Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the British Labour party, has explained that he calls his cat, “The Cat.” Actually, he calls it “El Gato.”

“It’s a black and white cat. I always call it ‘El Gato’, which is just Spanish for cat,” Corbyn said. “When I see the cat I say, ‘Buenos dias, El Gato’. Actually, cats don’t know their name, cats know voices.

Corbyn’s previous cat, the Sun reports, was named “Harold Wilson,” for the former Labour leader.

“What he does respond to, when I ask him to come in, is the tune of ‘Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree’. I whistle to it. I can’t sing, you see.”
