Hillary Clinton Is Also Trying to Figure Out What Donald Trump Has on Hostage Chris Christie

Hillary Clinton Is Also Trying to Figure Out What Donald Trump Has on Hostage Chris Christie

It’s always a pleasure to hear candidates talk shit about each other—all the more so when they don’t know everyone can hear them. This is true even when the conversation is only mildly rude, as it was between Hillary Clinton and Chris Matthews during a commercial break Monday, audio of which was obtained by the Washington Post.

“Why did [Chris Christie] support Trump?” Clinton wonders during the brief conversation, which also touched on Ben Carson’s speaking voice and Christie’s electability—or lack thereof. “Did he have a debt or something?”

It kind of seems that way!

The Metro Is Apparently So Dangerous No One Can Take It At All Tomorrow So Have a Good Evening Commute!

The Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) announced today it will shut down the District’s metro system tomorrow due to an “emergency investigation.” But everything will be just fine for commuters tonight, probably.

The problem—which is somehow both safe enough for commuters to travel on the Metro this evening, yet dangerous enough that the city is shutting its entire down for an entire day with just a few hours notice—is reportedly related to jumper cables.

WMATA’s general manager and CEO Paul J. Wiedefeld says he can’t promise the problem isn’t life-threatening—but on the bright side, he also can’t promise it is.

“While the risk to the public is very low, I cannot rule out a potential life safety issue here, and that is why we must take this action immediately,” Wiedefeld said.

No need to panic, I’m sure!!!!

Breitbart Is Sending Cease and Desist Letters to Ex-Employees

Breitbart, a.k.a. Donald Trump’s Xanga, recently saw an exodus of staffers, after the publication refused to defend Michelle Fields’ report that Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski grabbed and pulled her to the ground. Staffers resigned, calling the publication “Trump’s Pravda,” and an “unaffiliated media super PAC for the Trump campaign.”

Now, Breitbart has reportedly sent out cease and desist letters to several of the six employees who resigned this week, according to Politico, perhaps hoping that the public will forget about the monumental typhoon of shit with which it has continuously pummeled the internet.

Politico’s Hadas Gold writes:

Breitbart has gotten into legal battles with former employees in the past. Conservative radio host Dana Loesch sued the company in 2012, claiming that Breibart refused to let her work for the site or any other company. Loesch and Breitbart eventually settled. According to several sources, most Breitbart employees, though not all, are on contracts that likely include non-disparagement clauses.

The idea of Breitbart attempting to stop the relatively measured criticism from its former employees is like trying to stop a ship from sinking with a lone water wing.

One Killed in Shootout with Belgian and French Police During Brussels Anti-Terror Raid

On Tuesday, Belgian and French police stormed a house in Brussels while after being fired upon while investigating a link to the November attacks in Paris. According to the Associated Press, they killed one suspect, who was armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle.

Three Belgian and one French police officer were slightly wounded. One was wounded on his ear, the other when his own weapon was hit by one of the suspect’s bullets. “We had a lot of luck,” Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said. “It could have been a drama.”

The Belgian prosecutor’s office issued a statement, Agence France-Presse reports:

“In this operation, one or several people opened fire on the police as they came through the door... (and) one suspect armed with a Kalashnikov type assault rifle was killed,” a statement said.

The identity of this person “is being established,” it said.

There had been speculation that Salah Abdeslam, a key suspect in the November attacks in Paris which left 130 people dead, might have been the target of the operation but the prosecutor’s spokesman expressly ruled it out.

“The investigation is being actively pursued, night and day and it is not possible to give further details at this stage so as not to hinder enquiries,” the statement continued.

The New York Times Had an Awful Lot of Second Thoughts About Its Story on Bernie Sanders' Legislative Record

The New York Times Had an Awful Lot of Second Thoughts About Its Story on Bernie Sanders' Legislative Record
Photo: AP

The New York Times has quietly (and extensively) revised a history of Senator Bernie Sanders’ legislative accomplishments, initially published on Monday morning under the glowing headline, “Bernie Sanders Scored Victories for Years via Legislative Side Door,” which eventually became the far more reserved “Via Legislative Side Doors, Bernie Sanders Won Modest Victories” and, in print, the even more ambivalent “Sanders’s Roster of Modest Wins.”

The revisions were first noted by Medium blogger The Broken Ravioli [emphasis theirs]:

Written by congressional reporter Jennifer Steinhauer, the article reflects on the Senator’s strategy for legislative accomplishments over the past 25 years — often passing new measures by attaching them to larger bills.

By Monday afternoon — once many people, including Sanders himself, had already shared the article widely on social media and other sites — the Times evidently rewrote rather significant portions of the article. (No mention has been made anywhere that the article was retroactively altered.) Several new paragraphs were injected, while other wording was subtly changed to shift the praiseful tone of the article to one of shrugging ambivalence toward Sanders’s accomplishments.

“The good part about digital publishing is that we get more things to our readers more quickly but it also means that complete editing sometimes comes ends at the end of the day,” Steinhauer explained to Rolling Stone’s Matt Taibbi. “Two or more versions are now pretty common with all our work, as you probably know.”

But, as Taibbi points out, the revisions the Times made substantially change the meaning of the piece. (Haha, also: “I took notice of the piece by Jessica Steinhauer because I wrote essentially the same article nearly 11 years ago. Mine, called ‘Four Amendments and a Funeral,’ was a Rolling Stone feature.”)

Some of the changes are subtle, but significant, like the shift in this turn of phrase, early in the piece:

The New York Times Had an Awful Lot of Second Thoughts About Its Story on Bernie Sanders' Legislative Record
Via NewsDiffs

Others are much more substantial, like the addition of a line about Sanders enacting his agenda “piece by piece, in politically digestible chunks with few sweeping legislative achievements in a quarter-century in Congress” and the excision of a laudatory quote (“It has been a very successful strategy”) from Sanders policy advisor Warren Gunnels. Now, that quote has been replaced with two completely incoherent sentences:

But in his presidential campaign Mr. Sanders is trying to scale up those kinds of proposals as a national agenda, and there is little to draw from his small-ball legislative approach to suggest that he could succeed.

Mr. Sanders is suddenly promising not just a few stars here and there, but the moon and a good part of the sun, from free college tuition paid for with giant tax hikes to a huge increase in government health care, which has made even liberal Democrats skeptical.

What does that mean? And why is it so terribly written? It is not clear. Indeed, many of the cuts would seem to deprive the reader of (helpful, if not necessary) context:

The New York Times Had an Awful Lot of Second Thoughts About Its Story on Bernie Sanders' Legislative Record
Via NewsDiffs

And then, towards the end of the piece:

The New York Times Had an Awful Lot of Second Thoughts About Its Story on Bernie Sanders' Legislative Record
Via NewsDiffs

Hmm. So the Times has rendered what was an illuminating and informative, if somewhat begrudging, story about Bernie Sanders into an aggravatingly confusing story about a senator who (maybe intentionally??) torpedoed Democratic legislation, just like—hint hint, nudge nudge—the Tea Party. Why in the world would the paper of record do something like that?

Donald Trump Takes Florida, Humiliates Marco Rubio

Donald Trump Takes Florida, Humiliates Marco Rubio

With over half of the state reporting, networks are officially calling Florida for Donald Trump. And Rubio didn’t just lose in his home state—he lost by a lot.

http://gawker.com/marco-rubio-su...

Rubio’s been promising all day to stay in the race even if Florida goes to Trump, which already seemed like an ill-advised prospect. But seeing how soundly Trump took the state (especially considering how many candidates are still on the ballot), Rubio would have to be insane to stay in at this point.

Donald Trump Takes Florida, Humiliates Marco Rubio

Fortunately for whatever dignity Rubio has left, he has apparently given up on that dream, suspending his campaign as Rubio just announced in his concession speech, he’s finally letting go of his Presidential dreams.

Making it all worse is the fact that Florida theoretically should have been a shoe-in for Rubio. Unfortunately for Rubio, it looks like his voters aren’t crazy about the fact that he never showed up to work (Rubio boasted the highest absentee rate of any senator running for President).

And if his own prophecy of just a few days ago comes true, Trump just sealed the deal.

Either way, a deeply embarrassing way to end a campaign, and the perfect end to Trump’s months-long Rubio burn session.

Hillary Clinton Projected to Win Florida and North Carolina

Hillary Clinton Projected to Win Florida and North Carolina

Hillary Clinton is projected to win the Florida Democratic primary, according to the New York Times. Meanwhile, NBC News has called North Carolina for Clinton.

From the Times:

Mrs. Clinton was expected to do well in the Sunshine State, capitalizing on its older population and large numbers of minority voters. Mr. Sanders continues to do well with younger, white voters but has struggled to broaden his base.

The victory by Mrs. Clinton adds to the challenge that Senator Bernie Sanders will face as he tries to overtake her for the Democratic nomination.

There are 214 delegates at stake for the Democrats in Florida, which will be distributed proportionally. So too will North Carolina’s 121 delegates.

Marco Rubio Suspends His Campaign (Finally)

0
0

After getting soundly trounced by Trump in his home state, Marco Rubio finally took his campaign out back and put it out of his misery. Which means he should be endorsing Donald Trump by—oh, let’s say Friday.

http://gawker.com/donald-trump-t...

Rubio gave a pretty ambulatory speech as far as concession speeches go, taking over fifteen minutes to say what amounted to, “Whoops.” You can watch a portion of it above, but even that isn’t easy to stomach.

Good luck to Senator Rubio. Maybe now you’ll finally start showing up to work.

Hillary Clinton Projected to Win Democratic Primary in Ohio

The Associated Press and NBC News are projecting Hillary Clinton to win Ohio.

Clinton was expected to win Ohio, but after Sanders surprised the former secretary of state in Michigan, the democratic socialist said that he expected to pull out another upset win in the Buckeye State.

There are 143 Democratic delegates, distributed proportionally, up for grabs in Ohio. This, in combination with Clinton’s wins in Florida and North Carolina tonight, may very well put the Sanders’ campaign to bed.

John Kasich(?) Wins(?) Ohio

John Kasich(?) Wins(?) Ohio

John Kasich just took Ohio—his first and only state win so far. And fortunately for him, Ohio also just so happens to be a winner-take-all state. It’s just too bad it’s nearly impossible for him to win at this point.

Which, to his campaign’s credit, they seem totally fine with. As John Weaver, Kasich’s chief campaign strategist (who previously lost both the 2000 and 2008 elections for John McCain) told Reuters, “The plan is to win Ohio, and some other states, and if that happens, nobody is going to have enough delegates to win the nomination on the first ballot.”

The plan is to win Ohio, and some other states. Well, they’ve definitely got the first one down.

John Kasich(?) Wins(?) Ohio

Watch out Some Other States. Kasich’s comin’ for ya. Eventually.

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough Tells Hillary Clinton to Smile More

Morning Joe co-host Joe Scarborough has a helpful little message for former Secretary of State and current presidential candidate Hillary Clinton: Smile, babe!

Hey, Joe? Fuck off 🙂.

A big night for Donald Trump, who just won both the Illinois and North Carolina Republican primaries.

The Illinois win comes just days after Trump fired his state campaign director for failing to get out the vote.

According to the New York Times, Trump currently holds about 40 percent of the vote in both states. Ted Cruz, whose only win tonight came when Marco Rubio dropped out, isn’t far behind in North Carolina, trailing with about 36 percent of the vote.

Guess this guy’s really a contender now...

According to exit polls conducted by the Associated Press and Edison Research, about two-thirds of Republican primary voters on Tuesday support Donald Trump’s proposal to temporarily ban Muslim tourists and immigrants from entering the United States.

In Missouri, as many as three-quarters of the Republican voters supported the ban. On the other hand, only about 4 in 10 Republican voters in the five states that held primaries on Tuesday wanted immigrants in the country illegally to be deported.

About 9 in 10 GOP primary voters on Tuesday said they are unhappy with the federal government, the AP reports, and majorities in all five states said they felt betrayed by Republican politicians.

Tuesday was a good night for the Trump family. Donald won the Florida Republican primary. And his brother Robert had tickets to tonight’s Billy Joel show at Madison Square Garden.

Gawker tipster Cameron G spotted Robert Trump, Donald’s (slightly) younger brother, at a Manhattan establishment described by Google as a “bare-bones Irish bar.”

Cameron writes:

This may not be the most groundbreaking news ever, but I was in a dive bar tonight in Murray Hill called Desmond’s Tavern when a party bus rolled up outside, and its occupants pored in and insisted the bar start blasting Billy Joel. The large and obnoxious crowd started pounding martinis and chicken wings, then started inexplicably (so it seemed) cheering the televised election returns reporting Trump’s large lead in Florida.

This all seemed very perplexing until one of the group leaders revealed himself to be Donald’s not-so-well-known brother Robert, who along with his friends (?) was on the way to tonight’s Billy Joel concert.

Aside from the raucous Trump cheering they were pretty orderly, save for some of the crew who attempted to smuggle their drinks out in solo cups to the party bus.

According to Cameron, Trump’s wife paid the tab, and “left an adequate tip.”

Anita Alvarez, State's Attorney Who Lagged On Charging Laquan McDonald's Killer, Ousted By Opponent Kim Foxx

Anita Alvarez, State's Attorney Who Lagged On Charging Laquan McDonald's Killer, Ousted By Opponent Kim Foxx

Anita Alvarez—the State’s Attorney for Cook County, Illinois who has grown nationally famous for her reluctance to charge 68 police officers involved in fatal shootings—has lost her race to keep her job tonight to Kim Foxx, an opponent from Cabrini Green whose express goal was to “bring back integrity to our criminal justice system” in the name of reform and accountability.

Alvarez is best known for waiting over a full year to bring charges against Jason Van Dyke in the 2014 shooting of Laquan McDonald, and then only after Mayor Rahm Emmanuel was racked with protests. Black Lives Matter activists organized for Alvarez’s ouster, too, and her loss was something like a referendum, earning only 29% of the vote in comparison to Foxx’s 57.5%.

Tuesday night, the Chicago Tribune’s Jeff Coen at first tweeted that Alvarez was soon to address her supporters in a concession speech, but later suggested that appearance was up in the air:

Last week, Cook County State’s Attorney-elect Kim Foxx told the Chicago Reader her plans for the position:

“You cannot look at the criminal justice system in a vacuum. We need a broader and more holistic view of how we prevent crime and how we keep communities safer,” a view to which the state’s attorney must be held accountable, she says. “The public has to hold feet to the fire on these issues. And Anita Alvarez’s feet have not been held to the fire.”

Update, 11:20 PM: Buzzfeed News reports that the activist group Assata’s Daughters has released a statement on the win:

Chicago Black youth kicked Anita Alvarez out of office. Just a month ago, Anita Alvarez was winning in the polls. Communities who refused to be killed and jailed and abused without any chance at justice refused to allow that to happen. We did this for Rekia. We did this for Laquan. We won’t stop until we’re free and Kim Foxx should know that well.

Donald Trump Is a Theoretical Physicist and His Theory Is That Physics Is Polls

Donald Trump just ended his mercifully short victory speech, the majority of which consisted of Trumpisms we’ve already heard a million times before—except for one. Now (in addition to Muslims and walls and his smokin’ hot daughter), Donald Trump would like to talk to you about physics.

http://gawker.com/donald-trump-t...

Unfortunately for MIT, Caltech, and every other physics school in the country, they’ve been teaching a lie. Because apparently, physics isn’t about matter and space and time—it’s about cold, hard election polls:

I was watching the news a little while ago, and one of the commentators said, “But Donald Trump doesn’t get over 50 percent.” ... And I have to explain to these people... They don’t understand basic physics, basic mathematics, basic—whatever you want to call it.

When I don’t get over 50, we have four people—right? We have four people. Do you understand that? So when I get 53... and that’s with four people. That’s an amazing achievement, just mathematically, when you can get over 50 percent.

So not only was this a deeply embarrassing night for Marco Rubio, but physicists everywhere are now legally obligated to set fire to their degrees in deference to Professor Trump. It’s just basic whatever you want to call it. Sad!

Tonight's Real Winner Is Jeb Bush

Former candidate for President and current sad man Jeb Bush doesn’t have to be sad tonight. Because even though his mother may always love George just a little bit more, Jeb still somehow managed to pull in two percent of Florida voters. Truly a great night for Jeb.

http://gawker.com/donald-trump-t...

Part of the reason that roughly 43,000 people threw away their vote on Jeb (no offense) is that Florida prints its ballots in advance, meaning that voters are inevitably presented with some candidates that aren’t actually candidates any more. The other reason is that, tonight, Jeb Bush almost definitely voted for Jeb Bush.

Still, we’d like to extend a hearty congratulations to Jebs everywhere. Jebs—it’s your night.

A reporter for Politico, Ben Schreckinger, was denied entry to Donald Trump’s Tuesday night press conference at Mar-a-Lago, despite previously having been granted credentials. Earlier in the day, Schreckinger reported that Trump staffers had tried to get campaign manager Corey Lewandowski fired.

http://gawker.com/trump-staffers...

According to Politico, Schreckinger, who has covered the Trump campaign for the past six months, was issued credentials for the press conference via email on Tuesday morning—ten minutes later, those credentials were revoked. When he arrived at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday night, he was denied entry and escorted off the property.

As he spoke to supporters at the club, Trump gestured to the back of the room, referring to “disgusting reporters.” Lewandowski, who is accused of assaulting a former Breitbart reporter, Michelle Fields, laughed. Later, Trump told his campaign manager he was doing a “good job.”

Previously, the Trump campaign has approved media credentials for a pro-slavery white nationalist.
