Man Who Called 911 on Walmart Shopper Won't Be Charged in Fatal Police Shooting

The man who called 911 to report that John Crawford III was walking through the aisles of a Beavercreek, Ohio Wal-Mart with a gun will not be charged in connection with Crawford’s death at the hands of responding officers, according to a report from the Associated Press. Crawford turned out to be holding a BB gun.

An obscure law allowed ten people to file affidavits to the municipal court as private citizens against Ronald Ritchie at the end of March, alleging that Ritchie “created the incident that resulted in the death of not only John Crawford but another shopper by the name of Angela Williams.” Williams, 37, had a heart attack while fleeing the scene with her daughter after hearing gunshots. She died later that same night.

The affidavits were reviewed by a Fairborn municipal court judge who determined that the evidence, including a surveillance video synced to a recording of the 9-11 call, was sufficient for review by a prosecutor. One of the complainants, a local activist named Bomani Moyenda, alleged that the store surveillance video showed Crawford’s actions were not consistent with what Ritchie told police on the 9-11 call.

Mark Piepmeier, the same prosecutor who presented evidence to the grand jury that declined to hand down indictments for the officers who killed Crawford, was the one who reviewed the affidavits against Ritchie. Unsurprisingly, he decided not to charge Ritchie.

“I don’t find any evidence that Mr. Ritchie knew any of the information he was providing was false,” Piepmeier wrote in his decision [...] The original 911 call from Mr. Ritchie was basically, ‘I’m at the Beavercreek Walmart and there is a man walking around with a gun in the store.’ The remainder of his conversation was mostly answers in response to questions from the dispatcher.”

Michael Wright, the lawyer representing Crawford’s family in a wrongful death civil suit against the city of Beavercreek and Wal-Mart, said he did not expect Ritchie to be charged. “There’s an understanding people make bad calls to 911. It’s up to the police to assess the situation. That still should not have led to the death of John Crawford,” he said.

Uruguay Opens First State-Owned and Operated Weed Dispensary

Uruguay is set to pioneer the world’s first state owned and operated marijuana dispensaries, The Guardian reports. Starting in July, Uruguayans—who enjoy a socially liberal government—can now legally access up to forty grams of pot a month, at a cost of no more than $1 a gram. To do this, all the government requires is that users put their name and fingerprints in a government database.

Marijuana was legalized in Uruguay in 2013 by then-President Jose Mujica. Mujica gained international notoriety for his leftist beliefs, extremely frugal lifestyle which included donating 90% of his salary to charity. His administration’s campaign to legalize marijuana and invest in dispensaries resulted in cheap and plentiful cannabis, part of a deliberate effort to curb the influence of cartels bringing drugs into the region across the border from Paraguay.

Only two dispensaries have been approved so far, but the new laws permit anyone over 18 to grow their own.

Meanwhile, in America, a 79-year-old veteran serving a life sentence for growing three dozen marijuana plants in his backyard was denied an appeal today.

Obama Stands Alone As 9/11 Families Demand Justice

New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio is the latest in a string of high profile politicians to express support for a bill allowing family members of 9/11 victims to sue Saudi Arabia in U.S. courts, the Daily News reports. President Obama is scheduled to visit the country, which is deep in turmoil over falling oil prices and the encroaching militant threat of ISIS, on Wednesday. The hope is that the talks will smooth over troubled relations between the two nations.

Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have also come out for the bill. Along with Senator Chuck Schumer, Clinton pressured President Obama to “take a hard look” at declassifying the twenty-eight pages of the 9/11 Commission Report which are thought to shed light on Saudi complicity. The Saudi government has threatened economic consequences should the bill pass.

Meanwhile, Obama’s deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes fanned the flames when he admitted earlier today on a podcast to David Axelrod that “a lot of the money, the seed money if you will, for what became Al Qaeda, came out of Saudi Arabia.” Rhodes did not accuse Saudi Arabia of intentionally funding terrorists, but admitted that it was “complicated.”

First Attack in Taliban Spring Offensive Leaves At Least 28 Dead and Hundreds Wounded in Kabul

First Attack in Taliban Spring Offensive Leaves At Least 28 Dead and Hundreds Wounded in Kabul

A week after the Taliban announced its annual spring offensive, armed militants launched an assault, involving a suicide car bombing and a gun attack, against a government security agency in Kabul. At least 28 people have been killed and more than 320 wounded, NPR reports, the Taliban claimed responsibility.

On its Pashto-language website, the Taliban said that it had targeted “Department 10,” a unit of the National Directorate of Security, which protects government ministers and VIPs. From Reuters:

They said a suicide car bomber blew up the main gate at the front of the office, allowing other fighters, including more suicide bombers, to enter the heavily guarded compound.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a separate statement that the attackers were engaged in a gunbattle with Afghan security forces inside the building.

It was not immediately possible to verify the details of the Taliban’s claim with government officials. The Islamist group often exaggerates details of attacks against government and military targets.

The militants struck around 9 o’clock in the morning, NPR’s Philip Reeves reports, in the midst of rush hour. The initial blast could be heard around the city. “It was followed by the sound of a prolonged gun fight. Ambulance sirens intermittently echoed through the streets for hours afterwards,” Reeves said.

According to the Wall Street Journal, this is the deadliest attack in Kabul since August, when three separate bombings left more than 50 people (including one U.S. service member) dead.

Security has deteriorated in the city over the past year, with U.S. security officials in Afghanistan recording more than 60 bombings in the latter half of 2015 and an increase in the use of truck bombs.

In December, one such attack targeted compounds used by U.S. government contractors, flattening security walls and buildings and leaving a 49-foot crater. Two people were killed and close to 40 were wounded.

“Threat of attack has already turned this capital into a cluster of forts, wrapped up in razor wire and concrete blast barriers, patrolled by a multitude of hard-faced men with guns. These days, when they cross town, senior Afghan and international officials often use helicopters as taxis, rather than run the risk of being shot or bombed while sitting in a traffic jam,” Reeves said. “It’s hard to know how you make this place any more secure.”

Watch John Kasich, the Reasonable One, Get Very Testy With a Reporter for Doing His Job

0
0

When he’s flanked by a man who kisses his pocket constitution after bedtime soup every night and a racist talking steak, John Kasich enjoys the appearance of being the normal guy of this year’s Republican primary race. As Kasich tells reporters in the video above, he is the candidate “who can actually win in the fall.”

http://gawker.com/reminder-john-...

But don’t let his outlandish competitors fool you. John Kasich is not a reasonable guy. He gutted education in Ohio; he seems to hate women; he once declared an official gubernatorial resolution for the sole purpose of ragging on LeBron James. He has a nasty temper, as evidenced by the time he threatened to blacklist the Grateful Dead for not letting him backstage, the time he publicly castigated a journalist who was profiling him, or the time he used a public forum to call a cop who (rightfully) pulled him over three years earlier an idiot.

Kasich’s temper reared its head again when a reporter asked the Ohio governor about his unlikely path to victory at an event yesterday. “Can I finish?” Kasich asked when the reporter asked a follow-up. “I’m answering the question the way I want to answer it.” He briefly took the reporter’s voice recorder from him and began speaking directly into it. And then, perhaps remembering that people were watching and he had a reputation to uphold, he gave it back.

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder Says He's Going to Drink Flint Water For the Next Month

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder Says He's Going to Drink Flint Water For the Next Month
Photo: AP

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, whose approval ratings evaporated over the Flint water crisis, this week pledged to drink filtered Flint water for the next month.

Snyder says it’s only fair, since he’s been urging Flint residents to switch from bottled to filtered water. So he’ll actually be drinking clean water, and not the lead-tainted water his constituents drank, cooked and bathed with for months. Still—great optics.

“I completely understand why some Flint residents are hesitant to drink the water and I am hopeful I can alleviate some of the skepticism and mistrust by putting words to action,” Snyder told reporters. “Flint residents made it clear that they would like to see me personally drink the water, so today I am fulfilling that request. And I will continue drinking Flint water at work and at home for at least 30 days.”

A nice gesture, but one that still doesn’t negate the fact that he chose and paid for this cake.

http://gizmodo.com/amazon-echo-re...

In addition to being a pretty solid Bluetooth speaker, the Echo can check the weather, turn on your lights, read you the news, trigger custom IFTTT recipes, and even order food. Hell, even if you already own one, you might want to use this opportunity to add them to your other rooms.

Shark Lift-Away Professional Steam Mop, $80

When it comes to cleaning hard floors, you’ve basically got three options to choose from, if you don’t want to get down on your hands and knees:

  • A regular old mop, which can leave your floors wet for hours.
  • A Swiffer WetJet, or any similar product that uses chemical spray that can leave a residue, and disposable (i.e. expensive) cleaning pads.
  • A steam mop, which cleans using regular old water that dries within seconds.

Now, I’ll let you draw your own conclusions, but the choice seems rather obvious to me, especially when you can get a highly rated Shark Lift-Away Professional steam mop for just $80. That’s $43 less than Amazon (where it has a 4.3 star review average), and the best price we’ve ever seen. These Shitty Memes Are More Embarrassing Than Anything Nest Has Done
Image: Recode

Earlier today, Recode obtained some exclusive memes that offered insight into how Google’s employees really feel about Nest’s many, many problems. But while these disgruntled tech workers are busy lamenting the damage Nest has done to the Google name, they’re hurting themselves—and everyone they’ve ever loved—far more severely. With their embarrassing, shitty-ass memes.

Putting aside that the whiny Googlers in question appear to have forgotten where they work (a company notorious for buying brands, sucking up talent, and shutting down the dregs), theses memes are, perhaps, the most atrocious memes I have ever seen.

These Shitty Memes Are More Embarrassing Than Anything Nest Has Done
Image: Recode

You see, in the image above, Nest is represented as the vehicle railing through the lines of cars. Cars that symbolize “Alphabet goodwill.” You see, it’s funny because Nest ruined all the goodwill. Just like it ruined the cars. Do you understand? Do you see what Google has done? I’m weeping blood.

People are mad about Nest, sure. But considering the irrevocable damage done to Google by these uninspired, unfunny, and otherwise aesthetically offensive memes, the employees who made them should be turning that accusatory finger around. For the monster here is not in Nest, but in themselves.

You can see the rest of the bad memes at Recode.

Mayor, Comptroller Call for Audit of Elections Board Amid Widespread Voting Problems in NYC

Mayor, Comptroller Call for Audit of Elections Board Amid Widespread Voting Problems in NYC

Closed polling stations, malfunctioning ballot scanners, the mysterious disappearance of some 50,000 registered Democrats: These are just some of the “irregularities” reported by New York City residents trying to vote today.

http://gawker.com/lets-hear-your...

Fortunately, top officials have now promised to reform the city’s famously dysfunctional Board of Elections. Unfortunately, for thousands of voters hoping to participate in New York’s crucial closed primary, those reforms might be coming one election too late.

In response to today’s utter shitshow of a primary election, New York City comptroller Scott Stringer announced Tuesday evening that his office will be conducting an audit of the city’s Board of Elections, specifically citing the agency’s “incompetence.” From the New York Times:

Mr. Stringer said in a statement that the Board of Elections had confirmed that more than 125,000 Democratic voters in Brooklyn were removed from voter rolls between November 2015 and this month. The decline, reported by WNYC, occurred “without any adequate explanation furnished by the Board of Elections,” Mr. Stringer said.

“There is nothing more sacred in our nation than the right to vote, yet election after election, reports come in of people who were inexplicably purged from the polls, told to vote at the wrong location or unable to get in to their polling site,” Mr. Stringer said.

Shortly afterward, Mayor Bill de Blasio issued a press release supporting the audit and further pledging to hold election officials responsible for ensuring that “voters are not disenfranchised.”

“These errors today indicate that additional major reforms will be needed to the Board of Election and in the state law governing it,” said de Blasio in a statement. “The perception that numerous voters may have been disenfranchised undermines the integrity of the entire electoral process and must be fixed.”

Earlier today, the mayor’s Twitter account claimed there’s “nothing more punk rock” than voting. Given how difficult it has been for many New Yorkers, he just might be right.

New York Daily News Editor Fired For Making It Seem Like Shaun King Was a Plagiarist

It seemed as though today would be the day that disgraced Black Lives Matter activist-turned-provocateur columnist Shaun King would be caught in exactly the kind of lie for which, after a series of highly public controversies, the internet still seemed eager to nail him. Justin Miller, an editor at The Daily Beast, tweeted at 2:34 p.m. that King had plagiarized his Tuesday broadside from a story written by The Daily Beast’s Kate Briquelet.

The evidence seemed damning. Briquelet’s story—about a black Oklahoman named Elliott Williams who was left to die while paralyzed in a Tulsa prison cell over the course of five days—includes the following passage:

When Williams arrived to the county jail’s booking area in the early morning of Oct. 22, Owasso officer Jack Wells slammed him to the floor while trying to handcuff him, according to the cop’s own interview with OSBI. Officer Wells told OSBI he “landed on top of Elliott’s shoulder and head,” but that the prisoner “appeared to be fine with no injuries.”

Still, the Tulsa sheriff office’s appeared to disagree. In an internal report, the sheriff’s department says Williams struggled after the fall, and that his condition was captured on booking cameras. “At this time it is obvious that Williams is having a difficult time standing,” the document stated.

In King’s column, those two paragraphs appeared in identical form:

When Williams arrived to the county jail’s booking area in the early morning of Oct. 22, Owasso officer Jack Wells slammed him to the floor while trying to handcuff him, according to the cop’s own interview with OSBI. Officer Wells told OSBI he “landed on top of Williams’ shoulder and head,” but that the prisoner ‘appeared to be fine with no injuries.’

“Still, the Tulsa sheriff office’s appeared to disagree. In an internal report, the sheriff’s department says Williams struggled after the fall, and that his condition was captured on booking cameras. ‘At this time it is obvious that Williams is having a difficult time standing,’ the document stated.

The evidence seemed to speak for itself, but King immediately defended himself to CNN’s Dylan Byers:

Of course, every instance of plagiarism is a direct quote, but quotes are attributed and plagiarism is not. In King’s column, his quotation of Briquelet was not attributed, which would make it plagiarism.

Thirty minutes later, Alex Griswold, a Mediate reporter, tweeted that King had apparently swiped a paragraph from a FiveThirtyEight article “without attribution” in an article published last week:

But the screenshot (on the right) of King’s piece features a link directly before the paragraph in question, which takes you to the FiveThirtyEight article. If Shaun King was a serial plagiarist, why was he linking to his source material in one article but not in another?

The answer: malpractice on the part of his editor. In his own defense, King forwarded a timestamped draft of his Elliott Williams article to several media reporters. That draft showed clear attribution of Briquelet:

CNN’s Byers claimed he had also seen the draft of the story that apparently ripped off FiveThirtyEight and it, too, was clear in its attribution:

Less than an hour later, Byers reported that the Daily News was supporting King’s explanation that an editor at the Daily News had garbled his properly cited columns, in the process putting apparent plagiarism out into the world under King’s byline.

An hour later, Byers reported that the Daily News had fired the then-unnamed editor.

In a later statement, the Daily News announced that one of its editors, whom Byers later revealed to be Jotham Sederstrom (who, full disclosure, is married to Gawker founding editor Elizabeth Spiers), had “made a series of egregious and inexplicable errors” in which the editor “deleted attribution that made it appear passages from Shaun King’s columns were not properly credited.”

And thus the tale of how “Shaun King, the plagiarist” became the tale of “Unnamed Daily News Editor, the person who either maliciously or accidentally stripped block quotes from a drafted column which made them appear as if they were plagiarized.”

But the Daily News backing King doesn’t necessarily mean King will be able to shed the label of plagiarist. Speaking to Byers, Daily Beast executive editor Noah Shachtman in no way absolved King of blame in the matter:

“The Daily News says this was editor’s error, but either way the result is the same,” executive editor Noah Shachtman told CNNMoney. “In journalism we’re not judged by our rough copy, we’re judged by what we put on the web, what we put on the page.”

It is harsh of Shachtman to judge King by his editor’s error, but the quote is emblematic of the trust that King has lost with his peers—in both the activist and journalism worlds—if not also his readers. King was once known best as a champion for the rights of black men and women who died at the hands of police officers, but several highly public controversies have sapped of him the goodwill he accrued in that valuable role. He’s now similarly distrusted by activists and the bigots who seek to tear them down, and Shachtman seems to be making implied use of that distrust, even if it has no direct bearing on whether King plagiarized.

Is Shaun King black? Probably. Is Shaun King loose with money? Possibly. Is Shaun King a plagiarist? Probably not.

Correction: This post initially misspelled the name of Daily Beast executive editor Noah Shachtman. It has been corrected and updated with his full job title.

Upon the closing of polls in New York tonight, Donald Trump was declared the victor in the state’s primary by several news outlets including the AP and NBC.

As of this moment it appears that it will be a decisive victory. CNN is projecting that Ted Cruz will take home zero delegates tonight, which would leave the state’s 95 delegates to be sorted between Trump and John Kasich. Per FiveThirtyEight, Trump would take home 14 delegates if he wins at least 50 percent of the total vote. The other 81 delegates will be portioned out by district, and though a second-place Kasich could conceivably nab a couple, tonight is shaping up to be a gluttonous one for Trump.

The Washington Post’s Dave Weigel notes if Trump does indeed get over 50 percent, as he’s currently projected, it would be the first state in which he scored a majority. Trump would also be the first Republican candidate to crack 50 percent in his home state.

After nearly a month of losses, Hillary Clinton can finally claim another victory, this time in her home state of New York.

Hillary Clinton Just Won New York

The final tally put Hillary Clinton with a projected 60 percent of the vote while Bernie Sanders got a mere 35 percent. And according to (the questionably reliable) exit polls, Hillary’s victory came in a large part from New York’s more senior residents.

Sanders needed to snag a good portion of New York’s 247 delegates to keep up the pretense that he might have a shot, so the impending loss doesn’t bode well for the future the Sanders campaign. Now, Hillary Clinton’s total delegate count comes in at 1,859 and Bernie’s at 1,164, according to MSNBC.

The democratic candidate will ultimately need 2,383 to win the nomination. In other words, Bernie’s run is about to start winding down.

Who Will Be the Republican King of Williamsburg?

Donald Trump is already projected to win the state of New York—but who cares about that? The Democratic residents of Williamsburg certainly don’t. But among in that liberal wasteland, the battle to be crowned the GOP king by dozens-ish of conservative hipsters still rages on.

Who will win Williamsburg’s overpriced conservative hurt? We’ll be updating you all night long until we either find out or go mercifully unconscious. Whichever comes first.

Cruz was winning Williamsburg’s hearts for the majority of the night, but it looks like Trump is pulling ahead in both East Williamsburg and Williamsburg proper.

Who Will Be the Republican King of Williamsburg?
Who Will Be the Republican King of Williamsburg?

It’s still anyone’s game (maybe). Stay tuned.

Update 10:07 p.m.

Cruz seems to have secured South Williamsburg, which boasts a relatively large Cruz-friendly (but still hip!) Hasidic population.

Who Will Be the Republican King of Williamsburg?

But is that enough to win him the bicycle chain and bespoke juice container crown? Only time will tell.

Update 11:30 p.m.

The battle for Williamsburg proper is heating up, with Trump and Kasich just two votes apart.

Who Will Be the Republican King of Williamsburg?

There’s still four precincts left to go, though, so it’s still anyone’s game. And if you’re one of the unlikely Trump or Kasich voters centered in Williamsburg proper, let us know in the comments down below. We’ve got questions.

Donald Trump Promises to Build Big, Bad Military "Nobody Will Mess With"

Along with his usual pledges to humiliate his opponents and (once again) make America great, GOP frontrunner and tough eighth grader Donald Trump used his victory speech in New York tonight to announce something new: a Global War on Getting Messed With.

http://gawker.com/donald-trump-e...

“We’re going to build our military bigger, better, stronger than ever before,” said Trump on Tuesday. “Nobody is going to mess with us—that I can tell you.”

The United States’ defense budget, it should be noted, currently constitutes more than a third of all military spending on the planet Earth. That money, it should also be noted, has strangely failed to keep our country un-messed with.

Hillary Clinton After New York Win: "Victory Is in Sight"

An ecstatic Hillary Clinton took to the stage tonight after scoring a major victory in her home state. And judging by her victory speech, the former Secretary of State finally feels comfortable publicly declaring that her nomination is as good as cinched.

Hillary spoke in terms that more or less totally discounted the possibility of a loss, assuring Bernie supporters that “there is much more that unites us than divides us.” And to prove it, she spent the majority of the speech looking hard towards the general election, at one point growling the names Trump and Cruz as the crowd booed on command.

It was certainly one of Clinton’s livelier primary night speeches thus far, despite the continued absence of a certain beloved sticker enthusiast. And then, of course, there was this.

Which, while an odd choice of words, is still infinitely wiser than what Ted Cruz decided to go with earlier tonight.

I would apologize for any visuals and ensuing nightmares you might suffer from the Vine above, but I’m not sorry. We probably deserve this.

Fidel Castro: Goodbye Earth, Communism Forever

Old communists never die; they just introduce incremental change while slating major political reform for the unspecified future.

In a rare speech the Miami Herald characterized as a “farewell,” former Cuban president Fidel Castro directly addressed his health and mortality on Tuesday, noting that, at 90 years old, he would soon be “like all the others.”

“The time will come for all of us,” Castro told Cuba’s Communist Party, according to The Guardian, “but the ideas of the Cuban communists will remain as proof on this planet that if they are worked at with fervor and dignity, they can produce the material and cultural goods that human beings need”

At the same party congress, current Cuban president (and Castro’s younger brother) Raul Castro pledged to continue the country’s recent opening to foreign capital and private enterprise but “without hurry and with no improvisation.” From Reuters:

Arturo Lopez-Levy, who teaches Latin American politics at Texas University, likened [Raul] Castro’s moves to defensive driving as he seeks to maintain Cuba’s single-party political system.

“Castro expressed a desire to broaden the scope of the reforms and speed up their implementation, but he wants to preserve a cushion space for maneuver and reverse,” Lopez-Levy said.

“They are going to remain with one foot on the accelerator and one foot on the brake,” Lopez-Levy told the New York Times.
