Leaked Texts Reveal More Than Just Specific Details of Johnny Depp’s Alleged Physical Attacks on Amber Heard

Leaked Texts Reveal More Than Just Specific Details of Johnny Depp’s Alleged Physical Attacks on Amber Heard
Photo: AP

In a series of text messages obtained by Entertainment Tonight, Johnny Depp’s assistant seems to confirm allegations made by Depp’s estranged wife, Amber Heard, who has testified under oath that she suffered long-term abuse at the hands of the A-list actor. “When I told him he kicked you, he cried,” the assistant writes on one message. “It was disgusting. And he knows it.”

Though ET doesn’t reference where the screenshots came from, they were almost certainly provided by Heard, who, like many women before her, has been accused of lying about or embellishing the details of the abuse in order to obtain something—in this case, a more favorable divorce settlement.

Heard, who was married to Depp for 15 months and did not sign a prenuptial agreement, stands to collect several million dollars, according to tabloid estimates and Depp’s own lawyer, who has accused her of “attempting to secure a premature financial resolution by alleging abuse.” For some outlets, like TMZ, this is enough reason to bury her, despite the evidence she has provided so far which includes 1) her word, 2) the texts, 3) photographs of her injuries and 4) a prominent bruise on her right cheek. Depp, through a spokesperson, generally denies the allegations.

The leaked texts, which are not dated but were purportedly sent in 2014, also suggest Depp’s assistant, Stephen Deuters, was well aware of the abuse.

“Think he’s just texted you. He’s incredibly apologetic and knows that he has done wrong,” the text reads. “He wants to get better now. He’s been very explicit about that this morning. Feel like we’re at a critical juncture.”

In another message, Deuters suggests Depp was unable to remember attacking Heard: “He was appalled. When I told him he kicked you, he cried. It was disgusting. And he knows it.”

Deuters has not publicly commented on the texts, though TMZ reports—without once providing a direct quote—that he says the messages were “heavily doctored.”

The gossip site is also one of the few to stand behind Depp, who, unlike Heard, is an A-list actor on whose good side is advantageous to remain. According to the site: “Deuters says he knows of no acts of abuse toward Amber at the hands of Johnny and has never made such a claim to anyone. He adds, Johnny has never been violent toward anyone he knows. Deuters says the texts themselves are suspicious because they don’t even show a date.”

As Allie Jones eloquently points out at The Cut, the way the media has been reporting this scandal indicates an encouraging sea change towards giving victims the benefit of the doubt until there is concrete evidence to disbelieve them. TMZ, bless its heart, has missed the boat.

Photographs Show Trump Supporters Pepper Spraying Protesters in The Face (UPDATED)

Last week, photographer Jimi Giannatti attended a Trump rally in San Diego, where protestors converged to denounce in particular the candidate’s deeply racist anti-Mexican stance. Trump’s supporters were ready for them, and armed with pepper spray.

A similar Trump event in San Jose last night has drawn national attention (and considerable worry from the typically anti-violence left) for violent behavior on the part of Trump’s opponents. But these photos show that both sides are resorting to increasingly brazen acts of violence. Giannatti described the scene to me over email:

What happened was ALL Trump protestors were forced across the street from the San Diego Convention Center and NO protestors were allowed near it. There was a HUGE police presence. This segregation of pro-Trumpers and anti-Trumpers continued all day until the Trump rally ended in the Convention Center - THEN a huge contingent of Trump supporters (mostly younger males) made their way unencumbered by the SDPD over across the train tracks and towards downtown and began harassing the anti-Trumpers who had been there peacefully all day - and I mean aggressively challenging them to fights, cursing, etc. All with the cops standing mere feet away from them with their backs turned.

In my photo you see the aftermath to where some extremely passionate hispanic anti-Trumpers were defending their choice to protest Trump to the hating pro-Trumpers and were met by a sneak attack, completely acting in concert, spraying of pepper spray by the two guys in the pic. The pepper spray went everywhere - you cans see it’s direction bending in the shot by the strong winds that day - Several people, including myself, experienced an instant burning in our lungs an extreme burning to our eyes.

Giannatti adds that he “can say with certainty that I saw no anti-Trump violence”—though this week’s escalation shows that elements of both sides are willing to hurt one another.

Update—Photographer Eric Rosenwald captured a video of the pepper spray attack:

This Was a Bad, Gruesome, and Utterly Typical Week for Men Killing Their Partners

This Was a Bad, Gruesome, and Utterly Typical Week for Men Killing Their Partners

The latest—never the last—horrifying deadly shooting rampage in America was brought to us by Mainak Sarkar, a disaffected former UCLA student who murdered Professor William Klug over an imagined slight. Before killing Klug and then himself, Sarkar also killed his estranged wife Ashley Hasti. While no one was paying attention or keeping track, Hasti’s murder was one in a line of particularly relentless, horrifying, gruesome domestic violence murders in the past seven days.

It’s easier, sometimes, not to notice patterns—particularly at an outlet where we write regularly about violence against women, which is constant and, if you’re not careful, numbing in its grim predictability.

But even in a culture where women regularly die at the hands of their partners—over 1,000 each year, by one estimate—it’s hard not to take notice of a week like this one, as spring softens the air and fills in the trees, and the daylight stretches out into the evening, and the local headlines are filled with a particular kind of horror. To review:

Friday, May 27: A 78-year-old former professor was arrested in Riviera Beach, Florida, accused of stabbing his 79-year-old wife to death. James Huhta is accused of fatally stabbing his wife Mary in the stomach—and then, “overcome with grief,” per CBS’ curious phrasing, taking an overdose of insulin and attempting to leap from the balcony of their condominium. Huhta’s suicide attempt failed. He was listed in stable condition on Monday.

Sunday, May 29: Kenneth Alan Amyx was arrested in Plano, Texas, and charged with the killing of his girlfriend Jennifer Streit-Spears. Amyx told police the murder was part of a failed suicide pact, and that when the woman “chickened out” he had to “finish her off” by stabbing her to death. Amyx was also wanted at the time of the murder for “continuous sexual abuse” of a child in Rockwall County and indecency with a child in Dallas County.

Monday, May 30: Karen Perez, who was just 15 years old, was found dead, her partially nude body stuffed under a kitchen sink in an abandoned apartment. Her boyfriend, who hasn’t been named because he’s also a minor, has been charged with murder. Prosecutors said cellphone audio captured Perez being sexually assaulted and then choked. On the recording, they say, Perez could be heard saying both “I don’t want to” and “I don’t want to die.”

Monday, May 30: Ashley Solano, 29, was found beaten to death in the laundry room of an apartment complex in Adelphi, Washington. Stephen Nurse, 46, has been charged with the murder. While it’s still under investigation, police say Nurse and Solano were previously in a relationship. Solano was the mother of a three-year-old boy.

Tuesday, May 31: Graphic artist Blake Leibel was charged in a Los Angeles courtroom with the murder of Iana Kasian, his girlfriend and the mother of his newborn daughter. Leibel is accused of torturing and mutilating Kasian; the prosecutor’s office said in a statement that “all the blood was drained from her body.” Leibel is said to have abruptly abandoned his former wife when she was eight and a half months pregnant, beginning a relationship with Kasian. Two weeks after his child with Kasian was born, he was arrested on charges of sexual assault against a third woman.

Tuesday, May 31: Former Phoenix police officer Christopher Glen Wright allegedly shot and killed his wife Nasbah by the side of the road. Wright is also accused of shooting a good Samaritan named Tomas Olivas Ornelas who tried to help. Wright told arresting officers the murder was Nasbah’s fault, whom he accused of cheating on him. He also told police both of his victims “deserved to die” and he would “do it all again.”

Thursday, June 2: Ashley Hasti was found dead in her Brooklyn Park, Minnesota home. She married Sarkar in 2011 and her family told media outlets the couple broke up about a year ago. Sarkar is believed to have shot and killed her, then traveled thousands of miles to murder Klug, his former professor. A “kill list” kept by Sarkar featured the names of Hasti and Klug, as well as a third professor, who is unharmed.

Thursday, June 2: Patrick Antoine, 39, turned himself in to Norwich, Connecticut police. Police say Antonine admitted to stabbing Margarette Mady, his eight-months-pregnant wife, to death, then setting their apartment on fire. The couple have two other children.

And that’s just the domestic news: internationally, we also have the case of 22-year-old Italian university student Sara Di Pietrantonio, who died Sunday after allegedly being set on fire by her ex-boyfriend.

A week like this of any other kind of incident—mass shootings, publicized incidents of bullying, canoeing accidents—would probably occasion some editorials, some discussion on the morning talk shows, maybe even a grim press conference from the president, vowing not to stand for any more. Consider, for example, that we are now on day seven of a news cycle about a dead gorilla.

But because this is simply violence, murder, mayhem enacted on women—the same kind as always—we won’t see any of that here.

Our national attention isn’t always impatient. We have an amazing capacity to see every bit of presidential election jockeying, for one. It’s not that we refuse to see pain, either: just that we see pain most clearly when it registers as raw, or surprising, and violence against women is so common that it’s ceased to seem like anything but more of the same. It’s easier, sometimes, not to notice patterns. But that doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

Canadian Magazine Commits Incredibly Charming Copy-Editing Error About 10-Gallon Hats

Before a piece of journalism is published in a magazine or newspaper, it usually undergoes one or several rounds of edits, designed to make its arguments more forceful, its narrative more compelling, its language more unified, or its spelling and grammar more accurate. Occasionally, due to some small ignorance or misunderstanding about a writer’s meaning, an editor will make a change that has precisely the opposite of this clarifying effect. If you’ve read the headline on this post and know anything about the standard versus metric systems of measurement, you may already know where I’m going with this.

Yesterday, the website for Maclean’s, a popular Canadian weekly magazine, published a report entitled “Hillary Clinton limps to the finish line,” about an event the candidate held in New Jersey on Wednesday. It includes the following passage about a local high-school band that performed at the rally:

Inside the coliseum, which serves as the athletic centre for the inner-city satellite campus of the state university of the Garden State, there was a high-school marching band performing in 38-litre hats and white boots, and cheerleaders in gold lamé hot pants.

Allen Abel, the reporter, presumably wrote “10-gallon hats,” a colloquial term for the large cowboy-style headwear pictured above. His editor, perhaps a Canadian national who is used to measuring liquid in liters, may have made the change to make the phrase more legible to his or her countrymen. Or maybe the Maclean’s style guide mandates use of the metric system, as is generally accepted in Canada.

Whatever happened, “38-litre hats” is a hell of a phrase, and I’m glad it made it into the article. As of the publication of this post, it has not yet been edited.

Man Contracts Zika to Brag About Having Sex Seven Times in Nine Days in New York Times

Man Contracts Zika to Brag About Having Sex Seven Times in Nine Days in New York Times
Photo: AP

In possibly the horniest news story of all time, the New York Times reports today that a 46-year-old French man had sex with his 24-year-old partner seven times in nine days. Each time, they had vaginal sex; each time, he ejaculated in her mouth. Also, he might have given her Zika.

The man had just returned to France from Brazil when the sex happened. He had had some Zika symptoms, but they’d gone away. The Times reports:

The woman fell ill on Feb. 20. Both were tested for Zika infection on Feb. 23. The man had high levels of the virus in his semen and urine, but none in his blood or saliva. The woman had the virus in her urine and saliva, and antibodies to the virus in her blood. But a vaginal swab was negative for the infection.

The two were using oral sex as a form of birth control, said Dr. Yazdan Yazdanpanah, an infectious disease specialist at the National Institute of Health and Medical Research in Paris and one of the report’s authors.

In a letter to the New England Journal of Medicine, scientists postulated that this was evidence the Zika virus may be transmissible by oral sex. Kissing, however, is probably fine.

“Casual kissing has got to be safe because, if it weren’t, don’t you think we’d see a lot more Zika? Every mom who kissed her baby would pass it on,” Dr. John T. Brooks told the Times. “To be sure, we’d have to look for deep kissing in the absence of sexual contact, and that’s hard to find.”

Do you have experience with deep kissing in the absence of sexual contact? Let us know in the comments.

Just like the Antec model, these Vansky LED light strips plug directly into your TV’s USB port for power, and sticks to the back of the set via built-in adhesive. Once you turn your TV on, the light strip will cast a soft glow on the wall behind it, which can reduce eyestrain when watching in the dark, and improve your TV’s perceived black levels.

Whenever we post a deal on the Antec light, it sells out within hours. I’m not sure if that’ll be the case today, but I wouldn’t take any chances.

Donald Trump Points Out the Single Black Person At His Rally

0
0

Today in Redding, Calif. Donald Trump rambled, as he does, about the tenor of his campaign. He was responding to the intense rioting between protestors and his supporters that took place in San Jose last night. In the middle of his nearly endless spiel, Trump began talking about an incident that happened in Tucson in March, in which protestors wearing white KKK hoods were beaten by a black member of the crowd.

http://gawker.com/protestors-and...

While reciting this anecdote, Trump further breaks off to wonder about how that man is doing. In the process of that tangent, he (presumably) points out a different black person in this particular crowd, which produces yet another jaw-dropping moment in the presidential candidacy of Donald Trump:

Look at my African American over here! Look at him. Are you the greatest? You know what I’m talking about?

Is it worse that there’s only one black person at this Donald Trump rally, or that Trump referred to him as “my African American?”

Here’s a longer video for more context:

Muhammad Ali, The Greatest of All Time, Has Died

The heavyweight champion greatest-of-all-time Muhammad Ali died early Saturday morning at age 74 after he was reportedly hospitalized with respiratory problems earlier this week.

A spokesperson initially said Ali was expecting a “brief stay” when news broke he had been hospitalized in Phoenix Thursday, but reports began circulating late Friday night that his condition had become “grave.”

As a boxer, Ali won dozens of championships, three heavyweight titles and an Olympics gold medal. It was during his first heavyweight championship against Sonny Liston in 1964 that he declared himself “the greatest,” a nickname that outlasted his boxing career. His personality was as much a draw as his bouts and he remained a prominent voice for civil rights causes long after his retirement in 1981.

Born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. in 1942, Ali renounced his name when he converted to Islam in the 1960's. A vocal proponent of the religion, he recently spoke out against Donald Trump over the candidate’s proposed plan to ban Muslims from the country.

It was one last political turn to cap a lifetime of many. In the 1960's, Ali’s boxing career was involuntarily paused by the government, when he was arrested and convicted of draft dodging for refusing to serve in Vietnam over his religious beliefs. He was blunt in his reasoning: “I ain’t got no quarrel with them Vietcong.”

“My conscience won’t let me go shoot my brother, or some darker people, some poor, hungry people in the mud, for big powerful America, and shoot them for what?” Ali said at the time. “They never called me nigger. They never lynched me. They didn’t put no dogs on me.”

During the trial, he was banned from the sport and lost his heavyweight belt. The U.S. Supreme Court later overturned his conviction in the 1971 case, Clay v United States and his title was restored. He continued boxing for another ten years.

He also continued his work outside the ring, helping negotiate the release of U.S. hostages in a sit-down meeting with the then-president of Iraq, Saddam Hussein, in 1990. In 2005, he was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Ali was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 1984 and the symptoms visibly accelerated in recent years. By last September, he had stopped making public appearances entirely.

He leaves behind his wife, Yolanda, seven daughters and two sons.

Obama Has Now Commuted More Prison Sentences Than the Last Seven Presidents Combined

Obama Has Now Commuted More Prison Sentences Than the Last Seven Presidents Combined
Photo: AP

On Friday, President Obama announced grants of clemency to 42 prisoners serving sentences for non-violent drug offenses. Nearly half of the prisoners whose sentences the President commuted were serving life terms. Most of these prisoners are expected to be released on October 1, while others may have to wait until next June.

President Obama has now commuted the sentences of 348 individuals, more than the previous seven presidents combined (Obama’s presidential predecessor George W. Bush granted clemency in just 11 cases). The President enacted nearly half of these commutations in the last three months—61 commutations were granted at the end of March and another 54 in May.

The White House acknowledged the severe limitations of the presidential pardon in combatting harsh sentencing for non-violent drug offenders, saying, in a press release:

“Despite these important efforts, only legislation can bring about lasting change to the federal system. There remain thousands of men and women in federal prison serving sentences longer than necessary, often due to overly harsh mandatory minimum sentences. That is one reason it is critical that both the House and the Senate continue to cooperate on a bipartisan basis to get a criminal justice reform bill to the President’s desk.”

However, the White House’s own efforts are still a far cry from the 10,000 shorted prison terms for drug offenders Obama promised to deliver in 2014 by using the power of his presidential pardon.

More than 35,000 inmates have applied for clemency in response to the administration’s call for applications in 2014.

The latest Federal Bureau of Prison figures put the number of people currently incarcerated for drug offenses in federal prisons at 85,419. That’s 46. 4 percent of the total federal prison population.

A 2013 Sentencing Project report estimated that more than 10,000 people are serving life sentences for being convicted of a non-violent crime, 2,500 of which were convicted of a nonviolent drug offense.

Mark Halperin Declares Trump Comments 'Not Racial' Because 'Mexico Is Not a Race'

Mark Halperin Declares Trump Comments 'Not Racial' Because 'Mexico Is Not a Race'
Photo: AP

On Friday’s edition of MSNBC’s “With All Due Respect,” two white guys had a spirited debate over a question that has America stumped: Were the comments Donald Trump made about Judge Gonzalo Curiel’s ethnicity racist? To be fair, it seemed like a conversation only one of them wanted to be having.

The video, flagged by Media Matters, shows Bloomberg journalist Mark Halperin insisting that Trump’s comments were “not racial” because “Mexico is not a race.” His co-host John Heilemann maintains that Trumps’ comments engage in “racial politics” and are designed to “stir up racial animus.”

The co-hosts were responding to remarks Trump has made throughout the week arguing that Curiel should recuse himself from cases involving Trump University, claiming the judge’s “Mexican heritage” is a “conflict of interest.” Curiel was born in Indiana.

On Friday, CNN’s Jake Tapper asked Trump if suggesting that Curiel cannot do his job because of his ethnicity is not the definition of racism. To which Trump glibly responded, “He’s proud of his heritage. I’m building a wall.”

“I think I’m going to do very well with Hispanics,” Trump added.

That journalists have to ask the presumptive Republican presidential nominee this kind of question is already chilling enough without them asking the question of one another.

By the end of the news segment, Halperin comes around to calling Trump’s comments “racially tinged.” One might say Halperin’s own face is “tinged” with the mangled grin of a person actively wondering whether they are full of shit.

Documents Reveal Snowden Tried to Register Concerns About Surveillance With the NSA

Documents Reveal Snowden Tried to Register Concerns About Surveillance With the NSA

Documents obtained by Vice News through the Freedom of Information Act show that Edward Snowden tried to express his concerns about government surveillance to the NSA before handing over files to journalists. These revelations contradict federal agencies’ assertion that Snowden never went through “proper channels” to address concerns over the constitutionality of certain NSA practices.

The NSA has stuck to their story that Snowden never alerted them to anything he found troubling about their practices. In May 2014, the NSA released an email from Snowden—the only one the agency claimed it could find—which contained a question about legal authority but “did not raise allegations or concerns about wrongdoing or abuse.”

Emails released to Vice News reveal many details the NSA has never made the public aware of, including multiple interactions between Snowden and the NSA Oversight Board, and that Snowden registered complaints about two NSA training programs.

Snowden has maintained that he tried to raise concerns about government spying with official channels before leaking the information.

Snowden testified to the Eureopean Parliament in 2014:

Yes. I had reported these clearly problematic programs to more than ten distinct officials, none of whom took any action to address them. As an employee of a private company rather than a direct employee of the US government, I was not protected by US whistleblower laws, and I would not have been protected from retaliation and legal sanction for revealing classified information about lawbreaking in accordance with the recommended process.

Ben Stein Says Trump Is Bad at Business and Economics, Good at Getting His Vote

Ben Stein Says Trump Is Bad at Business and Economics, Good at Getting His Vote
Photo: AP

The Republican economist and former Nixon speechwriter Ben Stein burned presidential hopeful Donald Trump many times in an interview published Saturday by The Guardian. The only redeeming thing Stein had to say about Trump is that he will be voting for him, although he’s previously stated that he would not.

On Trump’s business acumen:

He is not a great businessman. He inherited a great deal of money. He did some successful real estate deals. Hardly anyone could miss doing successful real estate deals in New York considering the incredible boom that has taken place and the very low base point when he started out. He is not a great businessman at all – in no way.

On the feasibility of Trump’s economic policies:

I think Trump is popular because he says: I am going to go to China and get those jobs back. But he is not going to be able to do that. And any attempt to try would be a disaster.

On Trump’s grasp of economics:

I don’t think Trump knows a goddamn thing about economics.

On Trump qua Trump:

But I like him anyway, I might add.

So close.

http://gear.kinja.com/start-sous-vid...

Lifehacker has a great explainer on sous-vide cooking for you to check out, but the basic idea is that you seal your food in plastic bags, and then cook it in precisely heated water over a fairly long period of time. Here are some advantages to this process from Lifehacker’s guide:

  • Cooking sous-vide results in evenly-cooked meat and fish.
  • Cooking sous-vide gives you specific control over the final temperature of the meat, avoiding overdone, dried-out food.
  • You can hold foods cooked sous-vide at their specified temperature for long periods of time without damaging the texture or quality of the dish, making it an ideal cooking method for holiday dinners or meals with multiple components and side-dishes.
  • Bacterial or other contamination is largely not an issue with sous-vide cooking. While you may be cooking up to minimum safe temperatures, the length of time you’re holding the food at its safe temperature will pasteurize your meat and ensure the safety of your food, meaning “safe” meat doesn’t have to equal “dry” or “not pink” meat any longer. Still, keep your meat thermometer handy, and test before serving. Remember, sous-vide lets you hold food at temp for long periods without diminishing the quality of the food, so if it’s undercooked, you can seal the bag and put it back in.
  • Sous-vide cooking is by nature a repeatable process. Set the temperature, set the timer, and walk away. You will wind up with perfectly cooked food every time you do it.

Trump Doesn't Trust a Muslim Judge to Give Him a Fair Ruling Either

Trump Doesn't Trust a Muslim Judge to Give Him a Fair Ruling Either
Photo: AP

Donald Trump continues to expound upon which ethnic groups should be barred from adjudicating his Trump University class-action lawsuit. The presumptive GOP nominee stands accused of defrauding students of millions of dollars in what New York’s attorney general has flatly described as a “scam.” Trump denies any wrongdoing.

In a CBS News “Face the Nation” interview that aired Sunday, host John Dickerson asked Trump if he thought a Muslim judge would be biased against him.

“It’s possible, yes, yeah,” Trump replied. “That would be possible, absolutely.” Well, what else did you expect?

Trump has called for a ban on all Muslims from entering the United States.

Dickerson responded with an invocation of common decency and American folklore: “Isn’t there sort of a tradition through in America that we don’t judge people by who their parents were and where they come from?”

“I’m not talking about tradition—I’m talking about common sense, OK?”

Trump repeated his assertion that U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel, currently presiding over the Trump University case, is biased against him because he is “very strongly pro-Mexican” and should therefor recuse himself from the case.

“I’m going to build a wall. I’m going to build a wall,” Trump exclaimed, a line he’s previously used regarding his suspicion of Curiel’s “Mexican heritage.”

Trump is not only a shameless racist, he’s also using this despicable logic to try to convince the public that the case against him has no merit. “He’s not treating me fairly,” Trump whined, referring to Curiel. “I’ve had numerous lawyers, I have a case where thousands of people have said it’s a great school.”

Hundreds of pages of documents from the lawsuit that were unsealed on Tuesday indicate otherwise.

Some of the most damning testimony came from Ronald Schnackenberg, a former salesman for Trump University, who stated in an affidavit, “while Trump University claimed it wanted to help consumers make money in real estate, in fact Trump University was only interested in selling every person the most expensive seminars they possibly could.”

Viceland Employee Calls out Vice’s 'Sexist' Reputation on Live TV While Co-hosts Put a Condom on a Microphone

Viceland’s live broadcast from the Governors Ball music festival this Saturday night was a sloppy, sexist (I mean, “edgy”) mess, and the only person who seemed to notice was one very pissed-off host.

Amidst rain delays and soaked TV equipment, three Viceland employees were brought in front of the cameras to waste time until The Killers performed. The hosts—production assistant Jake Lawson, equipment manager Dan Meyer, and former intern Taji Ameen—were reporting on the giant puddles of water pooling at their feet when shit got real.

Lawson—inhabiting the role of a safety inspector, crossed with a men’s rights activist, topped off with a skinny tie—attempted a flaccid comedy bit with co-host Ameen. The duo gave viewers a “sex-ed class” with Lawson’s mic serving as makeshift banana-and-or-dildo.

This juvenile display upset Meyer, who delivered the following exquisite diatribe amidst shouts of “you gotta pinch the tip” and “we’re gonna bring it on down.”

Whose idea is this? It isn’t funny…there’s enough dicks on TV already…I hate this, I’m just gonna say full-on that this is stupid…I can say what I think, I know how to do this…You know, we’ve been struggling with the fact that we’re considered a sexist company because we only have men on TV and now we’re doing dick jokes? This is embarrassing. I don’t think we should even be doing this at all. And if our viewers are too stupid to…you want sincere, honest advice about safety? Why don’t you talk about the fact that we’re standing in water surrounded by electronics.

Meyer had a lot of great lines that night, in fact. He kicked off the segment saying, “I just want to thank Viceland for having the faith in me not to say something that would completely bankrupt their entire enterprise. Which I very well could do.”

Meyer later apologized to Lawson on TV.

New York Governor Cuomo Orders Blacklist of Groups That Support Boycotting Israel

On Sunday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed an unprecedented executive order for agencies under his control to divest from companies and organizations aligned with the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement (B.D.S.), which puts economic and political pressure on Israel to end its occupation of Palestine. Cuomo announced the order at the Harvard Club in Manhattan, then marched in New York’s Celebrate Israel Parade.

Cuomo told his audience at the private social club, “If you boycott against Israel, New York will boycott you. If you divert revenues from Israel, New York will divert revenues from you. If you sanction Israel, New York will sanction you.”

The order gives the Office of General Services generous leeway to compose a list over the next six months of any groups engaged in, “boycott, divestment or sanctions actively targeting Israel, either directly or through a parent or subsidiary.” The list will be available to the public and be based on “credible information.”

Once all the names are named, executive-branch agencies—including public-benefit corporations, public boards, and much of the state government— will be obligated to divest from any group on the list.

Omar Barghouti, a founder of B.D.S., told the New York Times in an email that Cuomo’s actions are a sign of waning popular support for Israel in New York and beyond, “Having lost many battles for hearts and minds at the grass-roots level, Israel has adopted since 2014 a new strategy to criminalize support for B.D.S. from the top,” Barghouti wrote.

Salon staff writer Ben Norton likened Cuomo’s executive order to McCarthyite policies.

According to NY1 News, Cuomo is the first governor in the country to sign an executive order denouncing the BDS movement.

Cuomo has recently made a habit of expressing political solidarity by banning people from doing things. In March, Cuomo, along with New York City mayor Bill de Blasio, announced a statewide ban on nonessential government travel to North Carolina to protest the passage of a bill that struck down all of the state’s LGBT anti-discrimination statutes. Cuomo has enacted similar bans on travel to Mississippi and Indiana after these state’s passed laws that protect religious freedom over the rights of LGBT people.

Update: New York Senator Chuck Schumer said on Sunday that he’s so inspired by Cuomo’s blacklist, he’d like to help implement it on a federal level. Schemer told reports “I think that the state (of New York) should not do any business with any company that participates in BDS, and I am looking at introducing a federal law to do the same thing. BDS is a movement that is just totally unfair to Israel.”

By now it should be clear: Donald Trump is bad news for kids.

On Wednesday, 14-year-old Marcus Griego was charged with aggravated battery on a police officer, a third degree felony, for allegedly throwing a rock at cops during a riot that broke out during a Trump rally in Albuquerque last week, KRQE News reports. The teenager has since been charged with a second aggravated battery felony count. Two other people have also been arrested in connection to the riot.

Albuquerque Police spokesperson Celina Espinoza told ABC News, “The commander actually witnessed Marcus throw a rock directly and hit the sergeant that was standing next to him.” The ADP has yet to report evidence of Griego’s crime aside from a picture of the Griego wearing a Superman t-shirt, allegedly taken after he threw the rocks.

The District Attorney said they will prosecute Griego an adult, a decision Griego’s lawyer called an “overreaction.” The lawyer told ABC News that Grriego went to the Trump rally but has denied throwing rocks.

Griego is not the first teenager to face charges arising from Trump rally incidents, but his are particularly harsh.

According to ABC News, Griego is being held at a juvenile detention center and has no criminal record.

Alberto Gonzales Defends Donald Trump's Right to Do Completely Different, Non-Racist Thing

Since Donald Trump began his overtly racial attacks on the judge overseeing the Trump University lawsuit, leading Democrats and Republicans have rightly denounced the presidential nominee’s comments as wrong and bad.

This weekend, however, former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales emerged from his enhanced interrogation basement to offer a compelling counterargument: If Trump were instead questioning Judge Gonzalo Curiel’s impartiality for legitimate reasons, it would actually be totally fine.

On Saturday, Gonzales defended the criticisms of an imagined, non-bigoted version of Trump under the carefully-worded headline “Trump has a right to ask if Judge Gonzalo Curiel is fair.” From The Washington Post (emphasis added):

Certainly, Curiel’s Mexican heritage alone would not be enough to raise a question of bias (for all we know, the judge supports Trump’s pledge to better secure our borders and enforce the rule of law). As someone whose own ancestors came to the United States from Mexico, I know ethnicity alone cannot pose a conflict of interest.

But there may be other factors to consider in determining whether Trump’s concerns about getting an impartial trial are reasonable. Curiel is, reportedly, a member of a group called La Raza Lawyers of San Diego. Trump’s aides, meanwhile, have indicated that they believe Curiel is a member of the National Council of La Raza, a vocal advocacy organization that has vigorously condemned Trump and his views on immigration. The two groups are unaffiliated, and Curiel is not a member of NCLR.

Appearing on Fox News Sunday, Gonzales repeated his largely hypothetical argument, earning pushback from Fox & Friends host Tucker Carlson.

“Why would Trump even bring up the country of origin of this man’s parents? Aren’t what your parents do or where they were born, isn’t that by definition irrelevant?” said Carlson.

“Exactly,” agreed Gonzales, making a less than convincing case for the relevance of his own neat thought experiment.

Guy Named Dave Announces Plan to Do Nothing This Weekend

After “serious study,” “much thought and prayer” and “several days with some of the best minds in politics,” David French regretfully announced on Sunday that he is not running for president. Who’s David French, you ask? A guy who was running for president.

http://gawker.com/conservative-i...

Except now he’s not.

French, the celebrated legal scholar behind articles like “Jesus Was Transgender? I Thought He Was Gay,” “In the Battle of Jedi Versus Sith, I’ll Take the Sith Every Time” and “Game of Thrones Recap - Social Justice Edition,” seemed like an odd choice to lead conservative pundit Bill Kristol’s third-party push, a fact the National Review blogger acknowledged in his tearful “aloha.”

“I gave it serious thought — as a pretty darn obscure lawyer, writer, and veteran — only because we live in historic times,” writes French. “But given the timing, the best chance for success goes to a person who either is extraordinarily wealthy (or has immediate access to extraordinary wealth) or is a transformational political talent.”

As a similarly obscure, ordinarily wealthy and non-transformational political talent, I, too, am not running for president. What are you not doing this weekend?
