Here's What Happens If You Try To Cut Off The President's Motorcade On A Bicycle
President Barack Obama was in New York City this week to join Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show. Moments before his motorcade cruised across Park Avenue, some apparently oblivious or brazen bicyclist thought they could “make the light” and cross before POTUS. The cops were not having it.
Before you get ready to fire up your hot take on police brutality, it seems like the officers here did exactly what needed to be done to make sure and errant obstacle didn’t slow—or, theoretically threaten—the presidential procession.
NBC New York says “the unidentified cyclist was cuffed and given a summons for disorderly conduct.”
The takeaway here is to pay attention to your surroundings, city bikers. When a street that’s normally gridlocked is devoid of cars except for lit-up police vans you’re probably going to need a new route. Besides that, the president always has right-of-way.
As for Obama’s Tonight Show appearance, you should be able to catch it this evening if you have a TV. Or likely a little later on the internet.

New Startup That Sends Dossiers On Your Private Social Media Profiles To Potential Landlords Should Be Illegal
A new startup wants to take a “deep dive” into the private social media activity of prospective tenants—their chats, check-ins, how many times they’ve posted words like “pregnant” or “loan”—and score their “personality” for their potential landlord. Why would anyone let this happen? Because “people will give up their privacy to get something they want,” Steve Thornhill, co-founder of the British startup Score Assured tells The Washington Post.
For a bulk subscription fee, the landlord could “optionally” require all prospective tenants to grant Tenant Assured full access to their Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn profiles. Then “analytical software” starts mining everything they’ve ever done there.
How many times did they check-in to that bar? What online retail logins do they use? How often has their relationship status changed? Do they partay? That and a disconcerting more gets assessed into a “financial stress level” as well as a breakdown of five personality traits—“extraversion, neuroticism, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness”—and the report is sent to the landlord.
Thornhill is aware that some things—like age and pregnancy, which are protected statuses under the U.S. housing discrimination law—can’t legally be used as factors in determining someone’s qualifications as a tenant. “All we can do is give them the information,” Thornhill told The Washington Post. “It’s up to landlords to do the right thing.” Wink wink.
Is this illegal? “Clearly it raises alarm bells,” Seth A. Miller of Collins, Dobkin & Miller LLP, which specializes in housing and landlord/tenant law tells me in an email:
“In NYC, there is an expanded list of categories of people that cannot be discriminated against: not just race, national origin, religion, ethnicity and gender, but also source of income and lawful profession. Generally, asking a tenant about whether he or she is a member of such a group can be evidence of discrimination. [Tenant Score] facilitates this kind of discrimination. If that’s the idea, then the designer of [Tenant Score] may be legally exposed, despite the claim that it is only passing information along. Even if the makers of [Tenant Score], and the landlords who use it, manage to evade legal liability, it should be made illegal. People should not be forced to join social media just to rent an apartment, and landlords and employers should not have the right to view posts that were not written for them to read.”
Even though the landlord doesn’t directly view the social media posts, the tenant report includes “activity times” and whether they mentioned words like “no money,” “being poor,” “staying in,” “terrorist,” “fraud” and “justice.” Seth A. Miller:
“I would think that all of the metadata that could be generated from analyzing a person’s private social media posts would fall into the category of material that was not intended by the author to be seen by anyone but the intended recipient of the posts. That doesn’t make it illegal, but that is what makes it so creepy.”
Tenant Assured is just the beginning of Score Assured’s bold vision for the future. Washington Post:
By the end of July, the company expects to be offering specialized versions of the service to everyone from employers and HR departments to parents shopping around for nannies. Some day, Thornhill imagines, you won’t hire a dog sitter or book an Airbnb without first viewing their social media dossier, as compiled by his company.
There is a variety of ways in which the startup’s aspirations would fuck you. Some of them aren’t even intentional, just wonky. For example, when a Telegraph Money ran the software on their own people—who happen to post things with the words “loan” in it, being money reporters—the algorithm gave them some negative points in the financial stability department.
It’s inaccurate and discriminatory. And it’s so so creepy, as is everything Thornhill says in interviews, like “If you’re living a normal life, then, frankly, you have nothing to worry about.”

Bar none, Sport-Brella is the ultimate beach umbrella, and Amazon’s discounting it to just $41 today.
http://gear.kinja.com/bring-your-own...
Unlike a regular umbrella, Sport-Brella leans backwards and attaches to the sand with stakes, creating a kind of semi-private cocoon with enough space for a couple of chairs and a cooler. Best of all, it sets up in about five minutes (once you know what you’re doing), and can provide a full day’s worth of privacy and sun protection.
This was down to $36 a few weeks ago as a one-day Gold Box deal, but if you missed out, today’s $41 deal is still well below its usual $60.

In case you missed it, Amazon’s still running a rare Father’s Day sale on SONOS speakers. Head over to this post

Owning a KitchenAid is a rite of passage for anyone that likes to cook and bake, but if you don’t have a ton of counter space to spare, they can take up more space than they’re worth. Luckily, a new, smaller KitchenAid model recently hit the market, and Amazon’s offering the first deal we’ve seen today.
The KitchenAid Artisan Mini’s 3.5 quart bowl is the smallest in the KitchenAid lineup, and its 250 watt motor isn’t quite as strong as its larger brethren, but it’s compatible with all of the same attachments (like the spiralizer, pasta extruder, and food grinder), and boasts a 20% smaller footprint than the KitchenAid Classic, making it perfect for apartment dwellers. $280's still not cheap, but it’s the first deal we’ve seen, and a solid $50 discount. And of course, you get to choose from all 10 colors.

The Vitamix 5200 series is one of the most popular high-end blenders on the market, and a Sweethome step-up pick to boot, and Amazon will sell you one for $405 today with promo code SMALLAPPS10, within $5 of an all-time low. That’s certainly not cheap, but if you use your blender a lot, reviewers seem to agree that it’s well worth it.
https://www.amazon.com/Vitamix-5200-S...
Hands down, Nespresso is the easiest way to make decent espresso at home, and their Inissia model is on sale on Amazon for just $99 with promo code SMALLAPPS10.
http://gear.kinja.com/buying-guide-n...
We’ve seen this model slightly cheaper on rare occasions the past, but it’s still very uncommon to see it dip below $100.
https://www.amazon.com/Nespresso-D40-...
Brother laser printers dominated the voting in our Kinja Co-Op for best printer, and it’s easy to see why: They basically never jam, toner is much cheaper than ink (and it never dries out if you don’t use it), and they print much faster than any other consumer-level printer; on the order of 25-30 pages per minute, even when printing duplex. The glaring trade-off is that they don’t print in color, but it’s easier to live without that than you might think.
http://co-op.kinja.com/brother-s-hl-l...
In particular, you chose the HL-L2340DW as your favorite model, as it offers wireless networking (including AirPrint and Google Cloud Print), a small footprint, and can even use Amazon’s Dash replenishment service to automatically order toner when you’re running low. Today’s $80 deal is within $10 of an all-time low, and the best price we’ve seen all year, so go ahead and sell that Inkjet on Craigslist, and make room.

A good cordless drill/driver is something everyone should own, and this 18V Bosch is available for $75 on eBay today, or just over half what you’d pay on Amazon. That includes the drill, two batteries, a charger, and even a carrying case. Now go find a DIY project to tackle.
$48 for a year’s-supply of razor blades is a great deal, especially from Dorco, the maker of Dollar Shave Club’s excellent blades
http://lifehacker.com/5903771/forget...
That price includes a mishmash of products, but basically, it boils down to 28 cartridges, including a mix of three, four, and six-blade models. Obviously, it depends on how often you shave, but for many of you, that should last at least a year. It would probably last me like five.
This Amazon Beauty Sample box will only set you back $10 (plus a $10 credit on select beauty items) and includes L’Oreal mascara, Fekkai shampoo and conditioner and more. Note, it’s exclusive to Prime members only.
Honestly, beauty sample boxes are the best way to try out new beauty buys, without spending way too much money on something you don’t know if you like.
It may just be the beginning of summer, but American Apparel already wants to give you affordable bikinis and swim trunks. Get 25% off swimwear for everyone with the promo code SWIM25.
As someone who worked there out of desperation for college spending money one summer, AA sold out of swimwear before it even hit mid-June, so you’d better get on this quick. Just note, you need to enter the promo code at checkout to get the 25% discount.
This Delonghi espresso, latte, and cappucino machine is the very definition of extravagance, but if you love your coffee and you’ve got the cash, today’s $500 Gold Box deal is easily an all-time low, and well below its usual $850-$900.

If your favorite dress shoes are starting to look a little worn out, Amazon’s offering huge discounts on Nunn Bush men’s shoes, with prices hovering around $40 per pair. Just note that this is a Gold Box deal, meaning these prices are only available today, or until sold out.
Whether you spend a lot of time outdoors, or you just want to be prepared for an emergency, this 15W Anker solar panel can charge two USB gadgets at once using the power of the sun. $39 is the lowest price we’ve seen on this model, and its 4.3 star review average is stellar for a product in this category.

Mpow’s Swift Bluetooth headphones dominated 2015, and the company’s ergonomic Cheetah line is one of many great sequels. $22 is one of the best deals we’ve seen on this model, so if you’ve yet to cut the cord, there’s no time like the present.

Update: Now up to $14. That’s obviously not quite as enticing, but it’s still a great price.

It goes without saying that this drone isn’t as easy to fly as a GPS-stabilized DJI, and its camera can be charitably described as a throwback to the 2008 smartphone era. But even so, it looks like a ton of fun to fly (check out the YouTube reviews), and it could be a good stepping stone into the hobby before you go out and spend hundreds on a “real” camera drone.

While it doesn’t have the brand recognition of Nest’s learning Thermostat, the Ecobee3 Smart Thermostat one-ups its most popular competitor by including a wireless remote sensor that you can place elsewhere in your house, giving the thermostat a more accurate picture of your home’s overall temperature. Plus, it’ll work with Siri via HomeKit, and your Amazon Echo too.

A portable, rechargeable work light is one of those things you might not use often, but it’s great to have one handy for dimly lit DIY projects, late night tire changes, or extended power outages. This model actually includes a zoomable lens, meaning you can focus or widen the light beam, and in true Kinja Deals spirit, it can even charge your phone over USB in a pinch.

If you’re still listening to any of your TVs through their built-in speakers, here’s an easy fix for $69, as long as you don’t mind buying a refurb.
This Vizio Sound Stand pumps out up to 95 dB of crisp stereo sound, which needless to say is a lot louder than your TV’s build in speakers. Plus, you won’t even need to find a place to put it, because your TV sits right on top. This might not be ideal for your main home theater setup (personally, we’d recommend this 5.1 channel Vizio system), but it’s a perfect little integrated system for your other TVs around the house.
Anker’s kevlar-wrapped PowerLine Lightning cables are some of the most popular we’ve ever posted

I’ve collected several of these cables over the last few months, and while I haven’t used them long enough to know if they’re actually more durable, they definitely feel weighty and premium. Note that this deal is only available on the white model.

Most gaming mice look like futuristic EMP grenades or robotic pets, but Razer’s DeathAdder became one of your favorite gaming mice by keeping things clean and simple. If you want a tablet to basically use as a portable TV (that’s basically what my iPad is at this point), a big screen is important, and you’d be hard pressed to find a better deal right now than Amazon’s Fire HD 10 for as little as $180 today, a $50 discount.
It’s not as fast as an iPad, it doesn’t have as many apps as a standard Android tablet, and its 1280x800 screen is far from spectacular. But if you just want to binge on Game of Thrones while you cook dinner, it’s tough to beat an internet-connected 10” screen for this price.

This Gigabyte mechanical keyboard’s versatile Cherry MX Red switches are great for both work and play, its chassis isn’t in-your-face like most mechanical gaming keyboards, and at $60, it’s one of the most affordable Cherry MX-based mechanical keyboards we’ve ever seen.

You’ll need to do a little legwork to get a $20 rebate, but if you still haven’t experienced the joys of using a mechanical keyboard, I’d say it’s worth it.

After a longer-than-usual layoff, PayPal’s eBay storefront is once again offering a solid discount on a $100 iTunes gift card. This time around, it’s a 15% discount, compared to the more frequent 20% deal, but if your balance is empty or running low, it’s still worth stocking up.
You know the little charging brick that came with your phone? Throw it out, and spend $7 on this replacement from Aukey (with code IBEEGE8R). It’s basically the same size as Apple’s standard iPhone charger, but it includes two ports, folding prongs, and 2.4A of power (instead of 1A) to charge your devices faster.

Amazon’s Prime Pantry program is great for stocking up on household goods and non-perishable foods without actually having to visit a store, but the $5.99 per box shipping charge has always been a drag. This month though, if you buy five select items, you can get that fee waived.

Bonus: If you already have a no-rush free shipping credit in your account, this deal actually appears to stack, netting you an extra $6 discount.

Navy Admiral to Plead Guilty in Extremely Rude Corruption Scandal Known as "Fat Leonard"
Robert Gilbeau, a one-star admiral in the U.S. Navy, will plead guilty to his alleged role in the “Fat Leonard” scandal, which is not named after that kid who used to sit with Smelly Ryan in your middle school cafeteria every day, but a Singapore-based defense contractor who is accused of doling out bribes.
Leonard Glenn Francis, proprietor of a company called Glenn Defense Marine Asia, is known in maritime circles as Fat Leonard, “for his girth,” according to the Washington Post. To which I say, the man may have plied Navy officers with cash and sex with prostitutes in exchange for contracts with Glenn Defense, but that doesn’t mean we can’t call him something nice, like Big-boned Leonard.
As the Post notes, Gilbeau is among the only admirals to face criminal prosecution in modern history. He is accused of making a false statement to investigators during the probe, and faced scrutiny for his ties to Husky and Handsome Leonard, according to the Post’s sources.
About a dozen other people have also been brought up on federal charges related to the investigation, and It’s Actually Mostly Muscle Touch It Yourself If You Don’t Believe Me Leonard himself plead guilty to offering the bribes last year. He faces a maximum of 25 years in prison.
Rich Man Whose Enormous Boat Once Took a Frenchman's Life Now Also Dead
Thomas “Tom” Perkins—plutocrat, investor, patriot, businessman, innovator, guy once convicted of involuntary manslaughter for ramming a French guy’s small boat with his $130 million, football field-sized yacht and killing him—is dead at 84, the New York Times reports.
http://valleywag.gawker.com/everything-tom...
Perkins, whose namesake venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers has become, you might say, the Harvard of Silicon Valley VC firms (or at LEAST the Cornell), gained notoriety when his enormous metaphor oceanic vehicle was involved in mid-race tragedy. Per the Wall Street Journal:
Taos Brett IV almost cleared Mariette’s bow, avoiding a direct hit. But the schooner’s long bowsprit clipped the rigging on the port side of Taos Brett IV, and began carrying the smaller boat along—and then under Mariette’s bow. The rigging was one of the wires stay that supported Taos Brett IV’s mast and the wire failed to snap. Within two seconds, Taos Brett IV capsized, filled with water and sank. “We didn’t damage his boat—we just sank it,” Perkins recalled.
The doomed sailboat had five sailors aboard, three in the cockpit and two in the cabin who were packing a spinnaker for use in the race. The pair inside had no idea what was happening in the duel between Taos Brett IV and Mariette. One of those people—a fifty-year-old physician from Nice named Jacques Bourry—didn’t make it out alive. Horrified at the collision and Bourry’s drowning, Perkins immediately dropped out of the race, which was soon canceled anyway—as was the regatta itself, for several years, because of the tragedy. Perkins was so shaken he gave the helm over to his captain, Tom Eaton. Forty-five minutes later, after Mariette’s sails had been furled and stowed, Perkins was arrested by armed French authorities and charged with manslaughter
His ship, the Maltese Falcon, was “as long as a football field, forty-two feet wide, twenty feet deep, with three masts each soaring nearly twenty stories toward the heavens...If Darth Vader had an intergalactic yacht built for himself, this is what it would look like.”
http://valleywag.gawker.com/tom-perkins-de...
Years later, Perkins attempted to revitalize his image by comparing criticism of the 1% to the persecution and slaughter of Jews in Germany during the rise and reign of Nazism. Perkins is survived by the countless software businesses he and his partners have touched in recent decades.
Senate Republican Says She Might Vote For Clinton, But Probably Not, But Maybe
In response to Donald Trump’s racial attacks on Judge Gonzalo Curiel, GOP Senator Mark Kirk went so far as to un-endorse his party’s presumptive nominee this week, but another Senate Republican went even further on Thursday, suggesting she could vote for Hillary Clinton instead.
According to The New Yorker, Maine Senator Susan Collins told the magazine the upcoming election posed a “difficult choice” and she had to keep her options open:
Collins went on to say that she has not ruled out supporting Clinton. “I worked very well with Hillary when she was my colleague in the Senate and when she was Secretary of State,” Collins said. “But I do not anticipate voting for her this fall. I’m not going to say never, because this has been such an unpredictable situation, to say the least.”
I pressed Collins to make sure that she was leaving open the possibility of backing the Democratic Party’s presumptive Presidential nominee over Trump. “That is true,” Collins, who has been a lifelong Republican, said. “But I do want to qualify that by saying it is unlikely that I would choose to vote for the Democratic candidate.”
Collins, a moderate Republican who in the past has dissented from her party only to vote with them anyway, later reaffirmed her qualification, telling Fox News, “I do not anticipate voting for Hillary this fall.”
Still, that makes Collins quite a bit more flexible than party leaders like Paul Ryan, who has continued to support Trump even after condemning his comments as “absolutely unacceptable.” Ryan, it seems, is a man of his word, even if that word ends up being pretty racist
Elizabeth Warren Endorses Hillary Clinton, Suggests Openness to VP Role
On The Rachel Maddow Show Thursday night, Senator Elizabeth Warren endorsed presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and expressed her preparedness to serve as commander-in-chief if elected Vice President.
“I’m ready in this fight for Hillary Clinton to become the next President of the United States,” said Warren, “and to make sure that Donald Trump doesn’t get anyplace close to the White House.”
According to the Boston Globe, Warren already planned to publicly back Clinton next week, but rescheduled following President Obama’s endorsement

Asked by Maddow if she thought she was ready to serve as President in the event of a tragedy if chosen as Clinton’s running mate, Warren said simply, “I do.”
Noah Galvin and New York Magazine Actually Have One Thing to Hide
This morning, we received the rarest of gifts: a genuinely candid interview with a celebrity. Noah Galvin, the 22-year-old star of the ABC sitcom The Real O’Neals, spoke with E. Alex Jung of New York’s entertainment vertical Vulture about being a young, out gay actor in Hollywood. The story was headlined “Noah Galvin Has Nothing to Hide,” which turned out to be very much untrue.
At one point during the interview—as Jung and Galvin talked about the phenomenon of quasi-out industry types in Los Angeles—the discussion turned to Bryan Singer, the X-Men director who has long been rumored to be a major player in Hollywood’s clandestine gay scene. In 2014, Singer and several others were sued by a man who claimed he was raped by the director
Of Singer, Galvin said:
“Yeah. Bryan Singer likes to invite little boys over to his pool and diddle them in the f—ing dark of night. [Laughs.] I want nothing to do with that. I think there are enough boys in L.A. that are questionably homosexual who are willing to do things with the right person who can get them in the door. In New York there is a healthy gay community, and that doesn’t exist in L.A.”
To read that quote now, though, one has to go to another website—like, say, The Hollywood Reporter. If you scroll to the bottom of the Vulture interview you’ll see this note:
Editor’s note: This article originally contained a reference to Bryan Singer. In an interview format, we generally let the subject speak his mind. But this is a contentious issue, and after consideration, we decided to delete the reference. Noah Galvin has issued a statement.
That statement links to one released by Galvin tonight, in which he addresses his Singer-related gabbing:
I sincerely apologize to Bryan Singer for the horrible statement I made about him in the interview I gave to New York Magazine. My comments were false and unwarranted. It was irresponsible and stupid of me to make those allegations against Bryan, and I deeply regret doing so. I have never been to Bryan’s house, and I admit there is no basis for any of the things I said or implied about Bryan in that interview. I understand now that my statements were not at all funny and have serious implications. I am very sorry and I hope that Bryan and everyone else who read that interview can forgive me for my serious lapse in judgment. I have contacted New York Magazine and the other publications that republished my statements and asked them all to print this retraction and apology.
Galvin also apologized for things he said about the actor Colton Haynes—who coyly came out in an Entertainment Weekly article published last month—and Eric Stonestreet, the straight actor who plays the gay character Cam on (ABC’s) Modern Family. Yet those portions of the interview remain untouched. It’s unclear why exactly Vulture decided to take the rather extraordinary measure of deleting a celebrity’s already-published on-the-record answer to an interview question, but there are plenty of forces at play.
There is the possibility that Vulture considered what access it might lose by running such an allegation against a director who helms a billion-dollar film franchise. Or maybe Vulture retroactively decided that printing Galvin’s answer was simply in poor taste. A New York spokesperson said the magazine had nothing to say beyond its editor’s note. Marty Singer, Bryan Singer’s high-powered attorney, did not return a request for comment.
Whatever the case may be, all parties involved learned important lessons. The aggregation machine will extract and amplify any quote with a hint of controversy, regardless of the context. As for Galvin, being candid doesn’t pay in Hollywood, which, weirdly, was the point he was trying to make in the first place.
Hundreds Say Donald Trump Has a Problem Paying His Bills
On Thursday, USA Today and The Wall Street Journal released mammoth reports documenting Donald Trump’s alleged failures to pay his bills full. In hundreds of court filings from more than 30 states, the newspapers found businesses owners, contractors and employees who claimed Trump and his companies refused to pay what they owed.
According to USA Today, which focussed on Trump’s legal battles with “ordinary Americans,” 253 subcontractors, 48 waiters and dozens of bartenders have accused the presumptive Republican nominee’s companies of failing to pay them either on time or in full. Additionally, Trump’s companies have reportedly been cited 24 times for violating the Fair Labor Standards Act since 2005.
In an interview, Trump told the paper that underpayments were the result of poor work on the part of his hires.
“Let’s say that they do a job that’s not good, or a job that they didn’t finish, or a job that was way late. I’ll deduct from their contract, absolutely,” Trump told USA Today. “That’s what the country should be doing.”
The Wall Street Journal, however, found that payment disputes extended into his dealings with other businesses and were outside the norm even for the often combative construction business:
Mr. Trump’s withholding of payments stood out as particularly aggressive in the industry and in the broader business world, said some vendors who had trouble getting paid.
It is “a strong-arm tactic that is frowned on,” said Wayne Rivers, a small-business consultant in construction. The tactic is more common in Northeast construction than in other regions, he said, and is abnormal in much of American business.
“Part of how he did business as a philosophy was to negotiate the best price he could,” Jack O’Donnell, a former president of one of Trump’s casinos, told the Journal. “And then when it came time to pay the bills, [he’d say,] ‘I’m going to pay you but I’m going to pay you 75% of what we agreed to.’ ”
According to O’Donnell, such tactics made it difficult to do business and casino operators would pay suppliers in full against Trump’s wishes, infuriating him. Speaking to the Journal, Trump denied he had trouble paying his bills.
“I pay thousands of bills on time,” said Trump, dismissing claims to the contrary as “disgusting.”

Federal Court Rules Concealed Carry Law in California Unconstitutional
On Thursday, the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Americans do not have a constitutional right to carry concealed guns in public. “The 2nd Amendment may or may not protect to some degree a right of a member of the general public to carry a firearm in public,” Judge William A. Fletcher wrote for the majority. “If there is such a right, it is only a right to carry a firearm openly.”
The court upheld a state law, 7-4, that requires applicants for concealed carry permits to show “good cause” beyond a simple desire for safety. The NRA called the ruling “out of touch.”
“This decision will leave good people defenseless, as it completely ignores the fact that law-abiding Californians who reside in counties with hostile sheriffs will now have no means to carry a firearm outside the home for personal protection,” the group’s legislative chief, Chris W. Cox, said. The Associated Press reports:
Typically, people who are being stalked or threatened, celebrities who fear for their safety, and those who routinely carry large amounts of cash or other valuables are granted permits.
“We hold that the Second Amendment does not preserve or protect a right of a member of the general public to carry concealed firearms in public,” Circuit Judge William A. Fletcher wrote for the majority.
The ruling overturned a 2014 decision by a three-judge panel of the same court that said applicants need only express a desire for personal safety.
In a dissent, Circuit Judge Consuelo M. Callahan said the ruling “obliterates the Second Amendment’s right to bear a firearm in some manner in public for self-defense.”
“Those of us that want to carry concealed, we’re the good guys. We go through an incredible amount of background checks,” an Anaheim gun dealer, Timothy Smith, told the AP. “I’ve already been checked so many times. So we’re the good guys.”
Viral Hillary Meme Photo Raised Questions at State Department About Private Email Server
This week, the State Department disclosed that a record-keeping official in Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s office asked questions about the secretary’s email habits after seeing the viral “Texts from Hillary” meme photo in 2011, Politico reports.
The official, Clarence Finney, who oversaw an office responsible for Freedom of Information Act searches, had been told at the beginning of Clinton’s tenure that “like her predecessor, [Clinton] would not use an official account,” State Director of Executive Secretariat Staff Karin Lang testified in a deposition this week.
“When Mrs. Clinton’s photo appeared in the media with her using—appearing to use some sort of a mobile device, Clarence Finney checked with [information management staff] to confirm...whether the answer was still that she did not have a State.gov e-mail account,” Lang said. (That was indeed still the answer.)
Lang testified by court order in a FOIA lawsuit filed by Judicial Watch, a conservative group seeking records about top Clinton aide Huma Abedin. Lang was State’s appointed witness; Judicial Watch posted a transcription of her deposition on its website. From Politico:
Under questioning from Judicial Watch lawyer Michael Bekesha, Lang said the personnel in charge of searching for records in Clinton’s office were not aware during her tenure and for at least a year after she left that she used a private email account for work-related communications, even though dozens of senior officials corresponded with her at the private address.
“No one engaged in this FOIA search had awareness of that source of potentially responsive documents during the time period of this FOIA search,” Lang said. “They were not aware of the existence of e-mails from the former Secretary that could be potentially responsive to this request.”
“The email addresses that may be involved in those...potentially responsive documents would not necessarily be an item of attention of the reviewer, unless that was the specific topic,” Lang continued.
In May, the State Department’s Office of Inspector General released a report stating that the Office of the Secretary has avoided searching emails in response to FOIA requests, despite emails having been designated as federal records for the last twenty years.
The infamous photo of Secretary Clinton was taken on a military transport plane headed to Libya on October 18, 2011, just days after Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi’s fall. According to Representative Trey Gowdy, Benghazi Republican from South Carolina, Clinton has not disclosed any emails from that trip.
“There are huge gaps,” he told the New York Daily News last year. “It strains credibility to believe that if you’re on your way to Libya to discuss Libyan policy, that there’s not a single document that’s been turned over to Congress.”
Nevada Senate Candidate Accidentally Owns Opponent With Link to CartoonSex.com
Sharron Angle, a Republican running for U.S. Senate in Nevada this year, put a sick and very graphic burn on her opponent, Joe Heck, in a newsletter sent to voters this month. That’s because a URL that one might think leads to Mr. Heck’s campaign site instead redirects you to a page that, as far as I can tell, has very little to do with the three-term congressman’s pro-business conservative platform.
The mailer, which also appeared online, listed Heck’s website as www.joeheck.com. In fact, his website is www.drjoeheck.com. (The online version has since been corrected.) The former URL, for some reason, redirects to www.cartoonsex.com, a website that features—you guessed it—images of cartoons having sex with each other, and is obviously NSFW.
According to Whois information, www.joeheck.com was registered by a person named John Rashad, who has no apparent connection to either the Angle or the Heck campaigns. Speaking with Talking Points Memo, an Angle spokesman chalked the snafu up to a printing error, and stated that the “Angle campaign has, in no way, promoted the website.”
Heck’s campaign, however, is dubious. “The Sharron Angle campaign has been spreading misinformation to voters and unfortunately this is the latest, ridiculous, dirty trick,” a spokesperson told TPM.
Incidentally, this is far from the wackiest thing Angle has ever said or done on the campaign trail. In 2010, the candidate, who is not Asian, told a group of students that she has “been called the first Asian legislator in our Nevada State Assembly,” and questioned whether
Very cool candidate, all in all. We wish her the best of luck.
Texas Man and Small-Time Dick Insists He Actually Has a Huge Dick, Everyone
Welcome to Big Time Small-Time Dicks, a regular column on The Slot that explores local politicians, small-town scandals, and everything else making life miserable on a local level. Know a small time person who is a big time dick we should feature? Email us.
It’s not often that we have occasion to revisit a previous entrant into the Big Time Small-Time Dicks Hall of Fame, but today is a special day. Some time ago, we told you about Texas man Robert Morrow, elected as chair of the Travis County GOP despite the fact that much of the Travis County GOP can’t stand him. Today, he insists to Jezebel that his dick is—contrary to his misinterpretation of the name of this column—huge.
The war dividing Austin’s establishment Republicans was kicked into high gear back in March, when Morrow was elected chair of the Travis County Republican Party with 54 percent of the vote. That is a problem because Morrow, as we noted at the time, is a little nutty, an intensely ridiculous political conspiracy theorist pleading for attention with an endless stream of racist, sexist, homophobic, cheerfully vulgar tweets. His particular fixation right now is Hillary Clinton, of course:
Well, Hillary Clinton and hentai porn, that is.
The Travis County GOP wisely decided to do a little preemptive damage control before Morrow is sworn in as chairman for what promises to be a very long two years. On Wednesday, as the Austin-American Statesman reports, at the last meeting before his furious reign begins, they voted to keep the party’s cash and control of its social media accounts out of Morrow’s hands. That stuff will instead be handled by a committee that Morrow is not on. From the Statesman:
Joe Pojman, a precinct chairman who supported the plan, took the microphone and read tweets Morrow had posted during the meeting, including a cleaned-up version of a profanity-laced attack on former Gov. Rick Perry and a statement on what the party’s “top priority” will be when he is chairman: large female breasts.
The renewed attention has naturally invigorated Morrow, who seems to be doing a little vanity Googling. He came across the Big Time Small-Time Dicks story we penned about him months ago and became fixated on the name of the column, which he alleges is inaccurate in his case.
It is absolutely true that I do not have firsthand knowledge of Morrow’s penis, nor will I ever, due to my apparently unshakeable excess of self-respect and good judgment. That said, the name of the column is a figure of speech and not an invitation to launch loud, somewhat unconvincing counter-arguments.
Morrow also rates me a 5, which is fair.
The Austin Chronicle notes that Morrow will retain some very real administrative responsibilities: “filing state and federal reports, running the monthly meetings, approving candidates for the ballot, and certifying election results.” That should go great.

“Bank tellers, the single largest occupation within [the retail banking] category, have a median hourly wage of $12.44.” A 2014 report found that “nearly one-third of tellers’ families” were enrolled in public assistance programs.
Slack Down
Slack, a group chat and instant messaging program popular in tech and digital media workplaces, appears to be having a service outage. According to the service’s status website, the Slack website and API are down, due to an unexplained “resource exhaustion.” (We can relate!) This is the worst media news of the day.
For Real Don't Bother Michael Bloomberg About Talking to His Grandchild Until the Kid Learns to Golf
Breaking news from the only politics blog worth reading: celebritybabies.people.com

His daughter, famous horse girl and acquaintance of both Ivanka and Chelsea, Georgina Bloomberg, explains:
“I think he’ll definitely get more natural as Jasper gets older,” his daughter Georgina Bloomberg told PEOPLE at the GOOD+ Foundation‘s annual bash in Central Park Wednesday.
“I think when Jasper can play golf and have a conversation about current events, he’ll be a lot more interested,” Georgina adds of her dad, laughing. “For now, my mom is definitely the more doting grandparent, but once he’s older I think he’ll have a lot of great stories to tell and a lot of great lessons to pass on to Jasper.”
At this rate, Jasper will never catch up to Baron Trump. Sad.
Hillary Gives Refreshing Answer On Potential VP Pick
Hillary Clinton was visibly shocked today when a reporter asked her if she’d discussed the possibility of Elizabeth Warren serving as her vice president. But once her eyes settled back inside her head, she actually gave a cold, yet refreshing answer.
It’s a new world: Hillary actually responding
