The Flag Burning That Pretty Much Wasn't

The Flag Burning That Pretty Much Wasn't

CLEVELAND — Late on Wednesday afternoon, on the doorstep of the Republican National Convention, a small group of unassuming communists pulled black shirts out of their bags and over their heads, locked arms, and made a small, circular space for a flag burning.

A curl of smoke had barely reached eye level when police crashed through the human wall, spraying some kind of flame retardant at the burning flag and the man carrying it. Flag burning is protected speech, and police had not moved to disperse the gathered crowd until the flag was set alight.

The circle collapsed, and police wrestled protesters to the ground, putting knees in their backs and cuffs on their wrists. “Lock his Commie ass up,” a Trump supporter shouted as he fled the scrum. “Everything’s heating up,” intoned Vermin Supreme. “Everybody keep cool.”

Anarchists, black bandanas over their faces, slid between onlookers. An older lady in a brightly patterned dress accosted them. “I love you,” one said, pulling down his bandana to expose his cheek and pointing to it, asking for a kiss. The woman obliged.

Riot police ushered media and demonstrators away from the arena, towards a casino at the end of the street. “You media guys are worse than the protestors,” one Cleveland police officer said, after Gawker asked what a woman, handcuffed and sitting in the back of a police van, had been arrested for. “You get in the way, because you want to see what’s going on. But nothing’s happening, and you just make things worse.”

Donald Trump and Ted Cruz: A Love Story

$

0

Tonight, Ted Cruz will get onstage at the Republican National Convention and say nice things about Donald Trump, a man who spent the last year humiliating him, his family, and every thing he’s ever stood for.

It was an incredible ride—while it lasted. As Donald called his wife ugly, insinuated that his father murdered JFK and got a nation to call him “Lyin’ Ted,” Cruz mostly seethed and over-pronounced the word “henchmen.” At times it seemed his impotent fury would know no bounds. And then it was all over.

They say you always hurt the one you love; on the bright side, Cruz probably wrote his speech himself.

Rick Santorum Is a Coward

CLEVELAND — As we all know, the Kanye West/Taylor Swift “Famous” fiasco reached new heights on Monday when Kim Kardashian released footage of Swift signing off on the supposedly offending lyrics. And ever since, the entire country has been waiting with bated breath for Senator Rick Santorum to finally break his silence on the matter. However, as Gawker uncovered earlier today—Rick Santorum is a coward.

http://jezebel.com/kim-kardashian…

I approached Santorum inside the RNC arena, offering him a chance to put the nation’s troubled hearts and minds at ease. Instead, Rick Santorum shot back, “I am not team anything.... I’m no team.”

In which case, I am forced to conclude that, unfortunately, this includes that great big team we call the United States of America. Senator Santorum—you should be ashamed of yourself.

Video Shows Unarmed Black Man Pleading With Arms Raised Before Getting Shot by Police

On Wednesday, WSVN aired a cell phone video reportedly taken moments before caregiver Charles Kinsey was shot by North Miami police. In it, Kinsey, who survived, can be seen lying on the ground with his hands raised, explaining that he and the autistic man he was assisting are unarmed.

“I thought it was a mosquito bite, and when it hit me I had my hands in the air, and I’m thinking I just got shot!” Kinsey told WSVN. “And I’m saying, ‘Sir, why did you shoot me?’ and his words to me were, ‘I don’t know.’”

According to police, officers were dispatched to the scene of the shooting on Monday after getting a 911 call about a man with a gun threatening suicide.

“Arriving officers attempted to negotiate with two men on the scene, one of whom was later identified as suffering from autism,” said North Miami Police in a statement. “At some point during the on-scene negotiation, one of the responding officers discharged his weapon, striking the employee.”

According to WPLG, police later said the autistic man “had something in his hand.” In the video, Kinsey can be heard identifying the object as a toy truck.

After shooting him, Kinsey says police put him in handcuffs.

North Miami Police say the officer who shot Kinsey has been placed on administrative leave, but have not released the officer’s name or said if he will face any charges.

On Wednesday, Ted Cruz had the worst night of his life—and Donald Trump made sure of it.

During his speech at the Republican National Convention, the Trump team reportedly encouraged supporters who booed him and chanted “ENDORSE TRUMP.” Even worse, Trump himself entered the arena while Cruz still on stage, causing C-SPAN and other networks to cut away before his defeated rival was finished speaking. Oh, also:

It almost makes you feel sorry for the guy. Almost.

After tonight’s nightmare set of RNC speeches, someone apparently decided that the best way to top off the night would be to have Chris Matthews sit down with Saturday Night Live’s Michael Che and Colin Jost to talk about about black people. Welcome to our modern hell.

“You are so funny,” Matthews beams to Che.

Sure, that’s fine. Everything’s okay.

“What do you think, funniest guy?”

This is fine. Just don’t—

“Funniest black guy?”

Goddammit.

We have no one to blame for this terrible convention but ourselves.

Why Don't You Ride the Bus?

The city of New York is concerned: bus ridership has been declining for years, even as subway use has been rising. Hey, why don’t you ride the bus?

  • It’s so slow.
  • Where does this bus even go? I seriously have no idea.

Another thought I had on the bus one time: sell snacks on the bus. People like snacks and I think you will see that reflected in “the numbers.”

Why don’t you ride the bus?

Laura Ingraham Elects to Ignore That Nazi Salute She Did

CLEVELAND- Conservative talk radio host Laura Ingraham bounded onstage Thursday night to urge everyone to vote for Donald Trump. She also did a big ol’ straight-armed wave that, as everyone on the internet pointed out, looked like she was saying an enthused, “Hi” to Hitler. She’s electing not to address that second thing this morning. Probably wise!

Ingraham wants everybody to vote for Donald Trump, no matter how they feel about him: “We should all — even you boys with wounded feelings and bruised egos — we love you, but you must honor your pledge to support Donald Trump now,” she told the crowd. “Tonight.”

She closed her remarks by doing... that. That thing you see above. She quickly corrected it and bent her arm, but the optics were not great.

This morning, Ingraham accepted congratulations from her fanbase, whoever they are, bashed Ted Cruz a bit for not liking Donald more, and generally pretended like she did not do that thing she did.

This election is a study in how far you can take disturbing absurdities before they stop being funny.

Gawker Goes to a Punk Show

CLEVELAND — On Wednesday night, as Senator Ted Cruz provided the Republican National Convention with its first true spectacle of the week, Cleveland’s punks gathered at Now That’s Class, a dive bar on the city’s west side, to vent their frustration. Vermin Supreme was in attendance, though he did not throw down in the pit.

The front man for the second band, Shirime, a Cleveland band now based in New York, was initially upset with the crowd’s energy. “Are you tired from protesting? Do you need to rest?” he sneered. “I feel like I’m in Williamsburg,” he continued, crossing his arms and frowning. Not wanting to be associated with Williamsburg, several more members of the audience threw themselves into the mosh pit.

Later, during Diva Cup’s set, a fragment of firecracker thrown at the ground and kicked up by a Doc Martin (probably) hit a Gawker correspondent in the face. It was awesome.

The Words That Emerge From Donald Trump's Mouth Seem to Bear Little Relation to the Reality in Which We Live

The Words That Emerge From Donald Trump's Mouth Seem to Bear Little Relation to the Reality in Which We Live

Native English speaker Donald Trump has given yet another interview to the New York Times. He would be better off not speaking, considering the sentences he forms of his own free will.

The headline of the Times story that came out of this interview was “Donald Trump Sets Conditions for Defending NATO Allies From Attack.” Based upon a full reading of the interview transcript, though, a headline that more fully captures the totality of Trump’s statements might be “Donald Trump: Alladlighfghfughflukshgfluhglujhfjknf.”

It is worth noting, by the way, that Trump clearly went on and off the record during the course of the interview, presumably with the consent of the Times reporters interviewing him, David Sanger and Maggie Haberman. The transcript is dotted with ellipses that likely indicate the points at which Trump went off the record. For example:

TRUMP: No. I came away with a lot of knowledge. I respect both men…

SANGER: Tell us how you’d capitalize on that. On the record, tell us how, in the case with Mexico.

I wonder what Donald Trump said in his excursions off the record??? I guess we’ll never know.

The good news is Trump said many other valuable things that serve as powerful examples of his fitness for the Presidency of the United States.

On NAFTA

David, I have statisticians, and I know, like if I went to Pennsylvania, I say, “Give me the statistics on what is going on with respect to manufacturing.” Numbers — 45, 55, 65, I have states that are so bad. New England.

On His Friend Who Builds Plants

I have a friend who builds plants, that’s what he does, he’s the biggest in the world, he builds plants like automobile plants, computer plants, that’s all he does. He doesn’t build apartments, he doesn’t build office space, he builds plants. I said to him the other day, “How are you doing?” He goes, “Unbelievable.” Oh, great, that’s good, thinking about the United States, right, because he’s based in the United States. So I said, “Good, so the country is doing well.” He said, “No, no, not our country, you’ve got to see what I’m doing in Mexico.” He said: “The business there is unbelievable, the new plants we are building. People moving from the United States.” That’s what he does. One-story plants. You understand?

On Cyber

SANGER: We’re under regular cyberattack. Would you use cyberweapons before you used military force?

TRUMP: Cyber is absolutely a thing of the future and the present. Look, we’re under cyberattack, forget about them. And we don’t even know where it’s coming from.

SANGER: Some days we do, and some days we don’t.

TRUMP: Because we’re obsolete. Right now, Russia and China in particular and other places.

SANGER: Would you support the United States’ not only developing as we are but fielding cyberweapons as an alternative?

TRUMP: Yes. I am a fan of the future, and cyber is the future.

On Optimism

HABERMAN: What do you think people will take away from this convention? What are you hoping?

TRUMP: From the convention? The fact that I’m very well liked.

This November, cast your vote for the guy who said all this stuff.

Donald Trump and Ted Cruz Both Got Exactly What They Wanted

Donald Trump and Ted Cruz Both Got Exactly What They Wanted

CLEVELAND — Two southern delegates discussed Ted Cruz’s speech last night in the slow-moving cattle drive toward the security perimeter exit outside Quicken Loans Arena last night.

“Ted’s speech was one of the greatest speeches I’ve ever heard,” said one.

“Until it wasn’t,” said the other.

“Until it wasn’t,” the first agreed.

Oddly, almost everyone in attendance had expected Senator Ted Cruz to actually endorse Donald Trump, despite it being widely reported beforehand that he didn’t intend to. (Though I suppose plenty of “widely reported” news doesn’t make it through the filter bubble in which your average Republican delegate resides.)

“To the very final moment I was hoping he would make the endorsement,” Virginia state Senator Dick Black (yes, that one), a former Cruz campaign co-chairman, told me earlier in the evening, in the middle of Mike Pence’s boring, endless speech. Behind me, an AP reporter asked a delegate what he thought of Cruz’s speech, and the delegate began loudly clucking like a chicken, to indicate that he thought Cruz had been, you know, a chicken. (She asked him to please try again, using words she could write down.)

This was a crowd that wanted Cruz to demean himself and pay fealty to a man who really, really treated him like absolute shit, probably planted rumors of an affair, and branded him a liar to a national audience. For attendees, all of that should be water under the bridge—even Little Marco did his little video, after all—though I can’t figure out how anyone who has ever paid much attention to how Cruz operates would have ever expected him to show up and join the long line of losers going on stage this week to eat shit and endorse that purse-lipped second-rate would-be Berlusconi.

Certainly Trump’s camp didn’t actually expect him to! What was obvious to everyone but, perhaps, those on the floor, was how manufactured the entire moment was, by both sides. Cruz purposefully avoided endorsing Trump knowing full well that an arena mostly full of Trump supporters would be pissed. Trump purposefully arrived in the arena midway through Cruz’s speech, and stood, glowering at him, as the endorsement pointedly didn’t come. Trump’s team reportedly even whipped up the boos.

But if the reaction was perhaps a bit more heated than Cruz expected, it was still exactly what he wanted: To once again be the lone, brave voice of liberty, standing up to those who seek to betray the principles of conservatism. And when Trump loses in November—which he will—many of those who booed tonight will rewrite their own memories to place themselves on his side.

This was another self-mythologizing moment for the deluded, messianic Cruz, who is currently LARPing as Ronald Reagan in 1976. But he really will emerge from this disaster as the most high-profile right-wing dissenter, and despite his general odiousness, that might actually be enough to propel him to the nomination in 2020, against whatever theoretically appealing young governor the GOP establishment will try to prop up. That whole speech you forgot about, before the booing? With the usual right-wing bromides and terror-humping, delivered with Cruz’s patented self-satisfaction? The crowd loved it. Until they didn’t.

Last night’s real winner, though, was the press. For journalists, if not delegates, the whole thing was a change of pace. This whole week has been about waiting for a little action. The widely predicted apocalyptic clashes between protesters and the massive cop army have thus far failed to happen. The floor rebellion was quashed and quickly forgotten. Instead of Don King and bizarre sports celebrities, we got minor soap actors and a multilevel marketing scam artist. Instead of punches, we got plagiarism. No actually effective fascist, one might think, would have programmed such a boring lineup of prime-time speakers.

But this was the first moment where Donald Trump’s supposed television instincts actually appeared to be working. He scheduled a villain—Ted Cruz is not at the Republican National Convention to make friends—to create some drama. Of course, Trump’s love of drama may have slightly sabotaged the GOP’s efforts to actually win a presidential election. The Republican nominee for the vice presidency (a man the presidential nominee seems have no interest in or ability to interact with), also spoke last night, though you wouldn’t know it from watching or reading the news today.

Slate videographer Aymann Ismail, who is a practicing Muslim, confronted a bunch of doofuses in tric
