Everyone Is Naming Their Baby "Elsa" Now, Because of Frozen

Which Disney princess are you named after? If you were born in the last year, there's a good chance it's Elsa.

A report from BabyCentre shows that since the release of Frozen, the name "Elsa"—the movie's ice queen, duh—has jumped 243 spots in girls' name rankings, and now sits at number 88 in the top 100. Sarah Barrett, Managing Editor of BabyCentre, offers her thoughts on why:

"Whilst the film's popular heroine is called Anna, Elsa offers a more unique name and is also a strong female role model. Elsa is the ice queen but she sees the error of her ways and is shown to be a sensitive, but strong and confident character. Just in the way the name Arya from Game of Thrones increased in popularity in 2013, films are hugely influential."

Anna Hill, Vice President of Disney UK gave her thoughts to BabyCentre, as well:

"We're delighted that Elsa is a popular name for babies and it's lovely to hear that for many families, it is actually their siblings who have chosen it. We've been bowled over by the response to Frozen - it's now the fifth biggest film of all time and families are really connecting with Elsa's fight to overcome her fears and the powerful strength of the family bond which has helped her to achieve this."

"My mom named me after Game of Thrones. What did your parents name you after?"

"Frozen."

"Oh, cool."

"I guess."

Just Before the Stop Signs Break

If you walk down the avenue fast enough, you might think that today is an ordinary Easter Sunday, filled with joyous laughter and terrible church music. But if you are an observant individual who enjoys slow strides along the Brooklyn promenade, you may hear my friend Dolores's shrieks coming from the blue-fenced yellow house on the corner.

If you are coming to our house from the left side of the hill, the one that separates Tutor Avenue and Strawberry Street, you can see Dolores and my Uncle Wayne naked in the purple-painted bedroom from the back window of our house. Dolores and I are 16 and we have been friends for most of our life. You will first see the hairs on Dolores's scaly white skin sticking up and out like the needles of a cactus. If you are coming to our house from the right side of the hill, the one that separates Tutor Avenue and Peabody Lane, you can see my Uncle Wayne's powerhouse body, long legs accompanied by a broad set of shoulders and thick, sculpted biceps.

My uncle is sitting next to Dolores, biting the rough patches of eczema on the left side of her neck. Her thin, angular body is dotted with sun freckles, the ones that typically appear pink in bright light. Her breasts are full and round, supple as they spill into his firm-grasped hands.

It's hard for me to focus, considering today is a day of prayer. It's hard for me to focus any day of the week Dolores is home, but today is the one day she promised to let me get ready for church in peace. She lied, and she is with him inside my room.

Outside that room, I am waiting. My skin is cracked and rough, similar to the texture of an old, gnarled tree trunk because Dolores took my lotion. She said she was just borrowing it. She says this every time my uncle comes over. When he leaves, I buy a new bottle of lotion that I wait for her to borrow and never return. My hair is frizzed and sticky, similar to the texture of a used, wet Brillo-Pad. I tell myself all I need is a shower to distract myself from scrutinizing the way my skin doesn't gloss over like Dolores's.

Dolores emerges from my bedroom, her reddened cheeks reminiscent of the lipstick color I used to buy. If you didn't know her any better you might mistake her for an innocent, embarrassed girl, but I know she is just giddy from hours of penetration. Her wire-like arms remind me of snakes, hard in their unforgiving bed. She laughs at the way the tight-fitted brown dress I purchased hugs my body. Dolores heads toward the bedroom again, her bodily fluids staining my comforter.

"The pink shirt is my favorite," he whispers to her while softly clapping. "Put it in on again."

"I don't like the pink one," Dolores rolls her eyes as she rummages through more of my clothing. She understands her privilege as the favored friend, the friend whose pink skin and tiny bones can thaw every frostbitten part of his body.

"The pink one," he says as his body juts upward, knocking the rocking chair my mother gave me behind him. "Just put it on, Dolores."

I hate him.

You would hate the way his words fall together too, chipped and broken like Dolores's teeth after he hit her that one Sunday afternoon. I covered Dolores up nicely with some unused, cheap makeup.

I walk out of the house, slamming the door behind me. Our yellow house has become more dilapidated throughout the years, and my neighbors are beginning to wonder why my family hasn't begun renovations. I want to tell them it is because of the money, but I know that would be a lie.

Sitting on the bench, looking at the budding wisterias mom started to plant, I wonder if she will be back in time to make Easter dinner. I wonder if she will even remember it is Easter. I collect the mail and walk back into the house. Dolores is dressed in my favorite black, polka-dotted jumper. She looks like one of those models one would see in a Victoria's Secret store. She's white, pretty, and wanted; her skin and body are not cloudy like mine. Growing up, mom always used to tell me I was no different from the boys and girls with white skin on Tutor Avenue. But now as I look towards the sky and balcony, it is alarmingly clear how much she has lied to me.

"Get out of my dress," I say, raising my pathetic index finger. "Get the fuck out of my dress and out of my house."

I run towards her and pull her hair. But I feel someone grab me by the back of my neck, forcing me to the floor.

"I said go down," my uncle says as he holds my arms and shakes my head. "And what do you think you are doing?"

"Let me go, Uncle Wayne," I bite the hand covering my mouth and he slaps my face.

"Little nigger girl is upset," he says. "She wants some attention too."

He punches me in the mouth one final time. I stay still on the floor watching Dolores lean on the couch.

I think of the way Dolores's family greeted me when I came to her house to make cupcakes. Her mother, Sandra, always left the kitchen smelling like sautéed onions, black beans, and baked jalapenos. I remember the days she would ride her bicycle around the pathway outlining the park near the old baseball field, a piece of green chalk in her left hand. Our parents would take us to the swimming pool near the kiddy swings, as we watched the tiny feet of children accelerate through the air.

It wasn't until Dolores's father passed away that I began noticing the subtle shifts in her demeanor. Dolores's family prided themselves on being outstanding American citizens, especially her father. Her parents made sure Dolores and her siblings were physically and emotionally well-equipped but their support turned into control. After my 16th birthday party, the party where she first met my uncle, I knew I would never again see the Dolores who rang my doorbell asking me to braid her hair like the mermaids she saw on television.

It is Easter Sunday and I am home with two human beings: one who is supposed to be my best friend, the other who is supposed to be my uncle.

I try to tell the voices in my head that he is not a bad man. The voices in my head are angry, they tell me I have been a bad person for not telling mom what my uncle and Dolores do. I wanted to tell mom, really, but I wasn't sure if it was necessarily a bad thing that Dolores wanted to have sex with my uncle. My own mother always told me that age is just a number.

Uncle Wayne didn't start developing feeling for my friends, the ones that could potentially be his children that is, until after I turned 16. I can remember the way he would talk about my white female friends, drooling over the ones who had fine, straight strands of hair and big blue eyes to complement them.

"It's the way they are," he said as he read his newspaper. "The way they look against the light. "

"What?" I asked, biting my bottom lip.

"You just don't get it." The volume in his voice raised and his eyebrows furrowed. "You'll never get it."

I never understood why white girls were favored by my Uncle Wayne. I desperately wanted to know the answer, but it seemed each time I would try to pry a little further into my uncle's box of hidden truths, he would love me less and less. After his wife divorced him, he thirsted for women who were often much younger than him. He loved to comment on which one of my physically developing friends he thought would turn out to be the prettiest. He always chose the friends of mine who were white with blonde hair.

"What's wrong with ones with darker skin?" I asked him, nervously awaiting his response.

"Nothing wrong with them" he said. "Nothing is particularly right with them either."

Uncle Wayne collects stop signs and hangs up in our basement to make him feel powerful. The police would often knock on our door asking if we were aware of the acts of vandalism pertaining to the missing road signs in our town, but mom always shrugged off their questions with soft, "I didn't notice anything" statements.

It is 5:00 p.m. and mom should be arriving soon. Our neighbors, the Vernons, saw something they weren't supposed to see and they called the police.

Dolores and my uncle are fully dressed. They make their way onto the back porch. Dolores begins to cry as the puffs of his cigar sting her eyes. Uncle Wayne looks tired, ready to fly back to Arizona, where I imagine him having sex with more white, innocent 16-year-old girls. Dolores will go back to her home, call me crying on a Wednesday afternoon because that is her favorite day of the week, and tell me that I should have stopped my uncle from raping her. Today, though, you will soon see me crying, my hands bloody with guilt and shame. You will see the braids in my hair come undone like the strands of the dress. You will see Dolores's mother Sandra spewing angry phrases at my mom again, who has pretended to know nothing about her brother all these years, as she collects Dolores's things from my bedroom.

The police officers on Tutor Avenue have shiny red guns that they use to fire cotton candy for the children on Easter Sunday. When I was a small girl, I would have dreams that one of the police officers would surprise me by putting a shiny red gun in my mailbox as a birthday gift for being a polite pedestrian. Today, these police officers will arrive equipped with both the red guns and the real ones, and I pray no one hears a gun shot too loud before suppertime.

You can hear my uncle rattling off lies to tell the police. Dolores's face is as bright as the Vernon's Easter cherry pie they always offer to my cousins. The police cars pull up in front of our sad, yellow house. You can see Mom start to cry. You can see Uncle Wayne running across Tutor Avenue, the bigger police car chasing him with their armed anger.

We are all out tonight, this Easter afternoon, and the space between our lives grows bigger and smaller as each teardrop reaches the cement. I am looking at a particular cloud while Dolores is weeping and her step-father looks like he's going to light my house on fire. You can see the stained pages of this day littered with sunken ships and quivering lips. Before mom's blackout, you can see me clutching the skin on my hips — my fingers are stretching, reaching for some kind of reconciliation.

R&B Singer-Songwriter Bobby Womack Dead at 70

Bobby Womack, influential R&B singer-songwriter with a career that spanned six decades, died on Friday, his publicist says. He had performed earlier this month at the Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee.

As the Associated Press reports, Womack was born in Cleveland, Ohio and spent his youth singing gospel with his brothers in a group called Curtis Womack and The Womack Brothers. Through the influence of recording artist Sam Cooke, who signed The Womack Brothers to his label, Bobby Womack became interested in secular music. His first hit with the Womack Brothers—after they changed their name to The Valentinos—was "It's All Over Now," which was famously covered by The Rolling Stones.

From the obituary of Bobby Womack in Rolling Stone:

Three months after the death of Cooke in 1964, Womack married Cooke's widow, Barbara Campbell, and the Valentinos disbanded after the collapse of SAR Records. After leaving the group, Womack became a session musician, playing guitar on several albums, including Aretha Franklin's landmark Lady Soul, before releasing his debut album, Fly Me to the Moon, in 1968. A string of successful R&B albums would follow, including Understanding and Across 110th Street, both released in 1972, 1973's Facts of Life and 1974's Lookin for a Love Again.

Womack had a challenging last few years, being diagnosed with Alzheimer's two years earlier, and overcoming drug addiction. According to the Associated Press, Womack struggled with and beat both prostate and colon cancer in his life.

Womack's publicist did not reveal the cause of his death. The singer-songwriter was working on an album for XL Recordings when he died, which reportedly featured contributions by Stevie Wonder, Rod Stewart, and Snoop Dogg.

Cool Dude Buys Hundreds of Transformers Tickets to Impress Ex

A man in Beijing recently bought hundreds of tickets to IMAX screenings of Transformers: Age of Extinction in order to show his ex-girlfriend what she's missing. (She's missing a a very cool dude!)

According to The South China Morning Post, the man's ex-girlfriend broke up with him and moved from their home city of Nanjing to Beijing after he couldn't afford to take her to the movies. (Right.) Now, seven years later, after acquiring some wealth through running a company in Shanghai, he's showing her just how many tickets he can buy!

Now, after seven years of resentment, Wang has spent a quarter of a million yuan (HK$314,000) on hundreds of the cinema tickets, which he is giving away for free on the internet in order to show off his newfound wealth.

He said on his Weibo blog that after "striving hard for seven years", running his own company in Shanghai, he was finally able to afford to book all of the seats in four of the six IMAX theatres in Beijing for this Friday's showing of Transformers: Age of Extinction, to show his ex-partner what she was missing.

He said he would give the tickets away to anyone who shared his blog post, in the hope that the news would spread to his ex-girlfriend. He wrote, according to the Morning Post:

"I only want to say that you might have been wrong when you made that decision."

See! He's reasonable! He posted copies of his receipts online confirming that the tickets cost 250,000 yuan, which he claims is half his monthly income. As of Thursday, his post had been shared over 110,000 times.

Two Buildings Collapse In India, Killing At Least 11, Trapping Dozens

A building in New Delhi, India, as well as a building in the southern city of Chennai, collapsed within hours of each other on Saturday, killing at least 11. Authorities fear that dozens more are trapped in the wreckage of both buildings.

According to a report in the Associated Press, the New Delhi building was over 50 years old and located in a poorer section of the city. The 12-story building on the outskirts of Chennai was under construction at the time and collapsed only hours later.

Via the AP:

Most homes in the New Delhi area where the first building collapsed had been built without permission and using substandard materials, police officer Madhur Verma said.

The Press Trust of India news agency said the New Delhi collapse was triggered by construction work on an adjacent plot.

This story is still developing and will be updated as more information comes to light.

Argentine Vice President Charged In Abuse of Power Corruption Case

The vice president of Argentina, Amado Boudou, has formally been charged in a corruption scandal where it is alleged that Boudou abused his power as economy minister to assure that a company he allegedly controlled was given the contract to print Argentine currency.

The case began earlier this month when Boudou was questioned for seven hours in a closed-door inquisition by a judge. There have been calls for Boudou to step down, but he denies the allegations and has not made any motions to leave his position.

Via the BBC:

The case involves the Ciccone Calcografica printing company that has been under investigation for more than three years.

Mr Boudou is suspected of using a front man to buy the company when it filed for bankruptcy in 2010.

The company later received tax breaks to pay its debts.

If convicted in the case, Boudou could face up to six years in prison. He is currently free while he awaits trial.

If you are in the market for a new couch, Craigslist is home to a new gem. Verified heinous self-important asshole Joe Francis is selling his slate grey four-piece sectional couch on the Los Angeles community for-sale board. It has lived in his office for five years but it is in good shape.

It looks relatively clean, all things considered, and if anything it probably carries with it a rich history. After all, it is "HIGH END." (Emphasis theirs.)

It was originally pursed for $20,000 and has been marked down to $6,000 (OBO), which is a remarkable decrease in price. Here's another angle for your consideration:

High Risk of a Tropical System Developing off the East Coast This Week

High Risk of a Tropical System Developing off the East Coast This Week

Right on schedule, the Atlantic hurricane season looks like it may produce the year's first tropical system off the southeastern coast of the United States this week. The National Hurricane Center gives the system a high 60% chance of developing over the next five days.

The system is pictured in the satellite image above taken on Saturday afternoon, showing a disorganized cluster of showers and thunderstorms hanging a few dozen miles off the coast. The area is conducive to the system's development into a tropical cyclone, which will attain the name Arthur if it develops into a tropical storm.

The ultimate questions are "what will it do?" and "where will it go?"

The three main ingredients tropical cyclones need are warm sea-surface temperatures, low winds, and ample moisture, and we have all three, so we know there's at least a chance that it will develop into a tropical depression or even a storm by next week.

Jet Stream

Tropical systems (depressions, storms, and hurricanes) all hate wind shear. If the winds are too strong, especially at the upper-levels, the wind will rip the tops off of the thunderstorms and kill the system. Taking a look at the predicted jet stream over the next couple of days will give us a good idea of how much of an impact wind shear will have on the system.

High Risk of a Tropical System Developing off the East Coast This Week

The jet stream is denoted by the shaded colors, with warmer colors indicating faster wind speeds. The southeastern United States is practically untouched by the jet stream on Tuesday morning, pictured above, falling under what's known as a "ridge," or an area of higher pressure conducive to calm weather. If the storm continues to develop, it will run into no problems with wind shear through at least Thursday.

Moisture

It sounds silly to even have to say it, but tropical systems need ample moisture to form. Dry air spells death for a hurricane. A hurricane in dry air is a fish out of water or one of the Mafia's friends at the bottom of the Hudson.

When we look at water vapor satellite imagery, it's measuring the moisture in the air around 10,000 feet up. That roughly corresponds to the 700 millibar (mb) pressure level in the atmosphere, so looking at moisture on the 700 mb charts will give you a good idea of what kind of moisture a system will have to work with.

High Risk of a Tropical System Developing off the East Coast This Week

Warmer colors equate to higher humidity, and the system will have moisture to work with through next week. The only issue that could hamper its development could be that ribbon of dry air the GFS model is trying to wrap into the system, but we'll see what happens as we get closer.

Sea-Surface Temperatures

High Risk of a Tropical System Developing off the East Coast This Week

Sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) are crucial for the development of a tropical system. Generally, the warmer the better, and temperatures above 80°F (26°C) are best for development and strengthening. Water temperatures off the coast of the southeast range from between 80°F to 85°F, so the system will have plenty of energy to work with as it lingers in the area this week. The only problem it could run into is that if it churns up the water too much, it could cause upwelling of cooler water and lower SSTs.

Where Will It Go?

The biggest question the public has when tropical cyclones threaten is "where will it go?" Well, it's not really going to go anywhere. Not in a hurry, anyway. As the system is expected to slowly develop under a ridge with not much in the way of systems to move it along, it's expected to "drift southward over the next few days," as the National Hurricane Center put it. The ultimate direction of the system depends on how much it strengthens, so anyone along the east coast needs to keep an eye on it, especially so for those who live in the southeast.

That's not the uncertain answer anyone wants to hear, but meteorology is the science of playing the "what if" game. It's essentially chaos theory — if one little thing changes tomorrow, it could dramatically alter the future of the system.

The National Hurricane Center issues tropical weather forecasts every six hours, and every three hours if/when the storm forms since it's so close to land. It should be interesting to watch as we go into this week. Pay attention to the forecasts and make preparations now just in case.

The UK Is Low On Sperm

Bad news, unborn British children: you might be staying unborn forever. Sperm banks in the United Kingdom are reporting that there have been markedly fewer donations to sperm banks since donors' right to anonymity was taken away in in 2005.

According to BBC, the UK is facing "a major sperm shortage," a shortage so bad that sperm banks are having to import sperm from other countries, primarily the United States and Denmark. Does this mean that a percentage of children born in the UK in the future are actually American?

Via the BBC:

Figures from the fertility regulator, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), show nearly one in four donated sperm samples are from abroad.

The figure was one in 10 in 2005.

Doctors are starting to worry that the lack of sperm will cause sperm banks to set lower standards for the stuff that makes it through the door. Dr. Allan Pacey of the British Fertility Society said this could result in women having to use "more invasive and expensive" techniques for insemination.

Kansas Woman Charged With Arson After Trying to Light A Spider on Fire

A woman in Kansas is facing an arson charge after doing what anyone would after catching a spider in his or her home: lighting a small fire with towels in order to catch the spider in the fire and kill it.

According to the Hutchinson News, five fire department units were called out at 1:36AM after the 34-year-old woman, named Ginny M. Griffith, used a cigarette lighter to light a pile of towels on fire in an attempt to catch and kill the (nightmare) spider. From Hutchinson News:

Deputy Fire Chief Doug Hanen said in a press release that firefighters found light smoke coming from the woman's half of the duplex and some clothing smoldering just inside the doorway. They found multiple other points of origin for the fire and brought it under control within minutes, Hanen said.

No one was injured and the building only suffered light smoke damage, but because the other half of the duplex was occupied—and firefighters found multiple points of origin for the fire—Griffith was arrested for aggravated arson.

Griffith was held in the, fingers crossed, spider-free Reno County jail in lieu of the $7,500 bond.

Greg Kelly, son of former NYPD police chief Ray Kelly, proved what a dirtbag he is on Thursday when, as FOX reporter Anna Gilligan rode a zip-line at a new water park in New Jersey, Kelly couldn't keep his comments about Gilligan's body to himself.

"In a two-piece!" Kelly begins as Gilligan takes off her cover-up to get on the zip-line. "Like a movie!" he then exclaims.

"First of all, nice bathing suit," is the first thing Kelly utters to Gilligan as she is given her earpiece and a microphone after emerging from the pool. You can hear his co-anchor Rosanna Scotto attempt to cut him off. "Stay appropriate," she says.

When Gilligan keeps things professional, sharing the other activities she'll be participating in at New Jersey's Action Park, she remarks that she first must go put some clothes on.

"Not so fast!" Kelly responds. When Kelly tries to stall Gilligan from getting dressed, the savvy cameraman turns the camera back onto the pool and away from the female reporter. "Oh, wait a second!" he says, looking disappointed.

In a particularly disgusting ending moment, Kelly says to his co-anchor Scotto "Oh, relax" after she rightfully demands, "What is wrong with you?"

To end the whole shitshow, Kelly swats at Scotto: "Don't be so frowning at me!"

As the Daily Intelligencer notes, "In 2012, a woman accused Kelly of raping her when she was drunk, though the Manhattan D.A. ultimately decided not to press charges against him."

Philadelphia Child Killed By Falling Metal Gate At Water Ice Shop

A three-year-old girl was killed Saturday in north Philadelphia when a metal gate that was attached to the storefront of a Rita's Water Ice reportedly detached and fell on her during a charity event.

No one at the store, located in the Brewerytown section of the city, knew how the gate fell. A witness said that when the gate collapsed on the girl, it took 20 or 30 men to pull it off of her. Investigators are looking into safety at the shop.

Via the Associated Press:

The girl was at the Rita's Water Ice store in north Philadelphia where a fundraiser for a sorority and fraternity was underway when she was killed around 4:30 p.m., police and witnesses said.

Members of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity rushed to the girl's aid to get her out from under the awning and give her CPR, witnesses said. The girl was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital and died after arrival.

According to an official at the Department of Licenses and Inspections, the store was not in current violation of any codes and the gate's security was not previously in question.

A spokeswoman for Rita's, Linda Duke, told the AP: "Our hearts and prayers go out to the child's family. Due to the current investigation we really cannot comment about the unfortunate incident."

A witness told The Philly Inquirer that the shop had just done some stucco work on the storefront.

NASA Declares Test on Mars Travel Technology a Success

NASA completed a $150 million experiment on Saturday to test new technology that will bring spacecraft, and eventually astronauts, to Mars. Though the parachute got tangled on the way down, the experiment was declared a success.

According to the AP, the experiment is the first of three involving the Low Density Supersonic Decelerator vehicle. Here's an explanation of the procedure—which was conducted at a high altitude on Earth, to mimic descent through the atmosphere on Mars—from the AP:

A balloon hauled the saucer-shaped craft 120,000 feet into the sky from a Navy missile range on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. Then, the craft's own rocket boosted it to more than 30 miles high at supersonic speeds.

As the craft prepared to fall back to earth, a doughnut-shaped tube around it expanded like a Hawaiian puffer fish, creating atmospheric drag to dramatically slow it down from Mach 4, or four times the speed of sound.

Then the parachute unfurled - but only partially. The vehicle made a hard landing in the Pacific Ocean.

NASA engineer Dan Coatta told the AP that engineers are looking at the parachute mishap as a way to "learn more and apply that knowledge during future tests," rather than a problem. (A good way to look at all of our own probl—ah, learning experiences!) He continued:

In a way, that's a more valuable experience for us than if everything had gone exactly according to plan.

A ship was then sent to recover from the parachute a black box with a GPS beacon containing flight data that "scientists are eager to analyze."

Utah Mountain Lion Hangs Out At Shopping Mall, Is Tranquilized and Dies

A mountain lion who went roaming around a shopping mall parking lot in Sandy, Utah on Friday was shot with a tranquilizer gun to subdue it from attacking customers. The Salt Lake Tribune is reporting that the mall-crazy mountain lion has now died from the tranquilization.

According to eyewitness reports, the mountain lion was roaming freely in the parking lot of the Jordan Commons Mall. Witnesses initially thought the lion was a big dog.

Via the Salt Lake Tribune:

When the lion, with several bystanders nearby, suddenly jumped and ran, one officer fired a shot but missed hitting the beast.

Sandy police Sgt. Dean Carriger pointed out that officers are trained to assess what or who their bullets could hit before firing their guns, and that "there was a concern of imminent danger to the public."

The big cat, after being shot by the tranquilizer gun, was taken away and reportedly never roused from its deep sleep.

Scott Root, an outreach manager for the Division of Wildlife Resources in Utah, said that death can occasionally occur from tranquilizing. "The fact that this cougar was in a highly populated area suggests that something may not have been normal with this animal," he told the Tribune.

The DWR had planned on releasing the female lion back into the wild.

Woman Is Given Free Weed With Meal At Sonic, Inexplicably Complains

The number one rule of getting free weed is that you keep the free weed, a lesson that Carla McFarland of Frederick, Md. was not privy to on Wednesday. When she ordered food from local fast food chain Sonic, and it arrived with a baggie filled with weed, McFarland complained to a manager and called the police.

Via the Frederick News-Post:

"I just kind of sat there in my car in shock," McFarland said Thursday. "I kept thinking, what if my kids had eaten it?"

A manager at the Sonic told McFarland that an employee said that the weed must have fallen out of her apron when she was serving the customer. The employee has since been fired from the restaurant.

McFarland was still not pleased. As she told the Frederick News-Post, "I think that's why everyone thinks it's so funny, because it's marijuana and it's going to be legalized," she said. "It could have been crack. It could have been cocaine in that little baggie."

School Defends Calling Kindergartner's Actions "Sexual Misconduct"

Five-year-old Eric Lopez received detention in the spring for pulling his pants down on the playground at Ashton Ranch Elementary School in Arizona. The school deemed the act "sexual misconduct"—a ruling that will remain in his permanent file. The district is now defending its actions.

According to AZFamily, the boy's mother, Erica Martinez, has been trying to have the sexual misconduct label removed from Eric's file for two months, given that his actions were not sexual. So far, the district has refused. Assistant Superintendent Jim Dean said in a statement:

"Our school district uses consistent language for disciplinary infractions in order to provide clarity and track discipline data accurately."

...

"Even though the discipline labels are consistently used and the discipline form is consistent from grades K-12 to ensure all legal mandates are met, the discussion the administrator has about a situation and consequences are age appropriate. The discussion with a kindergarten student is focused on the specific action, not on the label that is used for classifying the infraction."

AZFamily points out that there are systems in place to keep children from being accused of sexual offenses:

A state of Arizona initiative called AZ SAFE helps provide clarification to districts to assist them with the collection of information.

Under its definitions for sexual offenses, the state recommends that every district take into account the age and maturity of a student before placing their actions in the sexual offense category.

Dean says Martinez will be allowed to add a rebuttal to Eric's permanent file, so her thoughts about the decision can be on record.
