Starbucks Worker Quits After Cookie Straw Freak Out

A shift supervisor at a Starbucks in Elmhurst, Queens reportedly quit her job this week after footage of her unhinged, cookie straw-related rant went viral, PIX11 reports.

In the video, the woman can be heard shouting “call the cops” and “get the fuck outta here” to multiple customers, apparently enraged over an unpaid for tubular dessert.

Customer Ruby Chen says she still doesn’t know what she did to upset the employee, whom she identified as “Melissa.” From the NY Daily News:

“And till now, I haven’t figured out which word aggravated her,” she wrote in her complaint to the coffee chain.

The worker allegedly accused Chen of stealing the straw and snatched away the price scanner when she tried to pay, the customer said. Then she unloaded on Chen, saying at one point she could leave with the treat and never come back.

“Really?! Call me stealing!” Chen said on Facebook. “I felt so bad for what happened.”

On Saturday, the company released a statement saying, “The employee was immediately suspended and no longer works for Starbucks,” leading many to believe she was fired. Melissa herself, however, tells PIX11 she quit.

“We do our very best to hire good people with good hearts,” the woman’s former manager told the station. “This is a good person who did a bad thing.”

Modern Family Actress Wins Emancipation From Abusive Stage Mom

The long, bizarre legal battle over the custody of Ariel Winter seemingly came to an end this Friday when the 17-year-old Modern Family actress announced on Twitter she had been officially emancipated from mother Chrisoula Workman.

“Most importantly I want to thank @shanelle_gray and my father for their special support regarding this matter,” wrote Winter, “I really couldn’t have done it without them.”

Since 2012, Winter has been living with sister Shanelle Gray, 36, after a judge ruled that allegations of child abuse by their mother were serious enough to grant Gray an emergency guardianship.

Afterward, the actress’ mother and brother went to the press to claim Winter had lied about the abuse so the then 14-year-old could have a sexual relationship with her 18-year-old boyfriend.

That November, however, the L.A. County Dept. of Children and Family Services released a damning report finding Workman had indeed emotionally abused her daughter and recommending Gray be given permanent guardianship.

Gray, who was also a child actor, was removed from her mother’s care decades earlier after making similar claims of abuse, reportedly spending two years in the foster system.

Prince Harry: The Army Is "Epic" and "Fun"

Prince Harry is retiring from the Armed Forces after a ten-year, full-time military career, the Guardian reports. “The army keep giving me great jobs, and I can never thank them enough for that,” Harry said, presumably with a straight face. “I’ve had an epic 10 years, I’ve had great fun.”

Speaking in New Zealand, Harry encouraged his nephew George and his niece Charlotte to join the military themselves one day. “I would definitely encourage George, and Charlotte if she wants to as well, to have some sort of involvement in the armed forces,” he said. George and Charlotte are babies.

The prince went on to extol the virtues of the military as a redemptive and character-building institution:

“But I put my hand up, as I said to the kids today, you can make bad choices, some severe, some not so severe.

“You can make bad choices in life, but it’s how you recover from those and which path you end up taking.

“And the army has done amazing things for me. And more importantly to me[is] what I’ve seen the army do to other young guys.

Oh, haha, also: “I dread to think where I’d be without the army. Bring back national service.”

Catholic Priest Claims He Was Fired for Pro-Gay Rights Facebook Post

A priest at a Catholic college in New Jersey announced he had been fired on Friday, saying he was dismissed for posting an image on Facebook supporting an LGBT advocacy group.

“I’m sorry it was met with this response,” wrote Father Warren Hall, who served as director of campus ministry at Seton Hall University, on Twitter. “I’ll miss my work here.”

According to Hall, the offending post was an image promoting the NOH8 campaign, originally formed to fight California’s same-sex marriage ban. From NJ.com:

A spokeswoman for the Catholic university said personnel decisions about priests on campus are managed by the Archdiocese of Newark.

“Seton Hall University does not comment on personnel matters,” spokeswoman Laurie Pine said in a statement. “The Archbishop of Newark appoints the Director of Campus Ministry, who serves at his discretion.”

Jim Goodness, a spokesman for the Archdiocese, declined to comment on the specifics of why Hall was removed from the campus ministry position, but did confirm that Hall’s “term as director of campus ministry is ending.”

Shortly after Hall’s announcement, Seton Hall student Ethan Kraft created a Change.org petition asking for the former director’s reinstatement. As of Sunday afternoon, Kraft had gathered over 2,500 signatures.

“This action is not in line with the teachings of Jesus Christ,” reads the petition’s page, “nor is it line with the words of Pope Francis, current leader of the Roman Catholic Church.”

Swedish Man to Bear: "RAARRRGH!"

Of all the things one might do if one were walking through the woods and came upon a bear, one of the more counterintuitive* options would be to yell at it. And yet, here we are, watching a video of a man do just that. What a world!

Swedish Man to Bear: "RAARRRGH!"

According to TheLocal.se, Ralph Persson was out training a new hunting dog with his wife when they startled a bear.

“I screamed as much as I could and made myself very big,” he told Sundsvall Tidning, a Swedish-language newspaper. “I have seen in the past how even cranes have chased bears by folding up their wings.”

Swedish Man to Bear: "RAARRRGH!"

The Scandinavian brown bear is usually very shy. “Most bear experts agree that many more bears have seen humans in Sweden than humans have seen bears,” TheLocal.se reports.

Persson admits that he might have been more careful. “This time, I went over the limit. You have to have respect for the animals,” he said.

And yet: “To lie down and play dead? I do not believe in that.”

Pope Canonizes Two 19th-Century Palestinian Nuns

On Sunday, Pope Francis canonized two 19th-century nuns from what was then Palestine, the Associated Press reports. The canonization was attended by some 2,000 pilgrims from the region, as well as Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

The pope called Abbas “an angel of peace” when the two met on Saturday, the New York Times reports. In a statement on Sunday, Abbas said that the canonization “affirms our determination to build a sovereign, independent and free Palestine based on the principles of equal citizenship.”

Earlier this week, the Vatican signed a treaty that included recognition of “the state of Palestine.”

“The wider Arab world often thinks that it’s a Christian West against a Muslim East,” Father Jamal Khader, rector of the Latin Patriarchate Seminary in Jerusalem, told the Times.

“This is an important step from the Catholic Church to show that, no, it is standing with the rights of Palestinians and with the right to a state of Palestine.”

9/11 Memorial Evacuated Due to Fumes From Over-Treated Pool

According to CBS News, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum was briefly evacuated on Sunday after multiple visitors called police to report chemical fumes. Authorities say the odor was caused by an excess of cleaning agents used in the memorial’s reflecting pools.

The FDNY tells Gothamist that they began receiving reports of possible fumes just after 2 p.m., finding “some kind of cleaning agent for the pool.” Witness at the scene report the chemical was chlorine.

Just before 5 p.m., Fox 5 reporter Stacey Delikat tweeted that the memorial was back open after the affected pool had been shut off.

9 Dead, 18 Injured After Shootout Between Cops, Biker Gangs in Texas

Nine gang members were killed and 18 more were injured in Waco, Texas on Sunday after a gun battle broke out between police and at least three rival motorcycle gangs, the Waco Tribune-Herald reports.

According to police spokesperson Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton, authorities were already at the scene when a gang fight broke out inside the Twin Peaks Restaurant at around 12:15 p.m. As the brawl spilled into the parking lot, the bikers reportedly escalated from “fists and feet to chains, clubs and knives, then to gunfire,” shooting at both rivals and police. From KWTX:

[T]he scene at Twin Peaks is “as secure as it can be right now,” Swanton said, but police are concerned that groups who were involved in the first incident may be moving to other locations in and around Waco where more violence could erupt.

Swanton said citizens should avoid the area until an all clear can be issued.

KXXV reports that restaurant management was aware that the gangs patronized their business and police had been warned of a possible confrontation ahead of time.

UPDATE 6:30 p.m.: KCEN News reports that 18 people were injured, primarily with bullet and knife wounds, and close to 100 weapons have been recovered from the scene.

“This could have been avoided if Twin Peaks management would have listened,” Sgt. Swanton told the station, saying the restaurant refused to cooperate with police. “Some people were just trying to enjoy a nice dinner. They didn’t deserve to see this.”

UPDATE 7:10 p.m.: According to KVUE Reporter Amber Downing, police say they don’t plan on releasing the names of the motorcycle clubs involved in the shootout, not wanting to give them the publicity.

All of those killed or injured in the fight are said to be gang members, although one officer was reportedly taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion.

Housekeeper Says Family Acted Strangely Days Before They Were Murdered

Housekeeper Says Family Acted Strangely Days Before They Were Murdered

The housekeeper for the family found murdered after their house was set on fire Thursday says she noticed something was definitely amiss in the days leading up to their deaths.

Police say Savvas Savopoulos, a 46-year-old D.C. businessman, his 47-year-old wife Amy Savopoulos, their 10-year-old son Phillip and a second housekeeper, Veralicia Figueroa, 57, were all killed by some combination of blunt and sharp-force objects.

The multimillion-dollar house was then set on fire, and their blue Porsche 911 was reportedly found burning in a church parking lot in Maryland less than 10 miles away.

Friends say there was no indication anything was wrong, but one of the family’s other housekeepers says she noticed odd behavior from Savvas in the days leading up to the murders. Via ABC and the AP:

According to the records, both Savopouloses sent text messages and voice mails to a housekeeper telling her not to come to their home to clean on Thursday, which had been her normal routine.

Nelitza Gutierrez, the housekeeper who received the messages, told the Post the series of messages left her thinking something was amiss with her employers. Gutierrez had worked for the family for 20 years.

Savvas Savopoulos had told Gutierrez on Wednesday that his wife had plans to go out. But in a voice mail that night, he said Amy Savopoulos had been sick in bed.

“It was something very suspicious because I felt his voice was really tense,” Gutierrez said in Spanish. “And it was different than what he had said to me before.”

Police documents also show there were reports of unusual activity in the neighborhood. Neighbors reported seeing a man banging on the door of one home. There was an aggressive vacuum cleaner salesman at another house and reports of a prowler.

Gutierrez also says she received a strange phone message from Savvas explaining Figueora would be sleeping at the house to tend to his sick wife. “Never, never did she stay over,” she tells the Washington Post.

This weekend police released blurry video of two persons of interest walking away from the house Thursday. They’re also looking for information on the family’s Porsche, which was reportedly seen speeding down the street the day before the fire.

The couple reportedly leave behind two daughters who were away at boarding school.

Crumbling Building Facade Leaves Toddler in Critical Condition

Falling bricks from an Upper West Side apartment building critically injured a two-year-old who was visiting with her grandmother Sunday, the New York Times reports.

The child was apparently walking with her grandmother outside the Esplanade Manhattan building, a home for the elderly on West End Avenue when the bricks fell off an eighth floor windowsill.

Via the New York Post:

Susan Frierson, 60, was holding granddaughter Greta Greene at around 11:05 a.m. on West End Avenue near 74th Street when a chunk of brick from the Esplanade Manhattan nursing home fell eight stories and hit the child, authorities said.

“I saw the grandma stagger. She was holding the baby in her arms,” said Nelson Amaya, 38, the doorman of a nearby building.

Good Samaritans, including a nurse from the senior center, rushed to the pair’s aid, telling the grandmother to lie on a nearby bench and administering CPR to the unconscious, bloodied toddler.

The grandmother was also struck but apparently suffered only minor injuries.

A Buildings Department spokesperson tells the Times the building has been issued an administrative code violation. The building has received similar violations in the past, the Post reports.

The dangerous exterior has gotten them in trouble before. In 2010-2011, the owners paid the DOB $6,467 in fines for failing to show they had performed a facade inspection on time.

Disrepair to the front of building appeared obvious from the street — with at least two other exterior window sills missing bricks.

The child is reportedly currently on life support.

Manhattan's Strangest Building Opened Its Doors to Fancy Art Snobs Only

By about 6 p.m. on Saturday, throngs of eager New Yorkers were assembled outside 190 Bowery, hoping for access to a just-announced art show inside the 150-year-old former bank building. First Show / Last Show was celebrated as a chance for the public to see inside 190—which has been mostly inaccessible for decades—before the arrival of its new tenants. Not many people got in.

Photographer Jay Maisel famously used the 72-room building as a single-family home after he bought it for $102,000 in 1966. Thanks largely to Maisel’s low public profile and the layers of graffiti that built up during his tenancy, 190 Bowery became an object of fascination and nostalgia for downtowners who pined for a Bowery of an earlier era.

So the show—put on by Heidi Klum’s slick-haired boyfriend Vito Schnabel and Aby Rosen, the real estate magnate who bought 190 for $55 million from Maisel last year—had people excited. Not so much for its lineup of white guys, including Harmony Korine and Vito’s celebrity artist dad Julian, but for its setting. What would 190 Bowery look like inside?

But on Friday, Artnet reported that the show was “abruptly closed to the public for reasons unknown.” (“It’s not surprising that Rosen, Schnabel, and their coterie of rich and famous friends got a little spooked by the prospect of the unwashed masses showing up to rub elbows with the art elite,” Cait Munro wrote.) That didn’t stop the public from showing up and rubbing elbows anyway. And judging from Gothamist’s scene report, the public was pissed.

“It’s just b.s. This whole crowd turned out for an event they thought they’d have access to,” 26-year-old Brooklyn resident Maria Cortorreal said. “This would have been an amazing event for everyone to just finally see what’s going on inside.” As Cortorreal and others stood outside 190 Bowery, guards pleaded with would-be visitors to disperse and clear the sidewalk, with some yelling that the show was “already over.” Pissed off crowd members said they were told by hosts at the building’s entrance that the public opening was only an “internet rumor.” Shouts of “fascists!” and “this isn’t art!” erupted from the group, with the strongest reactions coming from older fans of the building who viewed it as a forbidden wonder for decades.

First Show / Last Show will be open by appointment only until May 29. Good luck getting in the door if you don’t have enough cash to seriously consider dropping five or six figures on a painting.
