ISIS Claims Responsibility for Paris Attacks That Killed 128 [Updated]

The city of Paris is reeling from a series of horrific attacks that reportedly left 129 dead and hundreds more injured. The bombings and shootings occurred at at least six locations across the city, including bars, restaurants, the national stadium and a concert hall.

http://gawker.com/number-of-dead...

Now, the Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attacks, according to The New York Times. The group posted a message to its platforms on Saturday calling the attacks “the first of the storm.”

“Eight brothers, wrapped in explosive belts and armed with machine rifles, targeted sites that were accurately chosen in the heart of the capital of France including the Stade de France during the match between the Crusader German and French teams, where the fool of France, François Hollande, was present...Let France and those who walk in its path know that they will remain on the top of the list of targets of the Islamic State.”

President François Hollande of France, who was in attendance at the soccer game where some of the bombs were detonated, said that he believes ISIS is responsible for the attacks.

The eight terrorists involved in the attacks are all reported to be dead —seven from suicide bombs and one shot dead by police. The worst-hit spot was the 1,500-seat Bataclan concert hall, where people were taken hostage and shot at during a show put on by the U.S. rock group Eagles of Death Metal.

According to the Guardian, at least one of the terrorists was a Frenchman and known to police as an extremist. Syrian and Egyptian passports were also reportedly found on the bodies of another attacker.

In the wake of the attacks, Paris has called a state of emergency, shutting down schools, museums and markets on Saturday.

Meanwhile, some Parisians are trying to find some way to help, lining up in droves to donate blood. Soccer fans who were being evacuated from the stadium where several bombs went off also sang the country’s national anthem as they left the arena in solidarity.

Update 12:50 p.m.

According to the Wall Street Journal, a security on duty at the Stade de France said that at least one of the attackers, wearing an explosive vest, had purchased a ticket to the game and tried to enter the 80,000-person venue. When security guards frisked the man, they discovered the vest. The bomber detonated it as he was backing away from security.

Update 1:05 p.m.

CBS will be reworking the details of the Democratic debate scheduled for Saturday night in light of the attacks in Paris. Steve Capus, executive editor of CBS News, told The New York Times that the format will be altered to focus on questions directly related to the attacks.

“It is the right time to ask all the related questions that come to mind,” he said. “We think we have a game plan to address a lot of the substantive and important topics.”

Update 1:19 p.m.

The number of people injured by the attacks has skyrocketed.

Update 1:21 p.m.

A horrifying video showing people running out of the Bataclan concert hall after a bomb was detonated has surfaced on the internet. In it, crowds pour out of a smoky building, while people who crawled out of second-story windows helplessly hang on to the outside of the building. A warning - the video contains some disturbing images.

Update 2:07 p.m.

According to the Guardian, three French nationals were arrested in Belgium in connection to the attacks in Paris. Paris public prosecutor Francois Molins said at a press conference confirmed that a Syrian and an Egyptian passport were found next to two of the terrorists’ remains. Greece’s citizen protection minister, Nikos Toskas, also said that the man who owned the Syrian passport had traveled into the European Union through the Greek island of Leros in early October.

The German National Team Slept In The Stade de France Stadium Last Night After The Paris Attacks [UPDATE]

Last night, the Paris attacks touched the Stade de France during a game between Germany and France. At least two bombs went off right outside the stadium full of 80,000 people, which you could hear on the game’s broadcast. French president Francois Hollande was in attendance and was forced to evacuate, but the others in the stadium had to wait around.

http://deadspin.com/paris-explosio...

The spectators were evacuated from the stands onto the pitch, and eventually left through a restricted number of exits. Meanwhile, the German national team never left the stadium and they slept in the locker room last night, electing not to re-enter the city and travel to their hotel room.

The game was allowed to finish, but next week’s friendlies are in doubt. France will reportedly continue along with Tuesday’s game in England. Before the game even started, the Germans were evacuated from their hotel due to a bomb threat. They have successfully left the country and travelled back to Germany, but their upcoming friendly against the Netherlands might not happen anymore.

For more on the Paris attacks, follow Gawker’s coverage.

http://gawker.com/update-isis-cl...

Update (4:02 p.m.): According to The Guardian, the French team also slept in the stadium with the German team in solidarity. From the report:

Germany’s acting FA president, Reinhard Rauball, has praised France’s players for an “outstanding gesture of camaraderie” after they refused to leave the Stade de France on Friday night in a show of solidarity with their opponents.

Both sets of players spent much of the night on mattresses in the stadium after Germany were advised not to return to their team hotel following the terrorist attacks across Paris. “The French said that they were staying as long as Germany had to stay,” said Rauball.

A man who had just finished a call on his cell phone is alive now because of that phone, which proved a powerful shrapnel shield in a pinch.

The man, identified as Sylvestre, was outside the Stade de France when one of the bombs detonated on Friday night in Paris near the stadium entrances.

The shrapnel drilled a hole straight through the Samsung phone, but, luckily, not through Sylvestre.

Denny's Customer Arrested After Alleged Pancake-Addled Rampage

It is physically impossible for me to love a story with that headline any more than I already do.

Via The Smoking Gun, Natasha West was a customer at an Oak Lawn, Illinois Denny’s just looking for some pancakes. Specifically, all of the pancakes, as she had ordered the $4 all-you-can-eat pancake special. When West was informed, however, that a singular order of the special only applied to her and that her entire party could not partake of her limitless flapjack bounty, police say she reacted poorly.

West is alleged to have begun cursing and throwing punches at her server (the bearer of the ill hotcake tidings)—all of which apparently missed. The fact that West allegedly began cursing and wildly swinging at a server over $4 all-you-can-eat pancakes would be bonkers enough, but she and her party are also accused of leaving without paying their tab, with West supposedly kicking the holy hell out of a door on the way out.

Police were ultimately able to locate West and her friends from a description of the car in which they fled the scene. West has been charged with assault and damage to property, while another member of her party has been charged with providing police with false identification.

I think this is the first time Kitchenette has ever covered a batshit crazy news story from a Denny’s, and I am genuinely shocked it took this long.

Rob Lowe Thinks the Aftermath of a Tragedy Is the Perfect Time to Criticize France's Immigration Policy

Rob Lowe, the thespian’s equivalent to an overexcited Golden retriever, has taken this tragic moment in French history to comment on the country’s immigration policy.

On Friday, in the aftermath of a series of terrorist attacks that left 129 dead and several hundred injured, Lowe took to Twitter to say his piece. First, it seemed innocent, a show of support for the country:

Then, things took a turn for the worse, when Lowe seemed to criticize France’s acceptance of a wave of immigrants who have been fleeing countries in the Middle East.

The actor quickly backtracked, saying that he’d “lived in France, and spend a ton of time there.” Then, when his haters wouldn’t abate, Lowe reaffirmed that he was loving France, not criticizing it for taking in people seeking asylum.

Oopsie, Rob Lowe! Maybe it’s best to stick to manufacturing those classic Ellen moments, or to loving fun.

Merchandise Manager for Eagles of Death Metal Killed in Paris Attacks

The identities of people killed in the tragic attacks on Paris Friday night are starting to be released.

Among the dead are people from all over the world; people from Belgium, Tunisia, England, Romania, Portugal Sweden and the U.S. were killed or injured.

Nick Alexander, a Briton who was selling merchandise for the band Eagles of Death Metal, was reportedly killed at the Bataclan concert hall, along with more than 80 others.

In the aftermath of the attacks, the band has announced that it will be canceling the rest of its tour and plans to return to the U.S., according to an official at promoters Nous Productions. A memorial fund has been set up in his honor. Other bands, including the Foo Fighters and U2, have cancelled tours or shows as well.

Another casualty was journalist Guillaume B Decherf, a music writer for the French arts and culture publication Les Inrocks.

More names are expected to be released in the coming days.

Report: Lamar Odom Can't Recognize Family; Doctors Fear "Serious" Brain Damage

According to a report from TMZ Sports, Lamar Odom is still struggling to recover basic functions after he suffered many strokes and was found unconscious in a Nevada brothel. They have reported that in addition to problems with basic communication and moving around, he can’t recognize people he should.

From the report:

The scariest part ... Lamar can’t recognize longtime friends and even family members when they come to visit. We’re told docs believe he’s suffered significant brain damage.

Odom has been in the hospital for over a month now. Earlier this week, Khloe Kardashian, Odom’s estranged wife, told Us Weekly that he was still working up to walking on his own. That same report also noted that Odom has been emotionally “erratic.” The American Stroke Association notes that this is a common symptom for stroke victims.

Hillary Clinton Explains Why Wall Street Loves Her: 9/11

$
0
0

It is a fact that Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, like her previous political campaigns, is funded in large part by donations from the finance industry. Bernie Sanders has criticized her for this—or, at least, he has pointed this out, critically. At tonight’s inconveniently scheduled Democratic debate on CBS, Sanders was asked to reiterate that criticism. Clinton’s response was, well, memorable.

A simple answer to this question of why so many of your donors are from the finance industry is, Wall Street gives me money because they think I’m going to win, and they are obviously trying to influence me. Then, to sound good and not bad, you could add: but it won’t work.

A less simple answer is this:

You know, not only do I have hundreds of thousands of donors, most of them small, and i’m very proud the fact that for the first time, a majority of my donors are women, 60 percent. ( cheers and applause ) So I— I represented New York, and I represented New York on 9/11, when we were attacked. Where were we attacked? We were attacked in downtown Manhattan where Wall Street is. I did spend a whole lot of time and effort helping them rebuild. That was good for New York, it was good for the economy, and it was a way to rebuke the terrorists who had attacked our country. So it’s fine for you to say what you’re going to say, but I looked very carefully at your proposal, reinstating Glass-Steagall is a part of what very well could help, but it is nowhere near enough. My proposal is tougher, more effective, and more comprehensive because I go after all of Wall Street not just the big banks.

Yes, sure, Wall Street is indeed in Lower Manhattan, which was also one of the sites of the 9/11 attacks. I’m not sure what was supposed to be the “rebuke to the terrorists”—Clinton spending time in lower Manhattan or Clinton accepting donations from the finance industry?

CBS then outsourced the job of “debate moderator” to Twitter (which could have been worse), reading Clinton a tweet asking what, precisely, 9/11 had to do with campaign finance.

This answer was a bit more coherent, if unlikely to sound convincing to anyone inclined to see the Clintons as longtime agents of the economic ruling elite.

First Suspect Identified in Paris Attacks Was a French Citizen

A suspect has been identified in the tragic attacks that left 129 dead and hundreds wounded in Paris Friday night.

Ismaël Omar Mostefaï, 29, a French citizen who was one of three attackers who took and killed hostages at the Bataclan concert hall, according to The New York Times.

Mostefaï was publicly identified by the mayor of Chartres, a town where he previously lived, in a Facebook post. Paris prosecutor François Molins said that Mostefaï had been arrested before, and was known by the government to be influenced by extremist Islamist beliefs.

According to the Belgian Federal Prosecutor, seven people have also been arrested in connection with the attacks in Brussels. On Saturday, officials detained a man who was linked to a rented Volkswagen Polo that was meant as a getaway car by attackers at the Bataclan concert hall.

Meanwhile, the U.S. is claiming that it has killed a leading member of the Islamic State, the group that claimed responsibility for the attacks. On Saturday, an F-15 fighter jet strike reportedly killed the group’s leader in Libya, Abu Nabil al-Anbari, according to Agence France-Presse. The Pentagon said that the strike on al-Anbari was ordered before the attacks in Paris.

The strike comes just days after the U.S. government announced that it was “reasonably sure” it had assassinated the ISIS executioner known as “Jihadi John” by way of a drone strike in Syria.

Saturday Night Live forwent its usual opening monologue in favor of a somber tribute to Paris, after a series of attacks that have rocked the city.

“Paris is the city of lights,” said cast member Cecily Strong. “And here in New York City, we know that light will never go out. Our love and support is with everyone there tonight. We stand with you.”

On a lighter note, the show also nailed a great skit about “Young Ben Carson,” recreating some memorable moments in the Republican candidate’s storied past.
