Ted Cruz Bought Personal Data on Tens of Millions of Americans and He Still Can't Make People Like Him

Ted Cruz’s campaign, ostensibly speaking, has a major leg up on most of the other candidates: An in-house team of data scientists, funded by a billionaire supporter, analyzing the data of tens of millions of unwitting American Facebook users. And yet, people still find him deeply unlikeable.

(“I would rather have anybody else be the president of the United States. Anyone. I would rather pick somebody from the phone book,” Cruz’s freshman year roommate has said. “Stop asking us stupid questions and do something productive with your time,” say my parents.)

That kind of data isn’t cheap. The company spearheading Cruz’s data analysis, Cambridge Analytica, is owned in part by Robert Mercer—a Cruz supporter who threw $11 million at the pro-Cruz SuperPac, Keep the Promise I. Not that it’s all charity—according to the Guardian, Cruz SuperPacs supported by Mercer and his family have paid the company at least $2.5 million this election season. And so far, Cruz’s campaign has reportedly pitched in an additional $750,000.

And they’ve given the Cruz campaign a lot to work with: According to the Guardian, the British company has information on millions of Facebook-using Americans, thanks to a process called data seeding. But it seems not all of it was above board, informed consent-wise.

The academic used Amazon’s crowdsourcing marketplace Mechanical Turk (MTurk) to access a large pool of Facebook profiles, hoovering up tens of thousands of individuals’ demographic data – names, locations, birthdays, genders – as well as their Facebook “likes”, which offer a range of personal insights.

This was achieved by recruiting MTurk users by paying them about one dollar to take a personality questionnaire that gave access to their Facebook profiles. This raised the alarm among some participants, who flagged Kogan for violating MTurk’s terms of service. “They want you to log into Facebook and then download a bunch of your information,” complained one user at the time.

Crucially, Kogan also captured the same data for each person’s unwitting friends. For every individual recruited on MTurk, he harvested information about their friends, meaning the dataset ballooned significantly in size. Research shows that in 2014, Facebook users had an average of around 340 friends

By summer 2014, Kogan’s company had created an expansive and powerful dataset. His business partner boasted on LinkedIn that their private outfit, Global Science Research (GSR), “owns a massive data pool of 40+ million individuals across the United States – for each of whom we have generated detailed characteristic and trait profiles”.

The Cruz campaign reportedly used that data to build models of voters using “six key personality types,” some of whom, presumably, could be persuaded to vote for Cruz.

That a company figured out a way to harvest our information freely posted on Facebook is unsettling, though hardly remarkable. But the surprising outcome is this: Despite what the Guardian terms “an intensified collision of billionaire financing and digital targeting on the campaign trail,” Ted Cruz is still a deeply unappealing candidate.

The Dream Ticket: Trump-Carson (Independent)

If listening to the current Republican presidential frontrunners speak is scaring you to death, here is something to make you feel better: there is now a semi-plausible scenario in which the entire party hilariously self-destructs.

Contemplating a world in which someone like Donald Trump could be the presidential nominee of a major party is terrifying. But now—with a new Washington Post report that Republican Party insiders are quietly starting to plan for the possibility of a “brokered convention” that would effectively allow the party establishment to steal the nomination away from Trump should he prove too popular—everything is in place for the chain of events that would almost certainly destroy the Republican’s chances in 2016.

1. Republican Party leaders are embarrassed by Donald Trump’s popularity, but they do not know how to stop it. They thought it would fade on its own, but it hasn’t.

2. The head of the RNC, the Senate majority leader, and “longtime Republican power brokers” met to discuss how to hijack the nomination from Trump (or someone equally crazy) at the convention, should it get that far.

3. The story of the meeting leaks, obviously, feeding the narrative of powerful political insiders trying to thwart the will of the public—the narrative already embraced by the sort of voters who have made Trump the frontrunner.

4. Ben Carson today released an outraged statement about the WaPo story, threatening to take his ball and go play elsewhere: “If this was the beginning of a plan to subvert the will of the voters and replace it with the will of the political elite, I assure you Donald Trump will not be the only one leaving the party.”

5. Now, projecting forward requires only a little imagination: first, Ben Carson, who is not going to win the nomination anyhow and therefore has little to gain, leaves the Republican Party in order to maintain his brand of moral purity.

6. Then, Donald Trump—either due to declining poll numbers once the real voting starts, or just because of the accumulation of perceived slights from the Republican powers-that-be who all clearly hate him, decides to leave the Republican Party and make an independent run for the White House. Such a run would feed his ego perhaps even more than running as a Republican, since he could take his rabid supporters with him and also be free of establishment figures trying to rein him in.

7. Trump signs up Ben Carson as his VP candidate, because why not.

8. The Trump/ Carson independent ticket is easily popular enough to suck a double-digit percentage of voters away from the Republican nominee (even the Republicans acknowledge that already).

9. The Democrats win handily in 2016.

Mister Trump; Mister Carson. I applaud your profound moral honesty and urge you in the strongest possible terms to abandon the corrupt Republican Party and lead your supporters on a bold independent run for the White House, which will be inspirational and also, you know, successful, or whatever. Just do it.

Did Stanley Kubrick Fake This Video of Stanley Kubrick Admitting to Faking the Moon Landing?

Did Stanley Kubrick Fake This Video of Stanley Kubrick Admitting to Faking the Moon Landing?

As any good Champion of Truth knows, the alleged moon landing was, of course, an elaborate sham constructed by Hollywood and NASA to distract the rest of the world from our newly acquired Nazi UFO technology. And as any reasonable person knows, that is bullshit. Oraccording to a fake new video of a BOMBSHELL fake Stanley Kubrick interview—is it?!

The newly released interview by “filmmaker T. Patrick Murray” claims to be 15-year-old footage taken just before Kubrick’s death in which the famed director finally admits to faking the entire moon-landing as we know it.

The “documentary” itself, dubbed Shooting Stanley Kubrick and incessantly spliced with footage from his various films, is an absolute marvel of grating, unwatchable cinema. You can see it below:

But since you probably won’t be able to last more than a few minutes before you start bleeding from your eyes, here’s the “raw,” unaltered fake Kubrick in all his wholly coached glory:

To be clear, there is almost no way this is Stanley Kubrick. But just to be sure, we reached out to his former wife, Christiane Kubrick. A spokesman responded with the following: “The interview is a lie, Stanley Kubrick has never been interviewed by T.Patrick Murray the whole story is made up, fraudulent & untrue.”

Then again, of course Stanley Kubrick’s widow would say that. Made up. Fraudulent. AND untrue?

Either way, whether this video is real (it’s not), the elaborate construction of an unhinged man (probably), or the elaborate construction of Kubrick himself for reasons unknown (why not!), the transcript is—to say the least—incredible.

A small sampling of the revelations that lie within:

Fake Kubrick: I perpetrated a huge fraud on the American public, which I am now about to detail, involving the United States government and NASA, that the moon landings were faked, that the moon landings ALL were faked , and that I was the person who filmed it.

Murray: Ok. (laughs) What are you talking...You’re serious. Ok.

FK: I’m serious. Dead serious. Yes, it was fake.

And:

M: Why are you telling the world? Why does the world need to know that the moon landings aren’t real and you faked them?

FK: I consider them to be my masterpiece.

M: And you can’t take credit, or even talk about...

FK: Well, I am now..

M: ... So, you can’t talk to Roger Ebert about it. Does that frustrate you? Why did they have to fake it? Why would they have to do that?

FK: Because it is impossible to get there.

As well as:

FK: Yes, 2001 was very ambitious, but that’s not to say that faking the moon landing was not ambitious. But I learned things from making 2001, and that’s why I got this gig in the first place.

M: That makes sense

FK: Well, it was easy for me, because I didn’t think a whole lot about the morality of it. But I didn’t. And I could see that Neil was, he was bothered by it.

Conspiracy theorists, for their part, are delighted to finally have the proof they’ve been waiting for all these years.

Did Stanley Kubrick Fake This Video of Stanley Kubrick Admitting to Faking the Moon Landing?

It’s just too bad the mainstream idiots and Illuminati reptilians of the world will always refuse to see.

American Hero Hangs Up Her Cape

Back in October, 46-year-old Tatiana Duva-Rodriguez fired her handgun at two men fleeing a Home Depot in Michigan, hitting a tire in the car they were escaping in. But after being charged herself with reckless use of a firearm and sentenced to 18 months probation she announced that she has chosen to spite America... by never shooting wildly at random people ever again.

http://gawker.com/woman-with-con...

“I tried to help,” she told the gathered media after her trial. “And I learned my lesson that I will never help anybody again.”

:-[

One could say that Duva-Rodriguez is taking her ball and going home, but as part of her conviction, her permit to carry a concealed weapon has been revoked until 2023. Are there any armed citizens left to fight crime in the streets?

Woman Fed Up With Waiting at the DMV Kicks Cop in the Nuts

What’s the deal with DMVs, am I right?—is probably what this remarkably tenacious woman would be saying if she wasn’t busy kicking the shit out of this particular DMV’s resident cop.

There are a lot of things to love about this video:

  1. The way she screams “You cant even fight!” right before attempting (and failing) to knock over the giant man twice her size.
  2. The way she screams “You can’t even fight!” once again, right after the cop apparently body slams her.
  3. The way, at about half way through, our little fighter drops to the ground and tries to literally crawl her way to freedom in a move reminiscent of Samara from The Ring.
  4. The way the woman yells, “I’m not going to jail!” as the cop finishes handcuffing her, after which she will almost certainly be going to jail.
  5. This woman’s comment on the video on Facebook:

Woman Fed Up With Waiting at the DMV Kicks Cop in the Nuts

All in all, an admirable mixture of perseverance and insanity. We give her ten renewed licenses out of ten.

Martin Shkreli Plans To Hike Up the Price for Another Life-Saving Drug, This Time for Poor People

Martin Shkreli, a man who holds the title “most hated” in the disparate fields of health care and rap, is back to his usual tricks: ratcheting up the price of life-saving medications and generally being vile.

Shkreli set his sights on a drug that fights Chagas disease, a parasitic infection that affects 6 to 7 million people, many of them poor. Last month, Shkreli took control of KaloBios Pharmaceuticals, a company that sells benznidazole, a common treatment for Chagas disease. According to The New York Times, Shkreli plans to take advantage of a federal program that awards vouchers to develop drugs that one company can then sell to another for millions. From the Times:

Mr. Shkreli said on a conference call with KaloBios investors last week that if the company won F.D.A. approval for benznidazole, it would have exclusive rights to sell it in the United States for at least five years. He said the price would be similar to that of hepatitis C drugs, which cost $60,000 to nearly $100,000 for a course of treatment.

Right now in Latin America, where Chagas disease is most common, the typical treatment costs $50 to $100. In the U.S., benznidazole is given out free on an experimental basis to the few cases that crop up.

People are usually infected with Chagas disease by getting bit by a blood-sucking insect. If untreated, the disease can be life-threatening.

But Shkreli, who made headlines earlier this year after he pulled a similar stunt with Daraprim, another dug to fight a parasitic infection, is more likely to sell the voucher to develop the drug than actually develop it himself, given that there’s a very small market in the U.S., a way to profit off life-saving medications while not actually helping the people who suffer from them.

Here are some of the ways that scientists the Times spoke to described Shkreli’s latest venture: “an abuse of the system” and “pretty devastating.”

But who knows? Maybe this time, he’ll spend the profit he squeezes out other peoples’ devastating illnesses on something good, like a sealed rocket ship that he can climb aboard and shoot into the black abyss of space, never to be heard of again.

Paris Climate Talks Called a 'Fraud' By the Father of Climate Science as Nations Make a Deal

As the climate negotiations in Paris—the ones that are pretty much the last-ditch effort to save the world as we know it—draw to a close, scientists are already seeing major flaws in the Band-Aid to fix Earth.

On Saturday, a final draft of the agreement was released for the representatives of 195 countries to pore over. The document sets a goal of halting warming at 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit)—though it doesn’t mandate how much each country must reduce its own greenhouse gas emissions.

When asked for his take on the negotiations, James Hansen, formerly NASA’s chief climatologist and arguably the most famous climate scientist on Earth, called it all one big fraud. From the Guardian:

“It’s a fraud really, a fake,” he says, rubbing his head. “It’s just bullshit for them to say: ‘We’ll have a 2C warming target and then try to do a little better every five years.’ It’s just worthless words. There is no action, just promises. As long as fossil fuels appear to be the cheapest fuels out there, they will be continued to be burned.”

Hansen has called for a climate “fee,” similar to a carbon tax, to be levied on countries that are major emitters—an idea that has failed to gain mainstream traction.

Meanwhile, lawmakers and leaders in Paris are working on more important things, like creating ludicrous acronyms, as The Atlantic points out.

Yet CBDRILONCWRC turns out to be pretty important. According to Ryan Mearns, a Kiwi university student who has become one of the conference’s most important (if unofficial) scribes, it stands for “Common But DifferentiatedResponsibility In Light Of National Circumstances With Respective Capability.”

The climate negotiations in summation: no to binding emissions tax, yes to CBDRILONCWRC.

Civil Suit Claims That Police Were Investigating Daniel Holtzclaw Weeks Before Last Attack

A lawsuit obtained by the Guardian claims that Oklahoma City police were investigating Daniel Holtzclaw before his final attack on June 18, 2014. Despite the open investigation, the lawsuit claims that Holtzclaw was allowed to stay on regular duty.

Holtzclaw was convicted of 18 of 36 charges of rape and sexual assault on Thursday, December 10. The jury recommended a sentence of 263 years for his crimes. Holtzclaw’s crimes were committed between 2013 and June 18, 2014, but the Guardian report indicates that the Oklahoma City police began investigating Holtzclaw on May 8, 2014.

The paper reports:

Jannie Ligons, a 57-year-old daycare worker, was Holtzclaw’s final confirmed victim before his arrest. In the early morning hours of 18 June, Holtzclaw pulled Ligons over as she drove home from a friend’s house and forced her to give him oral sex. Holtzclaw was convicted of several charges related to that assault.

A lawsuit Ligons has filed against Oklahoma City claims that in spite of the investigation beginning 8 May, the department ‘left him working as a police officer without supervision or monitoring.’

‘The City of Oklahoma City was negligent in that…the City was aware of some, if not all the assaults, weeks prior to the Plaintiff’s assault’ by Holtzclaw, the lawsuit reads. ‘The City knew or had reason to know of the dangerous activities of its servant.’ Ligons is suing for $75,000.

Ligons filed the suit before Holtzclaw’s trial began, but it was put on hold during his criminal trial. Ligons’ attorney Benjamin Crump—a notable civil rights attorney who also represented Trayvon Martin’s family—said that this would be the first of many lawsuits showing that both the city and police department acted too slowly. “We understand that there were other women who called before [Ligons], whose calls went unanswered,” Crump said in a press conference.

During Holtzclaw’s trial, an Oklahoma City detective testified that one of the women—identified only as TM—reported her assault on May 24, 2014, weeks before Holtzclaw attacked Ligons. Ligons reported her assault the same day of the crime; “He just picked the wrong lady to stop that night,” she said.

Holtzclaw’s conviction comes on the heels of an Associated Press report that found nearly 1,000 police officers had been fired over a period of six years for crimes ranging from rape to sexual assault and possession of child pornography.

Women in Saudi Arabia Still Can't Drive, But They Can Vote

In a milestone moment for the country, women in Saudi Arabia participated in the country’s elections on Saturday, as both voters and candidates.

A total 130,000 women—about 1 percent of the country’s 12 million women—registered to vote, compared to 1.35 million Saudi men, according to the Associated Press. What’s more, some 980 female candidates ran for municipal council seats, races in which they were outnumbered by male candidates 6-1.

Their chance of success, however, is “slim to zero,” according to Karen Young, a senior resident scholar at the Arab Gulf States Institute. During the election, female candidates weren’t allowed to speak directly with male voters, needing to campaign through male stand-ins or from behind a partition.

But activists hope that the election will be a welcome step forward for Saudi women, who still cannot legally drive, get higher education, swim or play sports freely, or travel abroad without the permission of a male family member.

Said Emirati political scientist, Abdelkhaleq Abdullah to the Guardian:

“It is a historic day. It will be enough even if one woman wins.”

The Paris Climate Agreement Has Been Adopted

The Paris Climate Agreement Has Been Adopted

After two weeks of marathon negotiations, 195 countries approved an accord that would wean the world off fossil fuels this century, limiting global warming to 2ºC, with an aspirational target of 1.5ºC. It’s the first successful end to a global climate summit after two decades of failed negotiations.

The final draft of the text that forms the backbone of the Paris accord was supposed to be completed Friday morning, but negotiations ran long in light of numerous disputes over the wording of key passages. Major sticking points included whether the world should limit its carbon emissions to prevent more than 2ºC of global warming—a widely recognized target—or whether a more ambitious goal of 1.5ºC of warming should be pursued. Developing nations and low-lying countries that are already feeling the impacts of climate change have made a strong push for the latter.

The final text is a bit of a compromise: the resolution calls on the world to hold “the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2 °C” and to pursue “efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 °C.” We should, however, bear in mind that the world has already hit 1ºC of warming, and based on the carbon reductions pledges countries have brought to the table, experts say we’ll be lucky if we hit the 2ºC warming target.

Another major point of contention in Paris has been financing. At the Copenhagen climate summit in 2009, it was decided that wealthy nations would shore up $100 billion a year by 2020 to help the developing world decarbonize quickly. Developing nations have insisted that specific language needs to be included in the final text to ensure that this pledge is met. Ultimately, the $100 billion figure appears only in the text’s preamble, not in any legally binding portions of the agreement.

Each country has created its own carbon emissions reductions targets and deadlines. The final text legally requires all countries to report their progress every five years, with the goal of incrementally stepping up ambition across the board.

Perhaps the most optimistic part of the final accord is an explicit long-term goal of net-zero carbon emissions, to be met sometime in the latter half of the 21st century. Here’s that specific text:

The Paris Climate Agreement Has Been Adopted

Not everyone is 100% happy with the accord, but today’s unanimous vote of support is nonetheless historic, marking the very first time an agreement of this scope is legally binding for all nations.

“Our text is the best possible balance,” French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said this afternoon, “a balance which is powerful yet delicate, which will enable each delegation, each group of countries, with his head held high, having achieved something important.”

Now let’s see if the world acts on it.

Who Just Bought Nevada’s Largest Newspaper for $140 Million?

Who Just Bought Nevada’s Largest Newspaper for $140 Million?

“Who owns a multimillion dollar newspaper?” is not a question you hear very often. But with the shrouded sale of the largest paper in Nevada, the Las Vegas Review-Journal, to an undisclosed owner, the question is being asked over and over.

On Friday, James DeHaven, a reporter at the newspaper, published a story asking it in his own paper, also detailing the inflated price it sold for.

What is known: News + Media Capital Group LLC — a newly formed Delaware-domiciled company backed by “undisclosed financial backers with expertise in the media industry” — paid $140 million for the Review-Journal and its sister publications.

That’s around $38 million more than New Media Investment Group paid for the all of Stephens Media LLC, a national chain of newspapers that included the Review-Journal, eight other dailies and 65 weekly newspapers. The amount points to investors with deep pockets and a perhaps even deeper desire to own Nevada’s biggest newspaper even though the paper’s revenues, like those of all print publications, have been in decline.

The owner’s anonymity has led to suggestions that a politically-minded person or group could have acquired in before the upcoming 2016 elections. Wrote media critic and New York University professor Jay Rosen in a Facebook post:

“One of the first thoughts I had was: Nevada is an early primary state. The Review-Journal is the largest newspaper in the state. Was it sold to a player in that event, or people who want to be players? That slightly conspiratorial thought may be way off base. Of course, there is no way to know as long as the ownership remains hidden. That’s the point.”

In a bizarre turn on Saturday, the paper’s publisher removed quotes from a Thursday night article about the sale and the owner’s anonymity, according to The Huffington Post. In the section, Michael Schroeder, manager for News + Media Capital Group LLC, had told the paper’s staff not to worry about who their company was owned by.

The removed sections read:

Schroeder said News + Media does not own his newspapers or any other publications. When asked, he would not disclose the company’s investors.

“They want you to focus on your jobs … don’t worry about who they are,” Schroeder said.

Review-Journal Editor Michael Hengel noted the lack of disclosure.

“The questions that were not answered Thursday are 1) Who is behind the new company, and 2) What are their expectations?” Hengel said.

However, if the reporters at the Las Vegas Review-Journal are any good at their jobs, then the owner won’t be anonymous for long.

If you have any information about the identities of the paper’s new owners, send an email to melissa.cronin@gawker.com

Cher and Her Friend Ted Cruz, 'Satan Incarnate,' Have a Really Nice Rapport

The Twitter of Cher, which consists mainly of a frantic jumbles of exclamation points and emojis, is always a joy to watch, and even more so when a presidential candidate is involved.

Cher’s latest Twitter target is none other than Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz, whom the singer has been blasting with angry, capitalized tweets. Sometimes, she likes to refer to her friend Ted as “SATAN INCARNATE,” and “Judas.”

But this is no one-way rapport, oh no! Cruz, always the gentleman, thought it was a wise political move to respond to the online ravings of a woman whose Twitter is the equivalent of those magnetic poetry kits that you stick on your fridge.

We will update this post when these two eventually patch things up.

The Real Story Of Apollo 17... And Why We Never Went Back To The Moon

The Real Story Of Apollo 17... And Why We Never Went Back To The Moon

On December 11, 1972, Apollo 17 touched down on the Moon. This was not only our final Moon landing, but the last time we left low Earth orbit. With the successful launch of the Orion capsule, NASA is finally poised to go further again. So it’s important to remember how we got to the Moon — and why we stopped going.

Crewed by Commander Eugene A. Cernan, Command Module Pilot Ronald E. Evans and Lunar Module Pilot Harrison P. Schmitt, the Apollo 17 mission was the first to include a scientist. The primary scientific objectives included “geological surveying and sampling of materials and surface features in a preselected area of the Taurus-Littrow region; deploying and activating surface experiments; and conducting in-flight experiments and photographic tasks during lunar orbit and transearth coast.”

The Real Story Of Apollo 17... And Why We Never Went Back To The Moon

Harrison ‘Jack’ Schmitt had earned his PhD in Geology from Harvard University in 1964, and had worked for the United States Geological Survey and at Harvard University before going through Astronaut training in 1965. Apollo 17 was his first mission into space, and would be the first astronaut-scientist to step on the surface of the Moon. Accompanying him was Eugene ‘Gene’ Cernan, a veteran astronaut who had first flown into space with the Gemini IX-A mission in 1966 and later served as the Lunar Module Pilot for the Apollo 10 mission in May of 1969, where he came within 90 miles of the Lunar surface.

04 14 21 43: Schmitt: Stand by. 25 feet, down at 2. Fuel’s good. 20 feet. Going down at 2. 10 feet. 10 feet -

04 14 21 58: Schmitt: CONTACT.

04 14 22 03: Schmitt: *** op, push. Engine stop; ENGINE ARM; PROCEED; COMMAND override, OFF; MODE CONTROL, ATT HOLD; PGNS, AUTO.

Schmitt landed the Challenger Lunar Module in the Taurus-Littrow lunar valley, just to the southeast of Mare Serenitatis, a region of geological significance on the Moon. The mission’s planners hoped that the region would provide a wealth of information about the history of the Moon’s surface. Upon landing, the pair began their own observations of the lunar surface:

04 14 37 05: Cernan: “You know, I noticed there’s even a lot of difference in earthshine and - and in the double umbra. You get in earthshine on the thing, and it’s - it’s hard to see the stars even if you don’t have the Earth in there.”

04 14 23 28: Cernan: “Oh, man. Look at that rock out there.”

Schmitt: “Absolutely incredible. Absolutely incredible.”

After several hours of preparation, Cernan stepped onto the Lunar surface:

04 18 31 0: “I’m on the footpad. And, Houston, as I step off at the surface at Taurus-Littrow, I’d like to dedicate the first step of Apollo 17 to all those who made it possible. Jack, I’m out here. Oh, my golly. Unbelievable. Unbelievable, but is it bright in the Sun. Okay. We landed in a very shallow depression. That’s why we’ve got a slight pitch-up angle. Very shallow, dinner-plate-like.”

The two astronauts unloaded a lunar rover, and began to deploy scientific instruments around their landing site: an experiments package and explosives (to complete seismic experiments begun with other Apollo missions in other locations on the Moon). Their first exclusion in the rover yielded numerous samples of lunar rock. Over the next couple of days, the astronauts completed two additional Moon walks, where they continued to drive across the lunar surface and collect samples.

The Real Story Of Apollo 17... And Why We Never Went Back To The Moon

Schmitt later described the landing site to NASA Oral historian Carol Butler: “It was the most highly varied site of any of the Apollo sites. It was specifically picked to be that. We had three-dimensions to look at with the mountains, to sample. You had the Mare basalts in the floor and the highlands in the mountain walls. We also had this apparent young volcanic material that had been seen on the photographs and wasn’t immediate obvious, but ultimately we found in the form of the orange soil at Shorty crater.”

Why we went to space

The scientific endeavors of Apollo 17 were the culmination of a massive program that had begun in 1963 following the successes of the Mercury Program. In the aftermath of the Second World War, the United States and Soviet Union became embroiled in a competitive arms race that saw significant military gains on both sides, eventually culminating in the development of rockets capable of striking enemy territory across the world. The next step for arms superiority jumped from the atmosphere to Low Earth Orbit to the Moon, the ultimate high ground. As this happened, each country capitalized on the advances in rocket technology to experiment with human spaceflight missions. The Soviet Union succeeded in putting Yuri Gagarin into space in 1961, just a couple of years after launching the first satellite into orbit.

Closely followed by the United States, space became an incredibly public demonstration of military and technological might. The development of space travel didn’t occur in a political vacuum: the drive for the United States to develop rockets and vehicles which could travel higher and faster than their Soviet counterparts happened alongside increasing US/USSR tensions, especially as geopolitical crises such the Cuban Missile Crisis and the US deployment of missiles to Turkey demonstrated how ready each country was to annihilating the other.

The Real Story Of Apollo 17... And Why We Never Went Back To The Moon

Image via Universe Today

As the space program took off, it was supported by other research and scientific efforts from the broader military industrial complex which President Dwight Eisenhower had worried about just a handful of years earlier. (Eisenhower had not been a major supporter of the development of space travel which began under his watch, and had attempted to downplay the significance of Sputnik.) The red hot environment of the Cold War allowed for significant political capital and governmental spending which supported a first-strike infrastructure, and in part, trickled over to the scientific and aeronautical fields, which maintained a peaceful and optimistic message.

By 1966, the space race peaked: NASA received its highest budget ever, at just under 4.5% of the total US federal budget, at $5.933 billion dollars (around $43 billion today.) The United States had made clear gains in space by this point: Project Gemini had completed its final mission, and with efforts towards the next phase under Apollo were well under way. By this point, the social and political infrastructure and support for space had begun to wane, and would ultimately fall away after Apollo 11 successfully landed on the Moon’s surface in July of 1969. After this point, NASA continued with planned missions, and eventually landed five additional Apollo missions on the Moon. (Another, Apollo 13, was unable to land after mechanical problems).

Changing priorities

Just a year after Apollo 11 landed, NASA began to reprioritize: plans for a space station were revived, and in 1970, they announced that Apollo 20 would be cancelled in favor of the creation of a new venture: Skylab. On September 2nd, 1970, the agency announced the final three Apollo missions: Apollo 15, 16 and 17. The agency was forced to contend with political pressure as well: In 1971, the White House intended to completely cancel the Apollo program after Apollo 15, but ultimately, the two remaining Apollo missions were kept in place. Harrison Schmitt, who had been training for Apollo 18, was bumped up to Apollo 17 after NASA faced pressure from scientists to send one of their own to the Moon.

On December 14th, 1972, Cernan became the last human to step on the Moon’s surface:

07 00 00 47: “Bob, this is Gene, and I’m on the surface and as I take man’s last steps from the surface, back home, for some time to come, but we believe not too long into the future. I’d like to Just list what I believe history will record that America’s challenge of today has forged man’s destiny of tomorrow. And, as we leave the Moon at Taurus Littrow, we leave as we come and, God willing, as we shall return, with peace and hope for all mankind. Godspeed the crew of Apollo 17.”

In the forty-two years since those words were spoken, nobody has stepped on the Moon. The levels of federal spending which NASA had received before 1966 had become untenable to a public which had become financially wary, particularly as they experienced a major oil crisis in 1973, which shifted the nation’s priorities. Spending in space was something that could be done, but with far more fiscal constraints than ever before, limiting NASA to research and scientific missions in the coming years. Such programs included the development of the Skylab program in 1973, and the Space Shuttle program, as well as a number of robotic probes and satellites.

The Real Story Of Apollo 17... And Why We Never Went Back To The Moon

This shift in priorities deeply impacted the willpower of policymakers to implement new exploratory missions to the Moon and beyond. Optimistic dreams of reaching Mars had long since perished, and as NASA focused on the Space Shuttle, the physical infrastructure which supported lunar missions vanished: No longer were Saturn V rockets manufactured, and unused rockets were turned into museum displays. The entire technical and manufacturing apparatus, which has supported both military and civilian operations, had likewise begun to wind down. The Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) and its successors began to freeze the numbers of missiles which could be deployed by both the United States and Soviet Union in 1972, and each country largely began to step down their operations. The urgency which fueled the Cold War arms race had begun to cool, and along with it, the support for much of the efforts required to bring people into space and to the Moon.

Since that time, US Presidents have spoken of their desire to return to the Moon, but often in terms of decades, rather than in single digits. It’s easy to see why: up until recently, US spaceflight operations were focused entirely on Low Earth Orbit activities, as well as admirable cooperative international programs such as the International Space Station, and major scientific instruments such as Mars Pathfinder, Opportunity/Spirit and Curiosity. Other major concerns have redirected US attentions from spaceflight: the United States’ War on Terror, which is expected to cost US taxpayers over $5 trillion dollars in the long run.

The Real Story Of Apollo 17... And Why We Never Went Back To The Moon

The launch of Orion atop a Delta IV Heavy rocket was exciting to watch, as well as newer players in the space launch field, SpaceX and Orbital Sciences Corporation, which suggesting that a new generation of infrastructure is being constructed. The reasons for visiting the Moon and potentially, other planets and bodies in our solar system, are numerous: they could be the greatest scientific endeavors of our existence, allowing us to further understand the creation of our planet and solar system and the greater world around us. More importantly though, such missions contribute to the character of the nation, demonstrating the importance of science and technology to our civilization, which will ultimately help us process and address the issues of greatest concern: the health of our planet. Hopefully, Cernan’s words and hope that our absence from the Moon will be short-lived, and that we will once again explore new worlds in our lifetimes.

By 2050, Purchasing A New Gas-Guzzling Car Could Be Banned In Several States And Countries

The car market in several areas could look a whole lot different in a few decades, as Car and Driver reports that a handful of states and countries want to ban the sale of new gas- and diesel-powered cars by 2050. That means we’ll need a few more outlets, because apparently, battles over charging stations are a real thing.

Governmental bodies from eight U.S. states and five countries—all members of the zero-emissions vehicle alliance—joined the bandwagon favoring sales of solely electric cars just a few years down the road, as announced at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change. Areas include California, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon and Vermont on the U.S. side and the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, Norway, and Quebec from a global standpoint.

In just under 35 years, those governments claim that they will only allow zero-emissions vehicles to be sold within their borders. The move would certainly cut global emissions, but with how (not so) far along the electric-car market is at the moment, economic impacts could be huge if significant progress isn’t made.

According to Car and Driver, sales of electric cars are only at 1 million worldwide and 400,000 in the U.S.—meaning that President Barack Obama’s prediction of 1 million sold in the U.S. by 2015 from four years ago, well, it only amounted to the global total. Ouch.

The totals are rising fairly dramatically—at least, as dramatically as electric-car sales can rise at the moment—as of the past few years. At the beginning of 2015, the U.S. numbers hovered around 280,000 sold after growing by 120,000 the year before.

But that’s still nowhere near 1 million. And if the sales are that far off track, it’ll be interesting to see how well this new timeline holds up—if it even happens.

As far as if the ban on sales of gas- and diesel-powered cars can actually occur, Car and Driver reports that it remains unclear whether the zero-emissions alliance has the legal power to implement such a standard.

The future continues to get weirder, and the goals continue to get more ambitious.

Ted Cruz Blows Past Donald Trump in Latest Iowa Polls

Apparently, all it takes for Donald Trump to perform poorly in polls is the mere suggestion that an entire religion should be banned from the country he hopes to run.

A a Bloomberg Politics/Des Moines Register Iowa Poll released Saturday night shows that Sen. Ted Cruz is beating Trump by a total of 10 percent, seven weeks before the caucuses. From Bloomberg:

The firebrand junior senator from Texas is backed by 31 percent of those likely to attend the Republican caucuses that start the presidential nomination season on Feb. 1. Trump is a distant second at 21 percent, up slightly from 19 percent in October, but below his peak of 23 percent in August.

Among Iowa polls, Cruz’s 21-percentage-point spike since October is the largest surge over that past five presidential campaigns. Ben Carson, once thought to be a Trump challenger, fell by 15 percentage points, and is now trailing in third place.

Trump has already tweeted telling his followers “don’t trust the Des Moines Register poll” because it’s “biased toward Trump!” Yes, that’s probably it—the poll must be biased. It couldn’t be this, it just couldn’t be:
