Celery: Nothing Tastes as Good as Death Feels

Celery: Nothing Tastes as Good as Death Feels

Conventional wisdom holds if you want to be skinny, eat a bunch of celery. Here’s why: It’s not because chewing it requires more calories than a single stalk contains—a fact I learned in middle school but have not, in fact, ever verified.

It’s because shitting your brains out with an E. coli infection is a super easy way to drop weight real quick—plus you get time off from work.

Strangely, Starbucks doesn’t agree, at all, and they’ve pulled a festive-sounding Holiday Turkey Panini after a brand of celery they used in the sandwich apparently sickened at least 19 people in seven different states. (It’s not clear anyone got sick from Starbucks—according to BuzzFeed the Taylor Farms celery was “also used in products sold in 7-Eleven, Target, Walmart, Sam’s Club, Safeway, Albertsons, King Soopers, Pantry, Raley’s, and Savemart.”)

Either way, the newly svelte victims are all expected to make a full recovery—except for the ones with kidney failure—just in time for those New Years photos (that they’ll be looking at on their phone, from home, because they’re too weak to make it out this year.) What a waste but man, what a waist.

The Company That's a Bigger Threat to Wall Street Than Occupy

The Company That's a Bigger Threat to Wall Street Than Occupy

The people having the most success destroying the Wall Street elite these days are not bomb-throwing anarchists. They are buttoned-up investment types who are just less greedy.

Traditionally, the Wall Street investment industry has grown rich by skimming off a portion of the astronomical amount of money that passes through its hands. In exchange for moving money here and there and everywhere for investors, Wall Street would take a little fee. And even a fee that sounds subjectively small—one percent? Less?—adds up to many billions of dollars when it’s applied to a pool of investments in the trillions.

Over the years, though, research made it increasingly clear that the people you paid to tell you where to invest your money really had no idea if their advice was good or not. No idea! The advice was actually, in fact, worthless! And so people who paid high fees on their investments inevitably, over time, make less money than people who pay low fees. It also became clear that very few people can successfully pick winning stocks, so it is better for most people to just invest in everything and leave their money alone. These were the founding ideas of Vanguard, an investment group which provides very low-cost index funds, and is owned by its investors, meaning it lacks the insatiable profit motive of the big banks.

Today, Vanguard has grown so huge that with every passing year it sucks more and more away from higher-priced traditional Wall Street funds, as more and more people sit down and do the math on how much they are paying for a service that amounts to nothing. Bloomberg tallies up what Vanguard is actually costing the rest of Wall Street:

Vanguard’s assets now stand at $3.1 trillion, which effectively means that this year alone it will have removed more than $16 billion from the financial industry just through fees. That figure is based on the average asset-weighted fee of a Vanguard fund of 0.13 percent, compared with the 0.66 percent average asset-weighted fee of an active mutual fund...

Until now, the asset numbers probably weren’t big enough to trouble Wall Street, but as Vanguard is now on pace to add a cool $1 trillion in assets every few years, it is effectively becoming a massive wealth transfer machine funneling money out of the financial industry and into individual investors’ accounts.

To add a bit of perspective, Goldman Sachs’ investment management business brought in $6 billion in profits last year; JPMorgan Chase earned a total net income last year of close to $22 billion. Vanguard, simply by offering less greedy prices for its services, is in effect accomplishing the same thing that a tax on Wall Street that was then refunded to investors as a tax credit would accomplish.

It is kind of neat that the biggest existential threat to a fundamentally corrupt business model is just another business that decided to rip people off less. Who would have thought?

Waving signs outside of Goldman Sachs headquarters while playing a drum with a black bandanna tied around your face is still good. We all have a part to play. Just remember, Occupy Wall Street soldiers, that your most effective ally is a bunch of paper pushers in Malvern, PA.

Donald Trump's Long History of Mocking Other People's Appearances

$

Some people say it’s whats on the inside that counts. Other people say it’s not being a gross fat loser that counts. Guess which one Donald Trump is.

Whether it’s his own daughter (“she’s got the best body”), people he’s seen on TV (“Bette Middler is an extremely unattractive woman”), or just people he doesn’t like (“[Arianna Huffington is] unattractive both inside and out”), the blithely self-unaware candidate is very, very aware of other people’s appearances.

http://gawker.com/the-collected-...

In fact, he’s been this way for years. Despite the “ancient technology” in use at the time, there exists almost 30-years’ worth of footage of Trump making hyperbolized, skin-deep declarations about people’s physical attributes. The majority of them are not exactly flattering. Still, there is one person whose looks Trump finds beyond reproach: His own.

There Have Been More Mass Shootings in 2015 Than Days in the Year

Less than a week after the Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood shooting—a day during which the FBI processed two firearm background checks per second, and on which four people were shot at a restaurant in Sacramento—news of another mass shooting is rolling in. This time it’s in San Bernardino. If it seems like this happens every day in America, you’d be wrong: it happens more often than that.

This year, the Washington Post has been updating Wonkblog regularly with the numbers on mass shootings, as compiled by a Reddit community that counts a mass shooting as “any event in which four or more people, including the gunman, are killed or injured by gunfire.” This year, there have been more shootings than days. Today, December 2, is the 336th day of the year; with this shooting, we are (at least) at 352 shootings.

The total number of shootings has already surpassed 2014’s number and will soon surpass 2013’s, a cycle which shows no signal of stopping, as America tends to respond to gun violence by buying more guns. Via the AP:

The previous record for the most background checks in a single day was Dec. 21, 2012, about a week after 20 children and six adults were shot to death in a Connecticut elementary school. The week following the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary saw the processing of 953,613 gun background checks.

There are no solutions in sight, except any number of obvious solutions that have been immediately obstructed by GOP lawmakers, like expanded background checks or bans on assault weapons that no civilian should ever desire to own. Our nation now exists in a state of constant mourning; the Republican response to these shootings has rendered the idea that “All Lives Matter”—let alone black lives—an excruciating farce.

At this point, we may be down to this.

All the Presidential Candidates' Responses to the San Bernardino Mass Shooting

After bearing some heavy criticism for being slow to respond to last week’s mass shooting, the still all-too-many presidential candidates have been quick to offer up their thoughts and, as always, their prayers in the wake of today’s shooting in San Bernardino.

http://gawker.com/as-many-as-20-...

Donald Trump went the “support our men in blue route”...

... riiiight after tweeting this.

And then, of course, there was a presidential prayer circle.

The Democrats are the only candidates who have actually connected today’s shooting to gun policy in any capacity whatsoever.

Martin O’Malley, however, was the only one not craven enough to call out the NRA itself.

We still have yet to hear from the rest of the candidates, but we will update this post when and if that changes

Republican Party Prepares to Patronize Trump Voters With Improved Propaganda

The Republican establishment’s progression through the stages of grief over Donald Trump’s enduring popularity is getting perilously close to “acceptance.” Fortunately, the party has some fresh new ideas about how it will proceed in the now-thinkable case of a Trump nomination.

http://gawker.com/donald-trump-b...

The Washington Post today got ahold of a memo written by Ward Baker, the head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, which has been circulating among influential Republicans for a couple of months now. The topic of the memo is, in essence, what all the other Republicans in America should do if Donald Trump—a crazy man—becomes the party’s presidential nominee.

The advice in the memo could be summed up as “Be more like Donald Trump,” (“To get on the reformist wave, advance clear-cut reforms that change the way Washington works”) as well as “Don’t be too much like Donald Trump” (“Trump Is a Misguided Missile”). But one thing is for sure: the Republican establishment hears you, the gullible Trump voters, loud and clear. They are ready and willing to enact several totally superficial forms of propaganda in order to appeal to your sense of dissolute anger:

Change the Look. It’s time to change the way you and your campaign are presented. Lose the suit and visit people in their homes and places of work. Hold sessions where you listen to people and capture audio and video of them discussing their real world problems. People talk about problems, not issues. So, focus on the problems and offer your solutions. Avoid Washingtonspeak (legislation, bills, insider talk) in favor of Main Street common sense. And, tell your communications and media teams to up the vibe and change the look. Voters are on to you when you do the standard walk and talk through a business, school, or factory. Try a new look and have business owners, constituents, family members, and workers talk about you. Have them talk about a problem you solved, a solution you came up with, or the life-changing moment you delivered on. Feature them in your issue phase whileyou assume the role of a citizen-servant. This also protectsyou from opposition attacks since real world people aretalking about real world things you did for them. How can someone challenge that? [...]

Special Note: Consider visuals that communicate change and reform. Feature candidates working on an old engine and note how sometimes you have to do a complete overhaul to get things working. Consider featuring a candidate in a field ripping up a rotten tree stump so the field can be cleared and planting can be done. Have a constituent or citizen talking about the candidate cleaning up the mess in Washington as the candidate participates in a street cleaning & beautification campaign.

Working on an old engine—take that, Washington.

The Republican Party has heard your cry, America: it will change both look and visuals to pander to you more effectively.

Rahm Emanuel Reportedly Threatened Chicago's Black Leaders Over Protests

Rahm Emanuel Reportedly Threatened Chicago's Black Leaders Over Protests

Rahm Emanuel has said the right things in public about the Laquan McDonald travesty, even if behind closed doors he’s been a force for something less than total justice. The reported details of a series of meetings Emanuel had with a number of black civic leaders from Chicago’s South Side prior to the release of the dashcam footage won’t do much to shore up his image among Chicagoans.

http://gawker.com/rahm-emanuel-f...

According to a story in a local newsletter called Aldertrack, as flagged by Ratter, Emanuel held a series of meetings at City Hall with, as reporter Mike Fourcher puts it, “youth leaders, Black clergy and members of the City Council Black Caucus.” The ostensible point of the meetings was to assuage fears among Chicago’s black residents about how the city had handled the case, but for Emanuel they seemed to have one other purpose: to warn the leaders who represent those residents that there would be repercussions if protests got out of control.

Forucher reports that several people attending the meeting of clergy personnel threatened to withhold money for jobs programs in the city’s primarily black South Side if the McDonald protests became violent. Via Aldertrack:

The Mayor then asked the group to stress peaceful protest through the Thanksgiving weekend and to avoid violence.

“He encouraged us to encourage the community to exercise their first amendment rights, but to do so peacefully,” said Rev. Barrett. “The point of the meeting was how to encourage that peaceful protest.”

According to attendees, the Mayor then told the group that if there was violence over the weekend, he would not be able to find resources to bring jobs into their community.

“He said, if things go bad then don’t come looking to me for jobs,” said Rev. Brooks.

“There was something about how if you don’t encourage peace, don’t look to me for resources,” said Young Leaders Alliance head Jedidiah Brown, who was also present.

Per Fourcher, when clergy members expressed offense at Emanuel’s insinuation, he attempted to calm them down by further clarifying what he says he meant:

The Mayor then backtracked, according to Brooks and others. “He said that what he meant was that resources he’d use to get jobs [would have to be] use[d] to clean up the city of Chicago,” following violent protests.

Chicago is a major city. It has plenty of cash—it pays obscene amounts of money in overtime pay every year, for instance. If Emanuel needed to “clean up” the city because of riots over one of its police officers killing a teenager, he wouldn’t need to divert money currently marked for jobs for those most in need of them.

That is, unless he just wanted to be a vindictive asshole, and if Rahm Emanuel is anything, it’s a vindictive asshole. Being a vindictive asshole has gotten him very far in politics. Though if he isn’t careful, it may soon be his downfall.

FBI: San Bernardino Shooting Suspects Are Probably Americans, Not "Terrorists"

$
0
0

David Bowdich, the Assistant Director of the FBI, spoke at a press conference addressing the ongoing situation in San Bernardino earlier today. And he is apparently very, very confused about their own definition of the word “terrorism.”

From Bowdich’s statement:

I know one of your questions will be, “Is this a terrorist incident?” I will tell you right now, we do not know if this is a terrorist incident. We start from the beginning, working with our local partners. We take the presumption that it may be or it may not be

In this case, “we do not know if this is a terrorist incident,” actually means, “we do not know if this is related to Islam from overseas.” Because by almost any definition of the word, the slaughtering of 14 innocent people is, of course, terrorism.

Then again the current suspects are supposedly white. In which case this is just another isolated incident of a loner gone wrong—isolated like the hundreds that came before it.

Quiz: Is This a Fundraising Email or An Email From Our Exes?

We’re deep in the sweaty recesses of campaign season, which means our inboxes are constantly crammed with desperate pleas from disappointing people. Coincidentally, the same thing tends to happen right about now with our former flames, who tend to use this meditative time of year to reflect on how shitty they are.

The result is a bit of email confusion: at a quick glance, it’s surprisingly difficult to tell whether that pleading missive is from the Democratic National Committee or someone who’s been repeatedly instructed to lose your number.

To demonstrate, we’ve been collecting both fundraising emails, and, at risk of subjecting the entire office to a bit of light PTSD, very real emails from Gawker Media’s exes. And now you get to guess which is which!

1.

Quiz: Is This a Fundraising Email or An Email From Our Exes?

Tricky one! Is it “important” that we donate $5 today, or important that we understand that was not what that looked like, she’s just a work friend? Find out below.

It’s the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, pretending to be your commander in chief!

Quiz: Is This a Fundraising Email or An Email From Our Exes?

2.

Quiz: Is This a Fundraising Email or An Email From Our Exes?

Put a record donation on the books? Put a conciliatory drinks evening in your appointment book? Or perhaps book a time to fuck off instead?

Oh, yep, it’s someone’s ex.

3.

Quiz: Is This a Fundraising Email or An Email From Our Exes?

Who needs you that much? You can probably guess.

That there is Congressman Dr. Raul Ruiz. He’s currently running for reelection in California, and his fundraising emails were (fun fact!) so relentlessly thirsty they generated this entire post idea. He needs you, and us all.

4.

Quiz: Is This a Fundraising Email or An Email From Our Exes?

An email marked urgent from someone expressing all-caps concern? It can only be...

That’s Annette Taddeo, a candidate for Congress in Florida, pictured here when she was a candidate for lieutenant governor in 2014. We can’t recall just what she’s concerned about but it does seem pressing.

5.

Quiz: Is This a Fundraising Email or An Email From Our Exes?

Do you?

Nope, you don’t, because that is someone’s ex, phrasing things in maybe the least romantic way possible.

6.

Quiz: Is This a Fundraising Email or An Email From Our Exes?

Let me guess:

That one had ex all over it.

7.

Quiz: Is This a Fundraising Email or An Email From Our Exes?

Oh, hmm—look towards the spring campaign season? Look towards spring when I will recapture your heart?

Oh yeah. That was an ex.

8.

Quiz: Is This a Fundraising Email or An Email From Our Exes?

Uh oh. Could it be....

As we suspected, that is Senator and person who wants to be president Ted Cruz, letting us know it “must be wrong” that we’re listed as not having donated to his campaign yet. (If donating to you is wrong, Ted... we don’t want to be wrong.)

9.

Quiz: Is This a Fundraising Email or An Email From Our Exes?

I hate the sound of this one.

As expected, that is Congressman Dr. Raul Ruiz again, who could possibly chill just a touch.

10.

And for our gut-wrenching finale:

Quiz: Is This a Fundraising Email or An Email From Our Exes?

Oh God.

Wow, I really, really wanted that one not to be an ex.

That was upsetting! Before we go, we’ll leave you with a final thought, from a Gawker Media staffer who graciously plumbed his or her inbox on our behalf: “I need a Klonopin.”

At Least 12 Dead in San Bernardino Mass Shooting [UPDATING]

The San Bernardino county sheriff has confirmed the presence of an active shooter near the 1300 block of S. Waterman in San Bernardino, CA. At least 12 people are dead, with another 20 reportedly injured.

The city’s Fire Department says on Twitter that they’ve received reports indicating as many as 20 people were shot. A SWAT team appears to be on the scene and emergency crews are reportedly setting up a triage center near the city’s convention center and other patients appear to be receiving treatment on a local golf course.

At least 12 people are confirmed dead and Los Angeles’ FOX 11 reports cops are currently searching for “3 white males dressed in military gear.”

Witnesses say the men had masks on and may have been wearing body armor, ABC reports. They were armed with rifles and “came into the office and started shooting,” sometime around 2 p.m. Eastern Time.

The shooting apparently began at the Inland Regional Center, a nonprofit organization that works with people with developmental disabilities. There are reportedly 21 independently operated Regional Centers scattered throughout the state serving the developmentally disabled—many of them underage—and their families.

An employee at a different center says the San Bernardino office featured an “open design like the DMV.”

One man, Terry Petit, tells NBC he received a text from his daughter—who has since been confirmed safe—asking him to pray for her.

“People shot. In the office waiting for cops. Pray for us. I am locked in an office,” the text reportedly read.

It is still an active scene and San Bernardino police have reportedly asked news outlets not to show the building (pictured below) until the investigation has concluded.

The FBI, ATF, Fire Department and Sheriff’s department are all on the scene. Witnesses say firefighters are using pickup trucks to evacuate victims. An NBC cameraman on the scene reports seeing at least six injured victims loaded in the back of one truck because “there wasn’t enough time” to wait for ambulances.

Update 3:15 p.m.

President Obama has been briefed on the shooting, NBC reports.

Update 3:22 p.m.

Police may be closing in on one of the shooters, according to a Los Angeles Times reporter.

Police appear to be asking news outlets to stop filming over the scene, citing its “active” nature and the FAA has issued a temporary flight restriction over the area.

According to a report from the LA Times, federal officials are searching for a black SUV that “fled the scene” of the shooting.

Update 4:02 p.m.

One Los Angeles Times reporter provides more details on the shooting.

Update 4:14 p.m.

San Bernardino police confirm the Regional Center was hosting some sort of event today when “multiple shooters came in and just started shooting.” They were reportedly dressed in “military style” attire.

Update 4:25 p.m.

NBC is reporting a developing SWAT situation nearby in Pasadena that’s believed to be related to the shooting. [UPDATE 4:30 p.m.—NBC now says the Pasadena situation is not related to San Bernardino.]

Update 4:30 p.m.

According to ABC, the gunman or gunmen opened fire on some sort of county banquet that was being held in a rented conference room in the building.

Update 5:00 p.m.

In a press conference, San Bernardino authorities are now saying at least 14 people are dead and an additional 14 injured. The gunmen, who were armed with “long guns not handguns” reportedly fled the scene in a black SUV and are still at large.

“[The shooters] came prepared to do what they did, as if they were on a mission,” San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said.

Update 5:40 p.m.

President Obama was apparently already sitting down for an interview with CBS when he was briefed on the shooting. He provided the network with this brief statement:

The one thing we do know is that we have a pattern now of mass shootings in this country that has no parallel anywhere else in the world, and there’s some steps we could take, not to eliminate every one of these mass shootings, but to improve the odds that they don’t happen as frequently, common-sense gun safety laws, stronger background checks and, you know, for those who are concerned about terrorism of, you know, some may be aware of the fact that we have a no-fly list where people can’t get on planes but those same people who we don’t allow to fly could go into a store right now in the United States and buy a firearm and there’s nothing that we can do to stop them.

Update 6:15 p.m.

According to reports, San Bernardino cops are currently chasing a suspect who has reportedly “fired shots out the back window.” Per NBC, at least one suspect was hit by gunfire.

Update 6:45 p.m.

According to the LA Times, the shooting may have been a workplace dispute: It apparently when after a man “angrily” left a meeting that was being held inside a rented conference room at the Inland Regional Center and returned, armed, with two other people.

A relative of a witness tells the LA Times, “Everyone dropped to the floor. It was during a holiday party,” 27-year-old Denise Peraza told relatives. “The guys opened fired for 30 seconds, randomly, then paused to reload and began firing again.”

Update 6:55 p.m.

WJZ Baltimore reports all three suspects have been reported “caught or down” but NBC Los Angeles says a third suspect seen “running through the neighborhood” with a weapon is still at large and may be hiding out in an apartment building.

Update 7:08 p.m.

San Bernardino Police Sgt. Vicki Cervantes said during a press conference that one suspect is dead, one suspect is in custody, and one suspect may still be on the loose. An officer was also reportedly injured during the shootout.

The New York Times cites a police scanner report in its coverage, noting that “police on the local scanner said that a man with an orange shirt fled into business complex, with officers in pursuit. They were trying to secure the top floors of parking garages on either side, so no one would be exposed when they tried to rush up stairs toward the suspect.”

Update 7:31 p.m.

On Twitter, citing federal law enforcement sources, the LA Times’ Rick Serrano expands on an earlier theory—that a man “angrily” left a meeting at the Inland Regional Center, before returning with two others, all armed—suggesting that one of the gunmen went to the meeting earlier in the day in order to make sure that a specific target was present.

Update 7:40 p.m.

Someone close to the shootout uploaded a video to Snapchat in which the sound of gunfire can be heard. The video was shared to the Los Angeles-area Snapchat “story” and can be seen here.

Update 8:00 p.m.

According to the New York Times, investigators believe one of the three gunmen worked at the Inland Regional Center:

A witness has told police that although the gunmen had their faces covered, one of them sounded and appeared very similar to an employee who had left the facility earlier in the day.

“They had their appearances covered but a witness believed it had been someone who worked there,” said one official.

KTLA is reporting that police, accompanied by tactical officers and at least two Bearcats, are serving a search warrant in Redlands.

Texas Sues Federal Government to Stop Syrian Refugees From Being Resettled in Dallas

The state of Texas is suing the United States government, the Associated Press reports, in an effort to stop 6 Syrian refugees from being resettled in Dallas this week. Governor Greg Abbott has consistently sought to impede the arrival of refugees in his state since the terror attacks in Paris last month.

http://gawker.com/texas-gov-orde...

The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Dallas on Wednesday by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on behalf of the state’s Health and Human Services Commission. According to the Dallas Morning News, it names the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Health and Human Services Department, as well as the International Rescue Committee, a New York-based aid agency.

The IRC, a federal resettlement contractor, confirmed earlier on Wednesday two Syrian refugee families were scheduled to arrive in Dallas on Friday. The lawsuit, citing “reasonable concerns about the safety and security of the citizenry of the State of Texas,” seeks to block their arrival.

From the News:

Citing potential for “irreparable harm,” the state reiterated in the law suit many of the security concerns that it has previously outlined. And it said that the IRC refused to comply with federal law to “consult with the State in advance on placement of refugees in Texas.”

“Whatever ‘advance consultation’ and ‘close cooperation’ mean, this is not it,” said the lawsuit, which names the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Health and Human Services Department.

“We have been working diligently with the International Rescue Committee to find a solution that ensures the safety and security for all Texans, but we have reached an impasse and will now let the courts decide,” Bryan Black, a spokesman for HHSC, said.

Rahm Emanuel Can't Handle the Tough Questions About His Family Vacation

Who would have thought a softball question from Mike Allen could end so disastrously?

Allen, the chief political reporter at The Politico, was hosting a panel discussion this morning when he lobbed the innocuous query at the Chicago governor, who arguably should have been expecting something a lot worse.

http://gawker.com/rahm-emanuel-r...

“You take your young people on fascinating trips around the world, headed these holidays to Cuba, why?” Allen asked, unwittingly tripping Emanuel’s fuse.

“Well, first of all, thanks for telling everyone what I’m going to do with my family. You just had a private conversation with me and now you decided to make that public. I really don’t appreciate that. I’m expressing to you, now, publicly my displeasure. My family’s trips are my family” Emanuel said, before elaborating on his answer with a dump of information about his family’s private trips.

Then Emanuel asked Allen for his cell number, “because I’d like you to listen to Amy and it’s not going to work.”

Allen, regrettably, did not follow up with the obvious question: Who cares?
