Man Pleads Insanity to Killing Wife After Eating Weed Candy

Man Pleads Insanity to Killing Wife After Eating Weed Candy

A Denver man who was accused of murdering his wife after eating weed candy has now changed his plea to not guilty by reason of insanity. The tragic incident occurred in April 2014 when Kristine Kirk was on a 911 call, telling dispatchers that her husband, Richard Kirk, had been acting erratically after eating an edible called “Karma Kandy Orange Ginger.” His original plea was not guilty.

Before she was shot, Kristine told 911 her husband started acting paranoid, climbed through a window and cut his legs on broken glass, AP reports. She was begging him not to retrieve a gun from a locked safe. Dispatchers then heard a gunshot and the call went quiet. The couple’s three children were also present at the time of the killing.

While Kirk is now pleading not guilty by reason of insanity, voluntary drug and alcohol use cannot be the basis of his defense. From AP:

Experts will have to consider Kirk’s behavior in the days, weeks and months leading up to and following the shooting, said Steven Pitt, a forensic psychiatrist who has worked on sanity cases but isn’t involved with Kirk’s case. His mental health history likely will also come into play.

The couple had also been experiencing marital and financial problems. Kristine had a life insurance policy worth $340,000 at the time of her death.

Following this case and the death of a college student who jumped off of a hotel balcony after eating a pot cookie, Colorado edibles now have tighter regulations—including stricter potency limits and new packaging.

North Carolina Teen Prosecuted for Having Naked Images of Himself on His Phone

A teenaged couple in North Carolina have been prosecuted for having nude photos of themselves and each other on their cell phones, the Guardian reports. The boy took a plea deal to avoid jail time and being registered as a sex offender.

Cormega Copening of Fayetteville, North Carolina was 16 when the photos were discovered amidst a broader investigation into sexual images being shared without the subjects’ consent at his high school. Copening was not involved in that case, but was prosecuted anyway as an adult, under federal child pornography laws, for sexually exploiting a minor—himself. He is now 17.

Copening was charged with five sexual exploitation of a minor charges, the Fayetteville Observer reported: four for making and possessing two sexually explicit images of himself and the fifth for possessing a naked image of his girlfriend, Brianna Denson, 16. Copening was also suspended as quarterback of the Jack Britt High School football team while the case was ongoing.

According to the Observer, sex between Copening and Denson—who was charged two felony sex crimes against herself and took a plea deal in July—would not have been illegal, as the age of consent in North Carolina is 16. For teens less than four years apart in age, the age of consent is even lower.

“It’s dysfunctional to be charged with possession of your own image,” University of Wisconsin professor of criminal justice and co-founder of cyberbullying.org Justin Patchin told the Guardian.

Earlier this month, Copening also copped a plea, WRAL reported, admitting to two counts of disseminating harmful material to minors. Copening and Denson received the same deal: a year’s probation, during which time they are banned from carrying cell phones.

Helen Mirren Regrets Not Telling More People to 'Fuck Off'

Role model Helen Mirren wishes that she could tell people to “fuck off” more often than she does. Mirren was at Badgley Mischka’s Fashion Week show when she shared her thoughts on her favorite phrase:

“Unfortunately, at least for my generation, growing up (we didn’t say that) and I love the fact that girls are so much more confident and outspoken than my generation were. We were sort of brought up to be polite and sometimes politeness, in certain circumstances, is not what’s required, you’ve got to have the courage to stand up for yourself occasionally when it’s needed.”

Suspected Phoenix Freeway Shooter Maintains His Innocence

In a brief court appearance on Saturday, Leslie Allen Merritt Jr., a 21-year-old landscaper charged in connection with a series of 11 shootings that took place along a freeway in Arizona earlier this month, maintained his innocence: “All I have to say is I’m the wrong guy,” he said.

Charged with aggravated assault, criminal damage, disorderly conduct, carrying out a drive-by shooting and intentional acts of terrorism, the Associated Press reports that Superior Court Commissioner Lisa Roberts set bail at $1 million. “The suspect presents a dramatic and profound threat to the community,” said Maricopa County attorney’s Ed Leiter.

After bail was set, Merritt asked to address the court. “All I have to say is I’m the wrong guy. I tried telling the detectives that,” he said. “My gun’s been in the pawn shop the last two months. I haven’t even had access to a weapon.”

But, according to the AP, charging documents released late on Saturday by the Maricopa Superior Court reveal that investigators determined Merritt had not in fact pawned his gun at the time of the shootings.

Over the course of three weeks, 11 vehicles driving along a Phoenix freeway were struck by bullets or other pellets, such as BBs or pellets. The only person who was hurt was a 13-year-old girl whose ear was cut by shattered glass. Merritt was charged in connection with the first four of the shootings; the investigation into the remainder is ongoing.

500 Days of Kristin, Day 238: Jalapeños, Two Ways

As promised, Kristin Cavallari has published another tailgating snack recipe on the Official Kristin Cavallari App for iPhone and Android in honor of football season. (The first recipe she posted was for “cheeseless queso.”) Today’s snack? “Stuffed jalapeños.”

Unfortunately for those interested in reading a stuffed jalapeños recipe written by Kristin Cavallari, the post containing said recipe is marked as “exclusive content” on the app.

Kristin’s exclusive content costs $2.99—per month.

Here’s something that happens to be free: A YouTube video posted by The Frisky last year, wherein Kristin details her recipe for “Jalapeño poppers.”

“Stuffed jalapeños” and “jalapeño poppers”: two different things, per Kristin. Photo evidence suggests otherwise.

Here is a screenshot of Kristin’s stuffed jalapeños, presented exclusively on her app:

500 Days of Kristin, Day 238: Jalapeños, Two Ways

And here is a screenshot of Kristin’s jalapeño poppers, from YouTube:

500 Days of Kristin, Day 238: Jalapeños, Two Ways

Is Kristin attempting to charge her followers for a recipe that she already put online for free?

I can’t say for sure, because I didn’t read the stuffed jalapeños recipe, because it costs $2.99.

Ben Carson Thinks No Muslim Should Ever Serve As President

In an interview Sunday with NBC, Republican presidential candidate and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson said he does not think a Muslim person should ever serve as president: “I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that.”

Asked whether he believes if Islam is consistent with the Constitution, Carson said, “No... I don’t, I do not.”

Hmm, well:

The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.

A spokesman for the United States’ largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, criticized Carson’s comments. “To me this really means he is not qualified to be president of the United States,” Ibrahim Hooper told the Associated Press. “You cannot hold these kinds of views and at the same time say you will represent all Americans, of all faiths and backgrounds.”

Carson did say he would be more open to voting for a Muslim Congressional candidate. “Congress is a different story, but it depends on who that Muslim is and what their policies are,” he said, “just as it depends on what anybody else says, you know.” Haha, right.

Novelist Jackie Collins Is Dead at 77

Novelist Jackie Collins Is Dead at 77

Last night, British writer Jackie Collins died in her home in Los Angeles. Collins was 77. Her family said the cause was breast cancer which she was diagnosed with in 2007.

Collins was a prolific writer, producing more than 30 books throughout her career. The New York Times describes her novels as “filled with explicit, unrestrained sexuality.” She published her first book, The World Is Full of Married Men, in 1968, at a time when the romance genre was relatively prim, focusing on romantic love, yet demurring from frank depictions of sex. Collins’ style was anything but, it was considered so graphic that Australia and South Africa banned the sale of that book.

But readers eagerly responded to Collins’ novels, making her one of the best-selling novelist of the 20th century. She sold more than 500 million copies of her books. Many were also adapted for film and television.

Yesterday Joan Collins, Jackie’s sister, told People that she is completely devastated by her sister’s death. “She was my best friend,” Joan said. “I admire how she handled this. She was a wonderful, brave and a beautiful person and I love her.”

Fellow writers paid tribute to Jackie Collins on social media, and many remarked on her unusual style of writing. Collins wrote her books in longhand and kept all of the original drafts.

Collins’ last novel was published in June. She is survived by her three daughters and her sister.

Gymnastics Coach Accused of Child Molestation Found Dead in Jail

The head of an Indianapolis gymnastics academy arrested last month on charges of child pornography and molestation was found dead in his cell of apparent suicide, the Associated Press reports.

http://gawker.com/olympic-gymnas...

A spokeswoman for the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Katie Carlson, said Marvin Sharp, 49, died on Saturday night. Foul play isn’t suspected.

Sharp, who, according to the AP, coached two members of the 2008 U.S. women’s Olympic team and was named the USA Gymnastics Coach of the Year in 2010, faced four counts of child molestation, three counts of sexual misconduct with a minor, and federal charges of having knowingly received and possessed child pornography.

The investigation into Sharp began with complaints over photo shoots he conducted with children, the Indianapolis Star reports. He was arrested after accusations that he had fondled one of his 14-year-old gymnastics were revealed.

Even as it celebrated the 17th annual National Gymnastics Day, USA Gymnastics released a statement in response to Sharp’s apparent suicide: “USA Gymnastics is aware of the untimely death of Marvin Sharp. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of all involved in this tragic set of circumstances.”

Awful Tourists Turned Away Nesting Sea Turtles in Costa Rica

Awful Tourists Turned Away Nesting Sea Turtles in Costa Rica

Hundreds of thousands of olive ridley sea turtles came ashore on Ostional Beach to lay their eggs, but thousands of tourists were already there, doing nearly everything you’re not supposed to do around a threatened species attempting to reproduce.

Photos show the tourists crowding the shoreline so the turtles would have to crawl through the crowds to to dig their nests, or even splashing out into the water to pose for pictures with the turtles. Some of the beachgoers actually put their children on the turtles’ backs, according to the New York Times. Unsurprisingly, the throngs of big, noisy mammals scared the turtles away from their nesting ground. Most of them turned right around and swam back out to sea.

The good news is that at least some of them returned under cover of darkness to finish their business. Conservations found more eggs than they expected, and they think the turtles probably laid those eggs at night, after the tourists had gone home.

Sea turtles usually have an easier time nesting on Costa Rica’s Pacific beaches, because the landscape itself helps guarantee their privacy. Their August-through-October nesting season lines up with Costa Rica’s rainy season, and the flooded Nosara River usually blocks all access to the beach. This year, however, El Niño caused lower rainfall than usual, which made it too easy for tourists to swarm the beach.

Another wave of nesting turtles is expected in October, and the Costa Rican government is planning to double security and restrict access to nesting beaches.

Unauthorized Biography: British PM David Cameron Put "Private Part" in Dead Pig's Mouth

Citing an unnamed member of parliament, a forthcoming biography of David Cameron claims Britain’s Conservative Prime Minister “put a private part of his anatomy” in a dead pig’s mouth during an initiation ritual as a student at Oxford, the Daily Mail reports.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3...

The Mail began to serialize the book—titled Call Me Dave and penned by former political ally Lord Ashcroft with journalist Isabel Oakeshott—Sunday night, attributing the allegation to a “distinguished Oxford contemporary” who said Cameron performed the act as an inductee into the school’s notorious Piers Gaveston Society:

The source — himself an MP — first made the allegation out of the blue at a business dinner in June 2014. Lowering his voice, he claimed to have seen photographic evidence of this disgusting ritual.

Some months later, he repeated it a third time, providing a little more detail. The pig’s head, he claimed, had been resting on the lap of a Piers Gaveston society member while Cameron performed the act.

The MP also gave us the dimensions of the alleged photograph, and provided the name of the individual who he claims has it in his keeping.

According to the book, attempts to reach out to the photograph’s owner failed.

“Perhaps it is a case of mistaken identity,” writes Ashcroft. “Yet it is an elaborate story for an otherwise credible figure to invent.”

Cops: Gunman Shoots Girlfriend, Infant, Pastor in Alabama Church

An Alabama man was arrested for three counts of attempted murder today after authorities say he opened fire in a church in Selma, Alabama, injuring his girlfriend, their newborn child and a clergyman that attempted to stop him, NBC News reports.

In a statement, police said the shooting began Sunday morning when 26-year-old James Junior Minter took a seat between his girlfriend and their baby during services at Oasis Tabernacle Church. From the AP:

Minter then pulled out a handgun and started shooting, the statement said. The girlfriend fell to the ground, and Minter fired at her, striking her in the jaw and shoulder. The baby, a 1-month-old boy, was shot in the hand.

The church’s pastor then grabbed Minter and was shot in the leg. Members of the congregation helped subdue Minter and managed to wrest away his gun, according to police. Minter then ran out of the church.

All three victims were then taken to nearby hospitals, where they are reportedly in stable condition.

Mitner was later captured by police less than a mile away from the scene of the shooting. According to the Selma Times-Journal, authorities say the shooting was motivated by domestic issues that may have involved visitation rights to the child.

Tracy Morgan Returns to Emmys: "I've Started To Feel Like Myself Again"

“Shout out to Tracy Morgan, we’ll see you next year, Tracy,” Jimmy Kimmel said at last year’s Emmy Awards, and would you look at that? He was right. Morgan was the “very special guest” at this year’s Emmys and his return to the awards show’s stage to present Best Drama was the highlight of the snoozy ceremony.

Kimmel’s words seemed like wishful thinking at the time given the bleak reports regarding Morgan’s condition after his June 2014 bus accident, but there Morgan was, mistily telling the standing crowd, “I miss you guys so much.”

“Thanks to my amazing doctors and the support of my family, and my beautiful new wife, I’m here standing on my own two feet,” he said to another round of cheering.

“It’s been a long road back,” he continued. “I suffered a traumatic brain injury that put me in a coma for eight days. When I finally regained consciousness, I was just ecstatic to learn that I wasn’t the one who messed up.”

“Only recently I’ve started to feel like myself again, which means a whole lotta y’all women gonna get pregnant at the after party,” he concluded. Tracy Morgan’s back, and he brought his sperm with him.

Cops: Man Raised $5,000 After Vandalizing Own Truck, Blaming Black Lives Matter Activists

A Texas man was arrested and charged with making a false police report on Friday after allegedly defacing his own car and blaming it on supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement, the NY Daily News reports.

Earlier this month, Scott Lattin of Whitney, Texas told KDFW that vandals had spray-painted “Black Lives Matter” and “[Fuck] Your Flag, Your Family, Your Feelings, Your Faith” on his truck after he wrote “Police Lives Matter” on the vehicle’s back window.

“They need support so they can feel what they do, putting their lives on the line every day,” Lattin told the station at the time. “It’s the only truck we have and because of this, it’s totaled now.”

After the report aired, the Lattins were able to raise $5,855 in donations through the website GoFundMe.com.

Authorities, however, quickly noticed discrepancies between the damage seen by police and that shown on television. From KDFW:

“We had initial video when the officers took the report and then when we saw your story on Channel 4. When we looked at those two videos, there were some differences in those and that led us to take the investigation into a different direction,” [Whitney Police Chief Chris ] Bentley said.

Bentley said when they took the report there was no damage to the inside of the truck. But when FOX4 showed up, Lattin showed that the glove box was ripped off and the seats slashed.

According to court documents, Lattin later admitted to vandalizing the vehicle for insurance reasons.

“One of the social media pages said ‘My husband is an officer, I can give you $25 because that’s all I can afford,’” Bentley told KDFW. “That just ripped at my heart.”

500 Days of Kristin, Day 239: Great Hosting Opportunities

In a recent, exclusive interview with PerezHilton.com, Kristin Cavallari discussed her stature (“very petite”), her career, and how she balances it all. It turns out that Kristin can’t say “yes” to every opportunity to host an event that comes her way.

She explained:

On the work/life balance: My family is my number one priority and because of that, I have to absolutely love whatever it is I’m doing work-wise. I’ve passed on some great hosting opportunities because they would have kept me in LA but those are the sacrifices I don’t mind making because they’re for my children. Now everything I do, I wholeheartedly believe in and love, otherwise I won’t do it.

Those are the sacrifices, indeed.

If you somehow haven’t played Settlers of Catan yet, all you need to know is that it’s basically the board game, perfected. And today, you can add the 5th edition to your game cabinet for just $36, the lowest price Amazon’s ever offered.

That’s not a huge discount off the game’s typical ~$40 selling price, but it really doesn’t ever go on sale, and it’s worth every penny. All it takes is one game to bring your family closer together, or spoil a lifelong friendship—nobody wants your damn sheep, Steve. Stop asking!—so be sure to grab a box before the price goes back up. Deez Nuts Are Getting Divorced After GoPro Captures a Testicle Attack

A Florida woman was arrested Thursday for alleged domestic battery after her husband’s waist-mounted GoPro camera caught her “intentionally striking him in the testicles.” According to an arrest report obtained by The Smoking Gun, the man had started wearing the camera “due to issues in the past with incidents like this.”

Michael Novak is in the midst of a long, contentious divorce with his wife, Corrine, and a custody battle over their twin two-year-old boys, according to Tampa Bay news station WTSP.

At a custody exchange Thursday morning, Michael was apparently unbuckling one of his kids from a car seat when Corrine snuck up behind him and punched (or possibly squeezed) his nuts (the police report reads “struck,” but WTSP tells a tale of forceful grabbing).

Watch the video Michael shared with the news station—which they examined “frame by frame,” of course—and judge for yourself. Either way, the evidence was enough to charge Corrine with domestic battery.

“Call the police. I’m going to tell them you just assaulted me,” she can be heard saying on a recording in the WTSP segment, although it’s not clear whether it’s the same one taken Thursday morning.

“This is just one of many instances where I’ve had to use the camera to either prove her guilt or prove my innocence and that’s the only reason I am carrying it,” Michael told the news station.
